6 Hours Later

"I'm going to head home Dr. Lowry." My resident spoke.

I nodded glumly my eyelids feeling very droopy.

"Have you seen any of my interns?" I asked the resident before they could leave me alone for the night.

"I think Mia is in the pit." He spoke.

"Thank you." I said as I watched him walk away officially leaving me alone for the night.

I slowly walked to the pit ditching my usual run up the stairs and taking the elevator.

I walked in with my eyelids slowly falling over my eyes pressing the lower level button that will bring me to the pit.

"Tired?" Someone asked.

I turned my body around to find Charlie standing with roses in his hands.

"Charlie." I signed a smirk tugging at the corners of my lips. "Oh my- what time is it?"

"8." He chuckled.

"Oh my god I'm so sorry!" I spoke. "I had a surgery and then-"

"It's fine." He chuckled. "To be honest I didn't expect much more."

I smiled sheepishly looking down.

"I'm still sorry."

"You don't have to be." He smiled, his deep voice was soothing in times of stress.

I found it especially soothing now.

"So you still can go out to dinner right?" He asked.

"Uhm yeah I just have to check something real quick." I spoke.

The elevator dinged falling upon the pit's floor.

"Come here." I giggled pulling his hand with me.

I found the short brunette girl stitching up an old mans arm.

"Mila!" I called.

"It's Mia 'mam." She corrected.

"Right, sorry. It's been a long night." I smiled.

She smiled back before quickly returning to her work.

"I need you to-" I looked for words to describe my situation as the lack of sleep slowly ate away at my brain cells.

"You have a pager right?" I asked.

She nodded not taking her eyes off of her work.

"Yes use it." I responded. "Tell Dr. Mendes to give you all of my charts if any of them show the slightest sign of post-op infection page me." I said sternly. "I don't care how late it is."

She nodded.

"Anything else mam?" She asked putting her tools down and turning to face me.

I looked over the stitch on the old mans arm.

"Tell Dr. Mendes you're on his service tomorrow." I spoke. "You'd be good in plastics." I smiled.

She nodded.

I grabbed Charlie's hand and began to walk towards the doors.

"And tell him I sent you!" I yelled before rounding the corner.

"So this Dr. Mendes?" Charlie laughed. "Am I going to have any problems with him?" He asked.

"Problems?" I asked pressing the elevator button to the main floor. "What kind of problems?"

"You know like having to beat him up." He spoke.

"And what would you do that for?" I asked.

"If he tries messing with my girl." He punched the air making explosion sounds as each punch hit the air.

I giggled. "Your girl?"

"Yeah." He said wrapping his large arm around me tightly pulling me closer.

"We'll see about that after dinner." I smirked.

He just laughed shaking his head as the elevator doors opened on the lobby.

"May I?" He asked holding out his hand.

"You may." I giggled.

He pulled me off the elevator spinning me and wrapping his arms around me.

He placed a light kiss on my forehead before pulling me into his side and walking out the door.

"So Mr. Ruth where are we going this fine evening?" I giggled.

"I was thinking Marcellini's down on 5th." He smiled.

"Sounds amazing." I smiled.

Looking down at my appearance I suddenly frowned.

"I'm still in scrubs." I groaned. "I don't have any clothes."

"No need to worry." He laughed. "It just shows everyone that my girl is an amazing surgeon."

"Stop calling me your girl." I groaned.

"You'll see." He smirked. "After dinner that's all you'll want me to call you." He laughed.

"We'll see." I giggled.

He opened the passenger door for me and I got in and watched as he carefully shut it.

He quickly got in the driver seat and sped away to Marcellini's.

"I like your car." I commented feeling the leather beneath my scrub covered legs.

"Thanks." He smiled. "I just got it."

"Music?" He asked.

I nodded. "Only if I get to pick." I smirked.

"Knock yourself out." He motioned to the radio.

I quickly skimmed the channels landing on some acoustic cover.

"Really?" He laughed.

"This is what I listen to in surgeries." I smiled laying back and resting my head on the seat.

I mimicked my fingers into the most recent routine surgery I had done.

After about five minutes I looked up to meet Charlie's eyes and the non moving pavement before us.

"How long have we been sitting here?" I asked looking around at the parking lot.

"Just a couple minutes." He smirked.

"Why didn't you tell me?" I exclaimed lightly punching his shoulder.

"I like watching you." He smiled. "I don't get to do that very often."

"Don't get so cocky." I smirked.

"Let's go eat." He smiled.

I nodded opening my door but it didn't open very far before Charlie was on the other side.

"What did you do fly over here?" I laughed.

"Something like that." He smiled.

We walked into the restaurant hand in hand.

"Reservation for 2 under Ruth for 9." Charlie spoke.

"Right this way sir."

The waiter pulled out my chair for me and handed us our menus.

"Today's specials are Chicken Marsala with a out vegetable of the day-" I began to zone out watching as Charlie listened intently to the waiters words.

His brown eyes almost resembled that of someone I knew.

Shawn.

However Shawn's were a much deeper brown.

Like you could look into them for hours and still never reach the bottom.

They were bottomless and endless and his lips...

"Brianna?" Charlie asked.

"Hm?" I hummed.

"Wine?"

I nodded. "You decide."

Charlie picked out a wine and as my mind traveled back to Shawn a pit began to form in my stomach.

Not only because of what I did but because of my brother.

My dead brother.

Deceased.

Gone for good.

Truly never to be heard from again.

And that's what hurt the most.
