Chapter Four
Cinderstorm
Brambleflower leaped out of the camp, and it promptly dissolved into chaos.
Friend turned on friend; Gingerpaw snarled a defensive reply to Frostcloud, and Hailheart growled at Greenflower. Applestar was sitting, wide-eyed, on a rock, seemingly in shock. Amberclaw growled at Lightningfeather. Cinderstorm watched, feeling like she was being torn apart. No! This can't be happening!
But worst of all was Rainkit, Briarkit, Fernkit, and Emberkit's reactions. They were all different. Rainkit growled at Applestar (and even though Cinderstorm hated Applestar for killing Moonpaw, she still felt a little sorry for her, and promptly got mad at herself), Briarkit was staring at her, bare shock reflected in her young eyes, and Cinderstorm felt her heart break. They're too young to have to go through this! Fernkit was looking betrayed, her eyes displaying hurt. And Emberkit just looked confused.
"But... Mother... I-"
Rainkit cut off Emberkit with a snarl. "Save it. She lied to us, she doesn't deserve to speak to us." She was staring at Applestar with incredible rage. Cinderstorm was astonished at the young kit and the anger she felt. What could have ever happened to make her have such a hot temper?
Muttering something, Applestar gazed at her kits in openmouthed horror. "I never meant for you to find out..."
"So it's true?!" Fernkit squeaked, her bright green eyes stretching wide. "Is that why we don't look like CloudClan, me and Briarkit? Because we're not pure Clan?"
"How could you?" Briarkit asked, her voice soft, trembling, and broken. "I- I trusted you! You're my... My mother but you lied to us!"
"No- no," Applestar moaned. Cinderstorm was shocked; she seemed in so much pain. "I-"
She turned and padded away, head down and tail drooping.
Rainkit turned to her sisters. "We don't need her," she promised. "We'll make do on our own."
"But who will we suckle from?" Fernkit piped up.
Rainkit shook her head. "We'll figure something out."
Cinderstorm turned, her eyes swimming.
How could one cat create such a ripple in our streams?
Sunpool hurried up. "Cinderstorm. Listen, I've been thinking. I hate to ask this of you, but you know your powers? I thought you could-"
"Great StarClan, Sunpool, keep your voice down," Cinderstorm hissed, glancing around fearfully. Nobody was quite within earshot except for the kits, but they were too busy discussing their problem to pay any attention.
"Right, sorry," Sunpool mewed brusquely. She continued in a quieter tone. "But I was thinking that I don't think that this Brambleflower cat is telling the whole truth. So I thought you could follow her, and then I could teleport to you, and we could go back afterwards."
Cinderstorm's first reaction was shock. Why is she asking me to do this? Her natural personality was one that didn't allow her to be controlled, especially since she had town more confident in the past moons. She didn't want to be controlled, and if she would do something, it was because she wanted to. She was independent. She was going to stay that way.
Then she felt angry. Why was Sunpool asking her to do this? It was her power, and shouldn't she be able to use it for her own reasons? She didn't want to allow Sunpool to think that she could control her. Suddenly, she saw Sunpool in a whole new light. Was she just trying to exploit her powers? But she couldn't- Sunpool had been her friend before she had known about the powers. So that couldn't be it.
Maybe Sunpool just wanted to help the Clan. But why? The "Clan" was built on a fragile structure of Applestar and Cloverfur, (who was currently hiding in her den and probably not attending to Sorrelkit, who hadn't improved or worsened), and Sunpool hated them. So why would she want to help the Clan?
Anyway, the only people she cared about enough to want to help them in the Clan was Cinderstorm and maybe Lightningfeather, since Goldleaf was dead. And they were able to take care of themselves.
So what was her motive?
Well, she wouldn't mind helping Sunpool, she supposed, because Sunpool was her friend. Besides, she was suspicious of Brambleflower. Could she find out some of the truth? Strange things were at play here.
She lowered her head and looked Sunpool directly in the eye.
"I'll do it."
:) there was a different version that Wattpad was mean and didn't publish :( but here's a new version I like better!
