Chapter 9: Sally and Paul's Will
Percy's POV:
So, my wife stopped me from murdering Hera today. Kinda wish she didn't, but she was right about my sister needing me, instead of Hera's head. Also, I think Hestia may have solved the whole Hera is still a bitch problem, as she threatened to get their mother involved.
Now, I've never met my grandmother, Rhea, before, but considering how the big three argued over who's her favorite child, my money's on Hestia, I imagine that she's nice and loving. But given that bringing Rhea into the matter was used as a threat, I'm pretty happy we got off Olympus before her arrival, if it ever occurred.
Anyways, most of the afternoon and night was spent comforting Estella, even though she was asleep for most of that time, which resulted in her barely eating anything for dinner.
By the time morning arrived we were getting her to talk to us again, even though her word choice was carefully selected and spoken nervously. Which left us with only an hour or so before we had to go to a lawyers office for the will/final testimony of my mother and Paul.
"Estella why are you so nervous to talk to us" Artemis asked gently, as we were trying to get her back to her usual self before we left for the morning.
Estella seemed to think for a while before deciding upon her words and whispering, "because I don't belong here"
Now if you asked me I'm pretty sure Artemis was going over hundreds, if not thousands, of different and all equally extremely painful ways to kill Hera, and I think she regrets stopping me from killing her yesterday. But all of her anger was gone with a singular deep breath, which is impressive by any means. "Estella. Listen to me sweetie. Percy is your brother, yes" Artemis asked, and Estella barely nodded her head. "and I'm his wife correct" Artemis asked, which got another head nod. "Then you are my sister-in-law, correct" Artemis asked.
Estella nodded again, "but why does that matter" she said sounding a bit depressed.
"It matters because you are our family and you belong here just as much as mine and your brother's adopted daughters do" Artemis said and she was nearly crying, though she won't admit that, and don't you dare tell her I said that.
"Then why did that lady say I didn't belong here" Estella asked, and I could tell she took it personally
I being the reasonable person here, knowing I would end up insulting Hera and not helping my sister whatsoever, let Artemis handel the question, "I...I honestly don't know why she said what she said Estella". Estella had her thinking face on, but before she could respond Artemis continued, "You know she has said similar things to me as well, but that's only because I'm a child of her husband and not her and her husband"
"Then why does she say those things" Estella asked
"She's a mentally deranged psychopath that is all I'm mightier than thou, who believes that anything outside of her version of the perfect family is an abomination that deserves torment and pain" I thought. Or well I think I did, but the look Artemis is giving me says otherwise, and that I should start running.
"What does that mean" Estella asked
"It means she is self-centered, thinking the herself is above all others, and if something doesn't fit her definition of family she dislikes it. Which is why she normally directs the comments at me" Artemis said to me with a glare.
"Then why me" Estella asked
"Because you by blood relation are my half-sister, but like my other siblings, Kym and Tyson, I just consider you my sibling, nothing else to it. You are my sister, no matter what at the end of the day. And that doesn't fit the mean lady's view of family, nor do children that aren't of spouses, which are including but not limited to adopted children, children from previous marriages, inherited children, and bastard children, which are children resulting from an affair" I answered and Artemis looked at me like I was mad for telling my little sister this
"Do any of those apply to me" Estella asked
"Inherited children might, but just know it's not your fault Estella. And please remember that for me, that everythings that has happened within the past few days, that none of it was your fault" I asked of her. Which is a lot to ask of a child, of any age.
"Ok" Estella said, starting to come back to her usual happy manner when she's with Artemis and myself.
"Now who's my favorite little sister" I asked
Estella seemed to think for a moment, "Is Kym a little sister of yours"
"No she's my big sister" I said
"Then it's me. I'm your favorite little sister" Estella said.
"Yes, Yes you are" I said, which got a small chuckle from Artemis as she held onto Estella. "Now are you ready to go do some boring legal matters or do you want to stay here with Thalia" I asked
Estella took one look to see Thalia grinning like a mad man, before turning back to me and saying, "Let's do the boring things".
Line Break: General Kenobi
So I teleported all three of us, Artemis, Estella and myself, to an alleyway a couple streets over so we could finish walking there or in Estella's case being carried. I also took the time of teleporting to change my clothes into a button down shirt, a blue tie, and blue pants, that were mysteriously black when I landed. I'm blaming Aphrodite for that last one.
Artemis and Estella were somehow in matching black dresses, and I have a feeling that Aphrodite may die soon, hearing my wife curse her under her breath for the outfit change. While Estella, well I think she was pondering where her old clothes went. But hearing Artemis cursing about Aphrodite changing her outfit probably answered her questions, as she just started holding onto Artemis doing her best to comfort her.
When we finally reached the outside of the office building Artemis had finished her cursing, and we had officer Smith waiting for us. "Are you assigned this case" I asked, as we walked into the office building.
"Yes, and do you have any questions about the case" She asked, as we stepped into the elevator to get to the lawyer's office
"Nope" I said.
"How's Estella holding up" she asked
"She's...well I don't really know, but she seems to be fine, though an unexpected visitor said some harsh things in front of her yesterday that shook her up a bit, she's back to normal today" I replied, as the elevator came to a stop and the doors opened
We stepped out of the elevator in silence and walked in the lawyers office at the precise time the meeting is supposed to start. Artemis and I received many glares from Paul's relatives, which Estella thankfully missed as she was hiding in Artemis hair, much to the dislike of Paul's relatives.
Now you may be asking why I call them Paul's relatives. Well that's because that is all that they are to me, and I couldn't care less about them. But Percy they are innocent and haven't done anything wrong, you may say. Well that's a lie and whoever told you that is probably near Hera levels of pettiness.
Paul's relatives, although never to mine or my mother's face, hated my mother and me, and spoke incredibly harshly about us. I almost hoped my mother would find out and sue for slander, even if it would be unsuccessful, as to just send a message. They are also intolerant of other religious choices, and blame my mother and myself for converting Paul away from the one true God and towards the devil that is paganism, i.e. the Greco-Roman gods. And well, if you ask me, it's kinda hard not to believe in the greek gods when they come by the apartment every other week, when I'm there, because they *cough*Zeus*cough* needs an alibi for where they've been all night, or they *cough*Hermes and Apollo*cough* lost something and are too lazy, 'busy', or embarrassed to look for it themselves.
"Late as usual, Jackson" Paul's father said snarkily. Yeahhhhh...if the other males in this room survive a week after this, remind me to go check in on Nico and the underworld to make sure it's not experiencing an ice age.
"Actually I'll have you know I'm arriving on time as you have arrived early. Which is not at any fault of my own as I did not influence your choice to arrive early" I replied...fine I sassed, I just couldn't help it.
With that most of Paul's relatives gave an annoyed huff and I could hear Estella whisper to Artemis "why are they annoyed", and Artemis whispered response, "because your brother can't stop his sassy side", Estella retorted with a "he's your husband you control him"
I have never been more proud of my little sister than in that moment right there,...but she really needs to wise up to whom she can and can't sass. I looked over to officer Smith and found she was struggling really hard not to laugh at the interaction between the two.
"Well now I know who you and your brother got your sass from" Artemis replied, which got a chuckle from Estella.
We all took a seat and Officer Smith said she'll be waiting outside if any of us want to speak with her afterwards. A few short moments after she left, the Lawyer came out with the legal documents outlying the final testimony and will of Sally and Paul.
"Is the family of Sally Jackson-Blofis and Paul Blofis here" the lawyer asked, to which a bunch of yeah's and yes's were said.
"Alright first the case of their child, Estella Jackson-Blofis, shall be left to the care of Diana and Perseus Jackson, the sister-in-law and half-brother of Estella" The Lawyer started, and this caused such an outrage among Paul's relatives that I wondered if we would get anything done.
"They are too young to care for a child" Paul's father argued, and this pissed Artemis off to levels that only Hera had made possible, as she's technically the oldest person in the room by a landslide.
"So what? I'm four months pregnant, have a loving and caring husband that won't leave me, am fairly well off with a secure job as is he. And what are you going do when my children are born sue me for parental rights" she sassed, and holy hera, this is might end up being a long day.
"No you are too young for children, and you should put them up for adoption" Paul's mother said.
The moment she put Estella down into the seat next to her I wrapped my arms around her to stop her from doing what she usually does to disrespectful mortals.
After her cursing in Ancient Greek stopped, like an actual hour later, she calmed down and picked Estella back up. The lawyer asked if we could continue, which got a bunch of head nods as the mortals were left confused by what was just said as it probably sounded like nonsense to them.
"The estate, furniture, and vehicles of Sally and Paul, shall be sold off to pay for any debts that they have been acquired and any amount of money left over shall be left in a trust fund to pay for the care, wellbeing, and education of their daughter Estella Jackson-Blofis, under the apointers Diana and Perseus Jackson" The Lawyer said causing an uproar among Paul's relatives wondering why they weren't chosen.
After they calmed down which took a while, the Lawyer continued, "For the parent's of Paul Blofis we leave one penny each" The Lawyer said, and whole crap the amount of shock and surprise coming off of them was priceless.
"To Paul's Brothers and Sisters, and sibling-in-laws, we also leave one penny each" The lawyer continued
"To the nieces and nephews also one penny each" The Lawyer said. I could tell he was having a hard time not cracking up, as it was clear to him when the will was being written up, that they didn't necessarily like Paul's relatives, and this was a way preventing them for suing claiming that they were forgotten about, and he was enjoying the reaction of the kin.
"To Diana and Perseus Jackson 10% of the remaining wealth, and to Estella Jackson-Blofis the remainder of wealth in the care of Diana and Perseus Jackson" The lawyer said, which surprise caused another round of uproar from the others.
"I guess you were mom's favorite" I whispered into Estella's ear, and she let out a light giggle, as she's favored over me.
"Now there is only one last item to be given with in the will" The Lawyer said, which drew everyone's attention as usually the best is for last. "From Sally Jackson-Blofis. To my Daughter-in-law Diana, I leave you my cooking recipes on the condition that you allow access to and teach them to Estella, and pass them onto your own children as well" The Lawyer finished, which drew shocked expressions from Paul's relatives as they were probably expecting it to be gold or something. If you ask me it is, and I would be disappointed in being left out, but I kinda already know most of mom's cooking recipes.
