Chapter 21
Olivia North
I gave the last document I signed to Nikkie so she can transmit it to the oil division. I looked at my phone to check the time and it's only 11:30 in the morning.
"Anything else, Ms. North?" she asked and I looked up at her. She's standing in front of me holding 3 sets of documents on her left hand. I smiled at her and told her to sit.
"Nikkie, aside from the job, why did you accept the post to be my secretary?" I asked her while shutting off my computer.
You can see it in her face that she did not expect my query. I raised my brows at her to encourage her to answer.
"Oh, uhm... At first, I only thought about the salary because the company's offer was twice as much as that of other secretarial jobs. I was so happy when I was listed as part of the three applicants who passed the HR interview out of the ten, I asked myself why were they screening us so strictly and even told us about the salary before job offer. Then, on the day of my interview with you, I realized why the HR offered us that kind of salary. Miss North, please don't get angry." she pleaded when she saw I furrowed my brows.
"I am not. Continue." I calmly stated as I leaned back on my chair. For the record, I furrowed my brows because I didn't know that they offered twice the salary of an average secretary to be my sec.
"After my interview with you, I thought that you won't choose me because of my lack of years of secretarial experience. But when the HR called me that night, I was ecstatic and nervous because I had a job and nervous because you will be my boss." she said hesitantly and looked at my face to see if there's a hint of anger.
"You were so intimidating, Ms. North. In my first two weeks of being your secretary, I happened to think to pass my resignation statement twice because I thought that I was not efficient to be one. But then you keep on encouraging me, pushing me to be perfect, and most especially, your kind to us, your employees. 4 months of being your secretary, I haven't experienced what the media foretold us about you. Yes, you were a little hot headed sometimes but you never once humiliate and discriminate us. You also make sure that you reprimand us in private, not in front of so many people. Oh, in addition, you also don't compel me to render OT so I can still have my social life." she paused and smiled genuinely at me and continued, "So to answer your question, Ms. North, I accepted to be your secretary not just because of the salary but because of the good work ethics you exemplify."
After she said that, I smiled at her.
"You know, why I chose you?" I asked her and leaned my body on the table. Curiosity was etched on her face as she tilted her head to the left.
"Because you were so nervous that time. You couldn't even look at my face. The two women who I interviewed first, they were so confident because they thought that their years of experience could make them get into the company and also they were so irritating. So I chose you instead and I felt that you and I will make a good team." I smiled and winked at her. She chuckled and thanked me.
"You know Nikkie, I just hope that you won't resign once Zac assigned me another shit ton of divisions." I joked but I really was hoping for her not to resign because I really like her as my secretary.
"I won't, Ms. North. I know I won't get a boss like you again." she said
"Yes, because most of the bosses out there are either too old and boring, or ugly." I joked and we laughed.
"Anyway, since I am free the whole afternoon, I will scoot now. Tell those people who will be looking for me that I went on a date." I told her and put my laptop inside my bag.
She smiled at me and nodded. "Noted, Miss."
She went out and I dialled Niccolo's number. Yes I already have his number because the next day after the Distillery Night, I received a text from him asking me if I was okay. Since that night, our actions toward one another went up to the next level. Well, I guess it was more of me than him. I was always the one who initiates the touching such as linking my arm around his arm, placing my hand near his for him to hold and leaning my head on to his shoulder. Also, awkward silence was replaced by comfortable silence. It's like we've been friends for a long time. Honestly, who would've thought that I would get so comfortable with him when at first I was so vexed to even think about looking at him.
"Hello." I heard Niccolo's serious husky voice on the line. I bet he didn't look at the caller ID
"It's Olivia." I answered while smiling. I grabbed my Celiné medium phantom bag and stood up to head for my door.
"Oh hey. Are you alright?" he asked in a cheerful voice.
"Yup, I am. What makes you think that I was not fine? Anyway, I called to ask if I can fetch Dylan from his Taekwondo class and hang out with him?" I asked him curtly.
"You're not busy today?" He asked and I heard the shuffling of papers on the background. I walked out of my office and saw Nikkie walked out from the pantry with her tupperware on her hands. I guess she heated her lunch.
"I'm free for the whole afternoon and I have no pending jobs that needed my attention." I told him as I pressed the down button of the lift.
"I see, but are you sure you want to hang out with Dylan? He can be a handful sometimes, also you can take a rest today." What? Why would I take a rest when I wanted to see the little devil. It's been three days since I played with him.
"Nick, shut up. If I wanted to sleep I won't call you to ask for permission to fetch your son. Besides, I'm perfectly rested today and I miss the little devil so bad." I said flatly.
I heard him chuckling.
"I will disconnect if you continue to laugh." I joked but in a serious tone. I smiled and checked the elevator screen to see which floor the lift is in.
"Ok fine I will stop now." he said seriously but he failed to stop his chuckle.
"Niccolo. The lift is near my floor. Can I fetch Dylan?" I asked hurriedly.
"Of course you can. I'll call the studio to notify them that you will be the one to fetch Dylan." he stated and I heard Didith called him.
"Mr. Knights, our Japanese partners are in the conference room now."
"Alright. Olivia, I have to go now, I'll let Didith call the studio, okay." he said in an apologetic tone.
"Alright, the lift's here too. See you later, Nick." I said as I stepped inside the lift.
Today, I asked Jones to drive me to Dylan's taekwondo class. I arrived there just before the class' dismissal. I peeped on the small glass window on the door and saw Dylan sitting in front, I smiled because he was so cute wearing his taekwondo robe with its white belt tied around his small waist.
I then went to the waiting chairs by the studio to take a sit and wait for the little devil. I smiled at the parents who were also waiting for their child. As I took a sit, a woman in her mid-thirties talked to me.
"Hello, I'm Bernadette, you're child must be new here." the woman introduced herself and extended her right hand for me to shake.
"Hi, I'm Olivia, I'm actually here to fetch Dylan, my boyfriend's son." I told her politely and shook her hands. Her eyes widened and she broadened her smile even more.
"Oh, so you're here for Dylan Knights? You must be Olivia North. Dylan kept babbling about you to my son." Bernadette told me excitedly.
"Oh yeah, uhm, I am Olivia North." I affirmed her carefully.
"You know, Dylan kept talking about you to my son. He said that you were very beautiful, kind and took care of him very well. He also told my son that his wish to have a mom was already granted although you're still not living with him."
That got me shocked to the core. Me? His mother? I never thought that Dylan would think of me as his mother. I mean I didn't know that he was wishing for a mother because he never once acted nor showed me or Niccolo that he's looking for a mom. This is a surprise for me.
"Oh. That was flattering." I told Bernadette
"Indeed, because kids' knows who to trust when it comes to love." she told me and patted my shoulder. Before I could reply, the door to Dylan's class opened. I went to the door but the mentor called my name.
"Ms. Olivia North?" he asked and I paused to look at him. The mentor looked a bit young, maybe he's only in his late twenties.
"Yes? May I help you?" I asked as I neared him. He looked at me from head to toe without any ill-intensions.
"I am Jacob, one of Dylan's mentor. We were notified by Mr. Knights' secretary that you will be the one to take Dylan home today." he said as we went inside the studio where they practice martial arts. Dylan saw me immediately and ran towards me. I bent my left knee to welcome him for a hug. When he neared me, he jumped and hugged me excitedly. I kissed his cheek and carried him, I left my bag on the floor to get it later.
"I'm sorry. Yes I am here to take Dylan home. Do I have to sign some papers?" I asked Jacob apologetically.
He smiled at me and nodded.
"Yes, Ms. North, we have protocols when an authorized person shall fetch our student. I hope it's not a bother to you to sign one." he explained and walked to the table. I put down Dylan and told him that I need to sign something first before we go. He nodded and went to the back of the studio.
"Here, please sign here." Jacob pointed the paper and I read it quickly before affixing my signature then I smiled and thanked him. I turned around to grab my bag and saw Dylan running towards me with his turtle bag on his hand. I met him halfway and bent down on knees again.
"Dylan, what did your dad said about running?" I asked while I was groping his back if it was wet from sweat.
"Oops I'm sowwy but I was just excited to see you. I thought Jenko was the one to take me today and go to daddy's office." he said cheerfully and hugged my neck. I smiled and took his turtle bag which, I might add was so cute.
"It's ok, sweetie, just don't do it again okay. Now, where are your clothes? You need to change." I asked him and stood up.
"Hewe in my backpack." he said and I took his bag from him, I held his hand and went to the toilet to change his clothes.
"Young man, where do you want to eat?" I asked him as I double checked his car seat buckles around him. Yup, I bought one for him. He was so into his toy car on his hand so I pinched lightly his already rosey cheeks from his taekwondo class.
"Anywhewe." He asnwered me nonchalantly. I chuckled and looked at Jones beside me who's also smiling at the little devil on my left.
"Let's go to the Burger Shack." I smiled at Jones and went around the Range Rover for me to hop inside.
While having lunch, I asked Dylan if he wanted to go to the kid's cafe wherein he can play with other kids, eat sweets, and such. It's basically their version of heaven. He agreed excitedly. Then I took a video of him eating his veggies silently and sent it to Niccolo. I took a lot of pictures of him as well as tons of selfie with him. I sent our wacky faces to Niccolo and captioned it, look what you're missing out with the monkey-covering-its-eyes emoji.
When we arrived at the Kid's cafe, Dylan already forgot about me and went to the slide immediately, I let him play by himself and played with other kids for 2 hours non stop. Then, when boredom got me, I called him to play, jump, and bounce with me in the trampoline. I got so many weird glares on my way to the trampoline area because I was overdressed. What I was wearing was a light blush colored embroidered dress with a cap sleeve, a pencil skirt fit and a peplum. I ignored them because I'm here to have fun with Dylan.
After 30 minutes of jumping and bouncing with Dylan, I told him that we needed to go because his dad will be calling me anytime now. We went to the toilet again to change his clothes that I bought before coming here. I wiped his hair dry by the towel, applied baby powder on his body and took out the matching gray sweats from the paperbag. After I put it on him, I washed his red sticky face to remove the dirt and stickiness of his sweat. Then after I changed his clothes, I dried myself with the tissue and took out my powder to touch up my face and spritz some rose water on my face to freshen me up.
As if on cue, my phone rang and I saw Niccolo's name on the caller ID.
"Hello." I answered and clutched the phone
between my ear and shoulder to help Dylan down from the sink.
"Hey, I'm on my way to the kid's cafe. Are you two done playing?" he asked tiredly.
"Yup, we're currently freshening up. Should we go out now or we'll wait for you inside?" I asked him and opened the toilet's door and went out with Dylan.
"Just wait for me inside, Olivia. I'll be there in 3 minutes."
"Okay. Dylan, do you want to talk to daddy?" I asked Dylan who's currently walking beside me. He shook his head from left to right. I chuckled.
"Nick, he doesn't want to talk to you." I said still laughing.
"Funny huh?" he asked playfully.
"Mhmmm." I mumbled then saw Jones waiting for us to the reception area.
"Ms. Olivia, there are groups of paparazzis outside." Jones informed me. I widened my eyes because Dylan would be scared by them, also, they will take pictures of him. Niccolo worked hard to make Dylan's life private. I should not destroy what he worked hard for, Dylan's safety.
"I'll wait for you at the back." I heard Niccolo uttered.
"Jones, where's the backdoor?" I asked him distressed as I gave him my handbag and carried Dylan.
"There are also paps at the backdoor. I've checked for another safe way to get out but they rounded all the doors." Jones informed us.
I took a deep breath and stomp my feet.
"After so many days, why are they following me again?" I asked angrily.
"Because they still believe that you and Cameron are in a secret relationship." Jones answered. I huffed while Dylan leaned on my shoulder to rest his little head. Aww, my poor Dylan...
"Just go out from where the smallest amount of paps were. Just cover Dylan's face please, Livy." Niccolo pleaded.
"Ok, don't worry about your son." I assured him and asked Jones where the least amount of paps are. He told me that it's in the east door. I told Nick immediately and he informed us that he's actually near it so we hurriedly went to the door.
Before we got out, I told Dylan that we will be playing a game of hide and seek. He will be hiding his face from the people outside, he agreed immediately and I put his hoody on his head. Thank God I chose to bought the hoodie and thank God for its large hood.
After I made sure that he's well covered, I called Niccolo to inform him that we will be exiting. I nodded to Jones to open the door, I saw 8-10 men with their cameras taking pictures of us. Jones tried his best to block some of them. I held Dylan's head securely from the cameras but one of the men held my arm and turned me around harshly for him to take pictures of me. With that, I loosened my hold to Dylan and thought that he will fall from me. Thankfully, I had a fast reflex and held him securely. I was so mad at the man so I pushed him, he was taken aback at my actions so he fell on his butt.
"Don't ever, ever touch me again." I said angrily while point my index finger at him.
"I will sue anyone who touches them again." I heard Niccolo's deep angry voice. I looked at my right and saw him glaring at the whom I pushed. He put his arm around me and Dylan protectively and walked to his car.
He opened the passenger seat and I hopped in with Dylan. I placed him gently on his car seat and buckled him up. Niccolo started the car and drove.
"Nick, I'm so sorry." I apologised as I held his shoulder.
"It's fine, it's not your fault. Are you okay? Did he hurt you?" he asked while gritting his teeth. I can see from the rearview mirror that he's containing his anger.
"He did not. I'm fine, we're fine, Niccolo." I assured him as I rubbed my hands on his right arm.
"Are you sure? Because I can..."
"I am fine, dad." I said to lift up his mood
"What did you call me?" he asked in disbelief. I leaned back on the seat smiling.
"I'm hungry, dad." I said as I looked at him in the rearview mirror teasing him.
He rolled his eyes at me.
"Where do you want to eat?" he sighed and smiled.
