Chapter 2: A Step into Adventure
It took a while but with the help of the villagers I managed a quick and cheap funeral for Father, passing off as a stranger who happened upon the collapsed house. Thankfully I had already known a little illusion magic, I'd studied in my spare time so I was able to make an illusion for Wendy's body. As I stood in front of my father's casket and closed it, I whispered, "I promise your death will not be in vain. I will do my best to help both Wendy and the dragons."
After father's casket was lowered into the ground, as well as my sisters and myself's, I disappeared in front of their eyes, melting into the wind, the tear that had been running down my cheek falling slowly to the ground. "I will find you Wendy. I promise." I smiled as the villagers gasped. "A mage," said one. "A powerful mage," said their friend. I smiled wider and used currant to start towards Rose Town, my first stop, a small town that was known for their gardens. Maybe I'd get glimpse of Wendy there!
Tanya was a quiet one, she usually stayed quiet, observing and only once and a while commenting, though I always knew she was there. As I was heading over the Great Desert I fell to the ground with a plop. Dang, I had thought my magic energy would have lasted longer, then I remembered, I hadn't uncreated 'Wendy'. So, I quickly did while I unwillingly slipped into unconsciousness.
The first thing that I heard when I awoke startled me so much that I nearly lept to my feet at it, "Orange?" I started, confused at the man in front of me. He had uneven, shaggy black hair and blue eyes that had a glint of humor in them. He wore a long traveling cape that went to the ground but had his hood pulled off. He was offering he an orange fruit that I had only had every once and while at village celebrations which he lowered at my reaction and dropped in a tan pouch on his belt inside his cloak that was closed with a thing of twine.
"Geez, no need to bite," he said, looking me over. "I'm just a traveling, training mage who helps out poor idiots like you who seem to have forgotten their water bottles... and their food... and their oranges," he started laughing. I just stared. "Hey," he said, waving a hand in front of my face. "Anyone hom-" He didn't get to finish his sentence 'cause of my punch to his face. It wsn't a good one really, but he wasn't worth it. 'Idiot'? Who did he think he was?!?
"Hey!" He said. "What was that for?" I glared and then spoke in a pointed tone. "Idiot? Really? Sure I forgot to let go of a spell, but who just randomly insults a stranger? I could've made it through!!! These powers are just new to me. I'm still learning my limits!" "Hehehe," he said, rubbing his cheek where I'd hook'd him. "Well, you see, unlike my brother, I've always been a little loose... I've been trying to get better with people by helping them out while tunning my powers, but what you just did is, sadly, a common reaction..."
"..." I went quiet. "Well?" He asked? "Well what?" I asked him. "Well you seemed to be thinking so I thought maybe..." Again, I found my self reduced to staring, and then I found myself doubled over on the floor so hard, laughing. "Y-you thought? When was the last time you thought anythin-" I fell over, as I had been starting to get up.
He ran over, worried. "You okay?" He asked. I glared, "I just fell onto the ground, do you think I'm okay?" "Hehe, sorry, stupid question. New question though..." I groaned at the thought of another question. "What hurts?" He asked. I glanced at him. "Finally, a useful question," I grumbled. "Well?" He prodded. "I have extreme magic exhaustion and haven't eaten or drank for three days," I said thinking, since this all started. Gosh it's been a while. "Oh and probably my depression acting up again." I said, adding it on to the end. Tanya had told me that I had symptoms for it and she had been trying to keep my thoughts positive.
"Hmm," he said, thoughtfully. "Well, the only thing that cures magic exhaustion is rest, so I can only help with the other problems. Orange? It cures everything! ...except for magic exhaustion, and probably the depression bit. But I'm not a doctor so... Orange?" He asked, holding out the shiny orange fruit. "Sure," I shrugged. "I'm Abuz," he said, introducing himself. "Wisp." I said, returning the favor. As I peeled the fruit I absent mindedly asked him where he'd gotten it. "Oh," he said. "Well, it has to do with my magic. You see, my brother can move extremely quickly, or teleport, while I can pull items out of hats and bags when my magic circle is under the items so I drew a magic circle under an orange container in some city, don't worry. I send yearly 'donations', though I bet he still wonders where they go..." I laughed a little and then a wave of darkness washed over me, though I did manage to hear a quiet, "G'night Wisp." As a warmth settled over me, like a blanket.
