Chapter 1
I woke up. Such a pity, I was having a lovely dream... I had been in a forest, green and lush, just like the ones I'd read about in books. I had been having this dream a lot recently, all ending with a flash of... I think it was pink hair? And some blue? I was really curious about this but I knew I was awake because the dream disappeared and I could hear the hum of engines and motors around me. Thankfully it was only a hum, since my room was in the quietest part of the house. I slowly opened my brown eyes, still not wanting to awake from my dream of the forest. I lifted my arm to peel a lock of my mid-back long blonde hair off my face.
I sat up slowly, lifting my head off of my pink pillow and pushing off my pink comforter, in my pink room. The pink was getting tiring, even though it was proven to up my happiness meter. My happiness meter... the thing that was on my mind the most. I'm always healthy (everyone always was), I don't need to worry about money (my father's a famous scientist), but I wasn't happy. My father is all the family that I've ever had. Mother died only a few months after I was born, father won't tell me how, and since (I'm told) he's been a workaholic, never taking time off with me. I was alone, sure I had AIs (Artificial Intelligence, or Artificial Life Forms) to look after me, but I had never met another human being before. All I knew I was taught by AIs, or by books. I heard a knock at the door, and the sound of a motor.
"You may enter, Spetto," I said in a calm manner. With a click the door opened, revealing a robot. The robot, or, Spetto, as I had named it, or her, as I had decided, entered the room. "Did you sleep well, Princess Lucy?" she asked in an emotionless voice. "Yes, Spetto, I did," I told her, still sitting in bed. She roboticly nodded her head and moved to my wooden wardrobe and began to pick out my outfit. "What is my schedule to day, Spetto?" I asked my assistant. "You will begin today by taking your breakfast pills and health pills, then you will start your classes with Bero and Ribbon for the day. After that you will take your lunch pills and have personal study for the afternoon. This evening is left open." I nod. "Thank you, Spetto." She nods again, and leaves the room, my clothes left out on the coffee table.
After Spetto left I sighed and put on the clothes. Even though my father was not around at all there were still rules he had set out, including dressing rules. Today, I was wearing a pink dress with white ruffles, pink shoes, and my hair up in a proper bun. After I checked myself one more time in the mirror, and sighed, I headed to the wash room, where I swallowed my health and breakfast pills with water. After wiping my mouth daintily with the napkin purposely left by the wash basin, I walked properly, back straight, chin up, never looking at the floor, hands at my sides. When I reached Bero's classroom I sat primly and opened my foreign language book. This was all review, of course, I had finished learning my last language in 3rd Grade, but I had to keep up to date to make sure that I was fluent. I had several conversations in several random languages from around the world with Bero, and afterwards we reviewed calculus and started on advanced chemistry.
Soon, it was time for me to take my lunch pill. I washed it down with more water and headed to the library. I used to love library time, but recently? Not as much. I would sit in this library and read, and read, and read so much that I could read extremely quickly, and now, I had finished all 12, 354, 888 books. No, really, I counted. Sure, Dad sent in another 12 books each week but those were all easily finished the day they came. I had also memorized some stuff... like a dictionary... and half the encyclopedias... I sighed and sat in my favorite reading chair. Sure, I still had to sit all prim and proper, even though my back looonged to bend out of shape and let myself slump into the chair, but of course I couldn't let it. Well, I sighed I again, there's still a few books I haven't read. I let my gaze wander around the room, and it eventually landed on a metal safe. The metal safe is a safe my father had installed before I was allowed in the library, and I knew that there were some books in there.
I didn't know what they were about, but I did know that I wanted to read them and had to do with the mysterious word that starts with U that the robots sometimes almost let slip. I also know that the U-word has to do with my happiness meter... I sighed again. Well, I may as well get back to memorizing the encyclopedias... And now you know my life, up until the day it all changed...
