[Chapter 2]

Flashback

"(F/n), this'll be good for you."

"But I don't want to go!"

"But you get to learn all kinds of things that me or your brothers' can't teach you."

"Like what?"

"Well, sewing, knitting, crocheting, cooking, cosmetics... a bunch of life skills young girls like you will need."

"What's there to lose? You need to make some friends."

"But I have (dog's name). He's my friend!"

"Honey, he's a dog."

After awhile, I gave in. I guess I do need these things. So why not?

"Okay..."

I sighed.

My father was taking me to this place where girls without a mother figure could go, and learn basic skills. There were these women that volunteered to teach us the things.

The age range was from six to sixteen, and I just so happen to be six now. The group would meet four times a week at this same building.

When we walked in, my dad went up to the front desk where an older lady was.  Another lady then came out of a room.  She was tall, her raven black hair was in a bun and she wore a long, pale rose dress.

"You must be (F/n)?  Am I correct?"

She asked, bending over.

I simply nodded, looking up at her chocolate brown eyes.

"Wonderful!  I'm Mrs. Akimoto! This is my daughter, Katsumi. Katsumi, come say hi."

A little girl came running out of the room that Mrs. Akimoto was in. Katsumi looked exactly like her mother, only shorter and had light eyes.

"Katsumi, this is (F/n)."

Mrs. Akimoto smiled.

"Hi, (F/n)!"

Katsumi smiled, which I smiled back.

From there on, Katsumi and I became best friends. Her mother was actually the founder of the organization so Katsumi tagged along to make friends with the other girls here.

There were five of us, including Katsumi.

Cassidy's the oldest girl here. She's only fourteen and she's very beautiful. Long blonde hair and green eyes. Her voice was so soft and angelic. I really looked up to her.

Her sister, Christina, is ten. She looked a bit like her sister with the same green eyes. She is nice, but she's more of a trouble maker, if you ask me.

The last girl here, is eight. Her name's Parker. She's extremely obnoxious, so her and Christina get along just fine.

In the first few weeks of this group, we worked with a partner. But today, we would be getting a "temporary mother".

Everyone was assigned to a certain woman whom Mrs. Akimoto thought would be a good match with. But my temporary mother... boy was she scary.

She looked so innocent at first, but on the inside, she's a vicious, heartless bitch.

What? I hear my brothers say worse things all the time. I don't think "bitch" is the worst thing that could come out of a six-year-old's mouth. Well, at least to me.

The bitch's name was Tamara. Sounds bitchy enough, am I right? She was short, had strawberry blonde hair cut in a long bob and looked to be in her early thirties.

I've only been coming here for a few months now, and I hate her to death! Why do I hate her so much? Well, my dad met her and now they're dating.

She would always be nasty to me whenever she came over for dinner. When we were the only two left in a room together, she would threaten me. That is until, someone would walk in and then she'd lie and play victim, acting like I was threatening her.

She got me in so much trouble, for nothing! She was the main cause, not me! How could he never see through her? Even my own brothers believed her.

Flashback End

"What's wrong with her?! Tell me!"

"Sir, calm down! Please! We're doing the best we can! If you could please-"

"Let me see her! How is she doing? Tell me what's wrong!"

"Sir-!"

"Huh... that's new."

I whispered when I woke up from my dream. I've never dreamt of something like that before. Oh well. Keeps it interesting.

I rubbed my face and tried to sit up, but felt nothing but pain.

What's this?

First, everything from my waist and down hurt like hell.  Then, I felt like I was being chocked. Visions of that same boy and girl flooded my mind.

What I saw was rather strange...?

I saw the red-head on a horse, in her Scouts' uniform. The blonde guy was also on his horse and wearing his uniform while he rode next to her.

One minute they're both here, then the next they're gone... Dead.

When the pain finally left my body, I got up and out of bed to get on with my day.

I get this sometimes. When I see someone from the other side, I feel the same physical pain they experienced before they passed.

Once I finished getting ready, I left my dorm and went to go find Jean. Not very surprising, but I found him asleep in the stables.

"Jean-boy! Get up!"

I kicked his side.

"Wha- Huh? Oh, it's just you."

He sat up, rubbing his side that I kicked.

"What're you doing out here in the stables? I mean, we're all pretty convinced that you're a horse but this is pushing it."

I chuckled.

"Oh shut your trap..."

He rolled his eyes, standing up.

I looked (up/down) at Jean, then something out of the corner of my eye caught my attention.

I glanced to my left and saw Marco standing outside of the stables, smiling.

"The Corporal made me clean the stables last night... Guess I fell asleep while doing it."

He said, snapping me back to reality while he brushed the hay off of him.

"What'd you do this time?"

"I don't have a damn clue!  I was minding my own business until he appeared out of nowhere and ordered me to clean!"

"Huh.  Well, let's go get something to eat, Jean."

I grabbed his wrist and led him back inside.

While walking down the halls, the Commander passed.

"Good morning, cadets."

He greeted.

"Morning, Commander!"

We saluted.

"At ease."

He waved our salutes off.

While he was walking away, I stood there, staring at him.

"Um... (F/n)...?"

Jean cleared his throat to get my attention.

When I came back from spacing-out, I looked back at Jean, who wore a confused look.

"S-Sorry..."

I mumbled, going back on my way to the mess hall with him.

"What was that, back there?  You just stood there and stared at the commander while he left."

"I was just in deep thought.  That's all."

Jean nodded. I knew he didn't believe the words I spoke. Whatever, though. I can't tell him the truth, anyways.

Flashback

While the commander walked away, I saw spirits around him. There were two. A man and a woman.

They must be his parents?

When Commander Smith left, the spirits left with him.

"Um... (F/n)...?"

I came out of my thoughts and looked (up/down) at him.

"S-Sorry..."

Flashback End

We finished eating so it was about time to start training.  Jean and I headed out to the training grounds and started practicing.

Squad leader Hanji was the supervisor for hand-to-hand combat and sparing.  We've gotten pretty close, I'd say.  She's a good friend and doesn't like to be thought of as a "higher up".  Instead, she wants to be treated as an equal.

Time Skip

I was currently in my dorm, brushing my wet hair since I just got out of the shower. While I stood in front of the mirror, a knock was heard at my door.

Setting the brush down, I went to go answer.

"Cadet (L/n). A letter."

Was all the tall male said.

"Oh, thanks."

I retrieved the letter from him.

After he left, I shut the door and sat on my bed, looking down at the envelope.

"(F/n) (L/n)"

Is what the back said.

When I opened the envelope, I took the letter out. It was from my brother, Tristan.

It's been awhile since I heard from him.

"Hey, (nickname)!
Haven't talked to ya in awhile, it seems. Anyway, how're you doing? I was wanting to tell you about being a Captain here in the MP. But maybe I'll save that for a day off when we get together, sometime. How's life treating you in the Survey Corps? I heard there's some cute boys in the Scouts. (Quincy told me that you told him in a letter.)  So you better make sure you find yourself a man and make Quincy and I proud.  Just make sure he isn't an asshole... Or else I might kill him.  Love ya, sis!"

~T

I rolled my eyes over what Tristan thought I told Quincy.  I never wrote to Quincy about "cute boys" here.  Their entertainment is teasing me with my love life.

I put the letter in my top dresser drawer, where I kept the miscellaneous, before returning to my desk to write a letter back to Tristan.

"What's good, T?
I'm doing good and the Survey Corps life is pretty cool.  I'm so happy I finally get to live my dream!  By the way, I never once mentioned there ever being any "cute boys" here in the Scouts, to Quincy. So I don't know what you're talking about. Besides, no one here would like me, so that's that. Oh! And how's your girlfriend...?"

~(F/n)

I smirked to myself as I sealed the letter into an envelope.

Flashback

"Katsumi! Guess what?"

"What?"

"Tristan said he's got a day off tomorrow so we have to set him and your sister up on a date!"

"Yes! Finally! I can't wait to be an aunt."

"Don't get too ahead of yourself, there."

I chuckled.

*The Next Day*

"So you didn't tell Tristan anything?"

"Nope! He's gonna be so surprised!"

"Wow... You're pretty evil."

"Thank you."

Katsumi and I were sitting on the counter in our shop, waiting for Miyuki to show up.

"Did you tell Miyuki?"

"I didn't."

"Whoa, and you call me the evil one?"

Katsumi just laughed.

Soon enough, we heard the bell above the door jingle as someone walked in.  Both of our gazes landed on the door, seeing that Miyuki had arrived.

I guess all Kat told her, was to dress up nicely because she wore a pale yellow sundress with her black hair curled beautifully.

"Now why in the walls did I have to dress up nice?"

Miyuki asked as she made her way over to the counter, where we sat.

"Because~ someone "special" has a day off today and should be here any minute to take you out on a date."

Kat smirked, hopping off the counter.

"W-What...?  Who is it?"

Miyuki furrowed her eyebrows at her sister.

"You'll see~"

I chimed.

Then the bell, once again, jingled, signaling that someone entered.

Everyone looked at the door and saw Tristan.

"T-Tristan...?"

Miyuki mumbled, ever so slightly blushing.

Katsumi and I both glanced at each other, a smirk plastered on both our faces.  This plan would without a doubt work.

Tristan came over and leaned against the counter.

"What's goin' on here?"

He asked, trying not to look at Miyuki.

"You, my good sir, will be taking my dear sister out on a date."

Kat smiled.

"A... A d-date...?"

He blushed, rubbing the back of his neck while he shifted his gaze to the floor.

"Yes.  I guess you look decent enough.  So go on.  We're sending you to the cafe by the canal."

I pushed Tristan back towards the door while Katsumi pushed Miyuki over.

"B-But-"

I slammed the door shut as soon as they were outside. I also locked it so they couldn't get back in.

We watched them from the large window up front, and Tristan sighed, giving up. The two soon left, heading towards the cafe.

"Now what do we do?"

Kat asked, looking over at me once they were out of sight.

"We, are going to be spying on them."

I smirked.

"Oh you're bad."

She grinned.

"Bad to the bone."

I replied, getting up with her.

Flashback End

And they've been dating ever since. You can thank me later, Tristan. We all knew he was too chicken to admit his feelings and ask her out. So Katsumi and I stepped in to help. Now where's our "best sisters of the year" awards?

I got up from my desk chair, envelope in hand, while I went down to my captain's office for permission to mail it.

I'm in Captain Levi's squad and that boy who Jean fights with, just so happens to be in it too.

It can be a little awkward at times. You feel me?

I brought my fist up to Captain Levi's office door and knocked twice.

"Name and business."

"Cadet (L/n). Here for permission to send a letter, sir."

"Come in."

I entered the Captain's office, shutting the door behind me. Setting down the envelope on his desk, he didn't look up from his paperwork at all.

He took out a stamp and ink pad, pressing the stamp onto the paper after applying ink to it.

"Thank you, sir."

I took the envelope back, saluting before leaving.

After I left the Captain's office, I went down to the front entrance of the Survey Corps' HQ.  There was a room by the entrance where you put letters at so someone can come get them and deliver them.

When I walked in, I saw Jean in there as well.

"Oh, hey Jean.  What are you up to?"

"O-Oh... I was just... Um..."

"Sending a letter to your mother?"

"...Yeah."

He sighed, putting it in a box on the table.

"That's nice.  I was just sending one to my brother."

I smiled, also putting my letter in the box.

"Tristan?"

"Yep."

"I'd like to meet him someday.  You know, since I was originally going to join the Military Police."

"I can make that happen."

"Really?  That'd be great!"

Flashback

"Now remember, (F/n), don't go screwing around with boys while you're serving there. I don't need you getting STD's and/or teen pregnancies."

"Dad?!"

I shouted, hiding my face from embarrassment.

"What?! I have to make sure you remember our safe-"

"Don't! Just. Shut. Up. Please."

"Then take my word and promise me."

I sighed.

"I, (F/n) (L/n), swear on my life that I will do no such things as "fooling around" with males. Or anybody. I promise that I will stay clean and, somewhat, innocent. I understand that my father will kill me and the one I screwed for such actions if I do so."

I swore an oath, holding my right hand up.

"That's a good girl. I'm proud."

He smiled, patting my back roughly.

"I just can't believe my baby girl's all grown up now..."

"Don't cry you old man."

I rolled my eyes.

"You're right..."

He sniffled.

"I have to go now, so could you let go of me?"

"S-Sorry."

He mumbled, backing away from the hug.

Then Quincy came over to say his farewells.

"Bye bitch."

"Bye asshat."

Those were our little nicknames for each other. Since Tristan was the more mature one, we never told him his nickname. We secretly call him "fucknugget" behind his back.

"Give your sister a hug, Quincy. At least pretend like you love her."

Quincy threw his arms in the air. He's not a "hugs" kind of guy. Which I understand.

We gave each other an awkward hug that only lasted about two seconds.

"Okay, now I really have to go or else I'll be late."

I put my two bags in the back of the carriage that would be taking me to the Scouts' HQ.

"All right.  I love you, (nickname).  Stay safe and be careful with expeditions.  Don't get too attached to certain people you meet because you never know when they'll be gone.  If anybody or everybody hates you for some reason, fuck them.  Not like that, remember what I just said?  And most importantly,"

I chuckled at my dad's speech.  He leaned close to my ear and whispered,

"Keep your psychic abilities at bay.  No one can know.  And I mean it.  No one.  You'll be killed immediately."

He had a stern voice.

"I know."

I sighed, stepping into the carriage.

"Bye!  Love you, guys!  Well... Quincy not so much."

I joked as he flipped me off, so I returned the gesture.

Flashback End

It was getting close to eleven at night, so I settled into bed, ready for sleep.

I was worn out.  That training with Jean was much more exhausting than before.  Is he secretly practicing and working out harder at night?  Who knows.  That just means I gotta up my game.

*3:00am*

I woke up with a jerk.

I already knew what this was.

It happens every night.

Same time.

Three in the morning...

The Devil's hour.

Now being a psychic-medium at this time, is never good.

All the demons and evil spirits lurk around and wake me up. They're always trying to harm me. But I don't let them. I do whatever it takes to keep myself alive until it's over.

That's always the hardest part.

I started to feel scratching on my legs along with tight grips on my arms.

I pinched my eyes shut, chanting the Lord's name to keep me safe.

"Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, Jesus..."

When that didn't work, I had to do it louder so all evil could hear me.

"Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, Jesus!"

I tried my best to keep my sanity.

*6:00am*

I woke up at my usual time.

I lifted the blanket off of myself to check out my new scratches I had received.

Still red and irritated looking.

Others were trying to heal from previous nights.

I then checked out my arms, seeing the bruising they had done.

I never told anybody about what happens at three in the morning.

I never even told my dad or brothers.

They already worry enough about me. So I shouldn't give them another reason.
