Prologue

For years, the planet of Imperium was always inhabited by dragons and its other natives.

But they weren't safe from humanity.

No, they weren't safe from humanity's ambitions and greed to colonize and explore the universe.

When the humans arrived on Imperium, they named the planet "Talon", after their technology (Technological Advancements in Locating Otherwordly Niches) which led them to the planet.

Upon landing, the humans nearly exterminated the dragons out of fear - that fear was rooted in what they were blindly told about them without knowing their natural side.

As a result, the dragons fled to the planet's northern half, while the humans established themselves in its south.

As generations of humans lived, breathed, and died on the planet, their DNA mutated. These mutations in the genome allowed them to perform the dragons' abilities.

No one knew why they occurred, but some thought that it was evolution at play; others believed that God was punishing them.

Nevertheless, the human race had seemingly conquered another planet (albeit there were a few stumbling blocks).

Chapter 1

It was dark inside the alleyway, and Brynn Stone didn't need to tell someone why she was there.

The cold shadows enveloped her as she snuck into the back side of the Dragon Tree, a bar and a gambler's haven.

Some said that it was the Talon version of taverns and gambling areas from books written in humanity's past, but Brynn knew that it wasn't true.

Okay, maybe it was true.

Brynn didn't know.

As she opened the wooden back door, the woman's nose left the humid, rotten cobblestone alleyway and entered a stone room full of the smells of fermenting drinks, tobacco smoke, and urine.

This was the Dragon Tree, the most popular tavern in the city.
