Unburden

Open me wide
where hearts collide
Where rivers running deep
and deeper abide

Sunlight rays
pierce far below
the surface we see
and the troubles we know

We clawed our way
past ancient wars
and open wounds
and calloused sores

From the breakers we rose
up in our faith
to work these mines
and claim new names

We work these hills
and we glean these fields
yet  the rocks and weeds
never seem to yield

We fear if we bend
we may just break
yet that's the chance
our hearts must take

Leave the blindness
of the course run dry
and embrace the unknown
of you and I

For once our forebears
had been at odds
Yet their own progeny
now till this sod

Let us break bread
and not cast blame
Let us part friends
and unburden our shame
