Chapter 7

'Did I really just think that? Do I really love Jane? It has to be, how else would you explain it?' I blinked a few times. 'I love her... I love Jane.'

"Uh, Blair? You still with me?"

I shook my self back to reality. "Uh, yeah sorry, what were you saying?"

She giggled. "I asked if you wanted to go on a date this Friday?"

"Like a date, date?" I asked nervously.

She laughed again. "Yes like a date, date. Just because this is a secret relationship doesn't mean we can't go on dates."

'True.'

"Where would we go?"

"It's a surprise, but you have to accept first."

I smiled. "How could I say no?"

"Great, I'll pick you up Friday night then. How does eight o'clock sound?"

"Sounds perfect." I replied, unable to wipe the smile from my face.

After saying our goodbyes, I hung up and laid back on my bed. My mind immediately started racing again.

   'Love... Dammit.'

Eventually I fell asleep, only to be shaken awake early the next morning.

I opened my eyes and saw Emma standing over me. "Emma? How'd you get in?" I asked groggily.

She sat on the edge of my bed. "Your mom let me in."

"Oh, ok. Well, uh, what's up?"

She gave me a small smile. "I've been doing some thinking and I wanna talk."

I nodded. "Alright, I'll get changed and meet you downstairs."

   She nodded before walking off.

After getting ready for the day, I met Emma downstairs. "So, what'd you wanna talk about?"

She opened the front door. "Let's get breakfast first."

I just nodded and followed her out the door.

After a silent car ride, we pulled into our favorite diners parking lot. We grabbed a table in the back and ordered.

After the waitress left, I turned to Emma. "Now can we talk?"

She took in a deep breath. "Look, I'm sorry for the way I acted the other day."

   I shrugged. "Apology accepted."

She gave me another small smile but didn't look at me.

   "What's wrong?" I asked.

She sighed. "I feel like a jackass. I shouldn't have tried to control your life. If Jane makes you happy then I'm happy for you."

"Thank you, but you shouldn't feel like a jackass. You were only looking out for me and I might not totally agree, but I appreciate it."

She finally met my eyes and smiled. "What're best friends for?"

I smiled back just as our food came, cutting our moment short.

Halfway through our meal, I decided to tell her about our date.

She stared at me. "You agreed to a date?"

I nodded, a little worried about what she was going to say next.

That worry immediately vanished though when a wide grin spread across her face. "The 'Blair Cohen' agreed to a date?"

I laughed a little. "Yes, I don't see why that's so hard to believe."

"Uh, because you're usually a nervous wreck when it comes to those things."

I picked at my food with my fork. "Gee, thanks for the moral support."

She laughed. "This is great, do you know where you're going?"

   I shook my head.

   "Ok, well, when is it?"

   "Friday."

"Like, this Friday?" She asked, seemingly surprised.

   "Uh, yeah?"

She jumped up. "Oh my god, why didn't you tell me sooner? We have to get you an outfit and-"

I put my hand up. "Emma, relax. It's just a date."

She looked at me, mouth hanging open. "It is not 'just a date.' This is Jane we're talking about, the woman you're clearly falling for-"

   "Wait, what? No I'm not."

   'Liar.'

She gave me a look. "C'mon, Blair, I'm not that stupid."

I sighed and looked down at my plate. "Fine... maybe a little."

"See! You have to look perfect."

"Look perfect for what?" We heard the familiar voice cut through our conversation.

We both turned and locked eyes with Lindsay.

"Uh, hey, Lindsay... we were just... um."

"Going out to dinner with some friends from school." Emma lied smoothly.

Lindsay nodded. She didn't seem to buy it, but didn't pry. "Sounds fun... uh, how're you feeling, Blair?" She asked.

I averted her gaze. 'What do I even say to her? I ran out on our date and haven't talked to her since.'

   "Good, um... how're you?"

She rubbed her arm. "I'm good... I just wanted to apologize for that night at the movies. I shouldn't have-"

"No, don't apologize. I should be the one apologizing."

   She nodded and looked down.

Sensing the awkwardness of the situation, Emma chimed in. "Anyway, we should get going. See you around, Lindsay." She said as she dropped some money on the table and pulled me out the door.

We got in her car and she turned to me. "You ok?"

I nodded. "Yeah, let's just go pick an outfit."

She smiled a little before starting the car and heading to the mall.

As we scanned the racks, I sent Jane a quick text. "How fancy should I dress for this date?"

After a few minutes, my phone buzzed. I read the text from Jane. "Not to fancy."

I smiled to myself as I sent a quick text back.

"Are you listening to me?" I heard Emma ask.

I looked up and saw her standing in front of me, two dresses in hand.

   "I'm sorry, what's up?"

She shook her head. "Which dress?"

"Oh, no dresses." I said, as I looked over the racks and pulled a nice sweater from the hanger. "This'll do."

She seemed disappointed, but put the dresses back anyway.

After picking out some pants to go with the sweater, we payed and headed home.

Emma parked in front of my house.

I got out and looked through the open door. "Thanks again. I'll let you know how it goes."

She smiled. "Alright, I'm holding you to that."

   I laughed. "Get outta here."

She returned my laugh before waving and driving off.

I watched her car turn the corner before walking into my house.

My moms sat in the living room. "Hey, honey. What do you have there?" Marry asked.

I looked down at the clothes bag. "Oh, just a new sweater and jeans."

Marry nodded and I walked past them, heading for my room.

"Sweetie?" Vanessa asked, stopping me before I could make it through the door.

I turned. "Yeah, mom?"

"We're going to the movies Friday and we were wondering if you and Emma wanted to go?" She asked.

I looked down. "Sorry, mom, I can't. I have a..." I stopped myself.

'Should I tell them I have a date? What if they want to meet her?'

They glanced at each other before looking back at me. "Do you have a date?" Marry asked with a smile.

"Uh..."

Vanessa smiled to. "You do. What's her name?"

I sighed before leaning against the wall. "... Jane"

They looked at each other again before asking more questions.

"How'd you meet her?" Marry asked.

'I couldn't tell them I met her at a bar, they'd kill me.'

"Um... at the diner."

They both nodded. "Well, is she pretty?" Vanessa asked, earning a nudge from Marry.

I smiled, picturing Janes delicate features. "Try gorgeous."

They laughed. "How old is she?" Vanessa asked.

That wiped the smile off my face. Not only was she older than me, but I honestly didn't know how much older. I mean she was married with a kid for Christ's sake.

I swallowed hard. "I'm not really sure..."

They both gave me confused glances.

I decided to answer before they had the chance to ask. "I haven't asked her."

They nodded again. "Well, that's ok." Marry said.

"Yeah, when do we get to meet her?" Vanessa added.

I started to panic slightly at the questions, deciding just to dodge them. "As much fun as this interrogation is, I need some sleep, guys."

They laughed. "Alright, we'll talk about it more tomorrow." Vanessa said.

"Goodnight, honey." Marry added.

"Night, guys." I said before hurriedly making it to my room.

I plopped down on my bed.

I bought myself a day, but I knew eventually they were gonna want to meet her and I wasn't sure how good of an idea that was...
