Chapter 4
"... Jane?"
She smiled warmly at me. "You look like you could use a ride."
I stared at her in silent awe. 'What're the odds?'
"Uhh..."
My brain told me to say no, but my heart said yes and sadly my heart won.
"Sure."
She smiled as she helped me up off the curb. I followed her into her car and then we were off.
It was quiet for a minute until she spoke up. "So... what're you doing all the way out here?"
My face flushed. 'I cant tell her I was at the movies with Lindsay, she'd hate me for sure. But, what else could I say?'
"Um..."
My mind went blank.
Then, she laughed.
I looked at her, slightly shocked. "What'd I say?"
"You didn't have to say anything... you were on a date weren't you?"
My eyes widened and my face heated up. 'How did she know?'
"Uh... of course not... I was... um..."
She let out another small laugh. 'God, her voice was beautiful...'
"Blair, it's ok..."
I gave her a quick sideways glance, but refused to say anything. I've already embarrassed myself enough tonight.
It started to grow quiet again.
"So... what happened?" She asked, cutting through the silence.
I sighed. 'I might as well tell her. She already knows.'
"Well... everything was going great... then I kissed her."
She was good at hiding it, but I could tell she was surprised.
She cleared her throat. "And..?"
I looked at my feet. "Then, I ran out on her."
Jane stopped the car and turned to me. "Why?"
I rubbed the back of my neck. 'Because it wasn't you.'
"I don't know..."
"Blair... does this have anything to do with... you know?"
I felt my whole body heat up at the thought of it. "N-no. I just didn't like her like that."
She didn't seem to buy it, but dropped the subject anyway.
Then, we were on the road again, in silence...
We were almost to my house when she stopped the car again.
I glanced at her.
"Hey... uh... you wanna grab a bite to eat?"
'Don't do it. Don't do it..! To late.'
"Uh, sure."
She gave me a small smile. "What sounds good?"
"Whatever you want, I don't mind."
"Pizza it is." She replied with a chuckle.
I smiled lightly to myself. Her smile was amazing. 'How could she get any cuter?'
We pulled into the parking lot of the pizza place before walking inside.
We each ordered a slice and headed for a table in the back.
We ate in mostly silence, stealing quick glances at each other the whole time.
After we ate, we sat back, neither one of us ready to part ways.
"So... how're things?" She asked.
"Oh, you know."
She chuckled. "Actually I don't, why don't you tell me about it?"
She rested her chin on her palm and stared at me. A small smile lit up her beautiful features. Right here, right now, she was the most beautiful thing I've ever laid eyes on.
"Wow..."
She giggled. "Excuse me?"
'Shit, did I say that out loud?'
"Um... what?"
"You just stared at me and said wow." She replied with a humorous smile.
I'm sure by now my face was beat red, at least it should've been.
"It's just... you're ..." But, I couldn't find the words.
They haven't invented words to describe her yet. 'Stunning? Gorgeous? Beautiful? How about all the above and much, much more.'
She reached her hand across the table and placed it on mine. That familiar heat ran through my body.
"Blair, you don't have to be scared to speak your mind."
I stared at her. "... But, I am."
She sat back and studied me. That heat now coursed through every vein. Every ounce of my body longed for her touch.
Her deep brown eyes flicked between my eyes and my lips. I could see something in her eyes. 'Like she wanted to kiss me... oh shut up, you're getting to far ahead of yourself.'
Before either one of us could answer, a familiar voice broke our moment.
"Blair? Where's Lindsay?" Emma asked, glancing at Jane.
I glanced between Jane and Emma. 'Why me?'
"Uh, Emma, can I talk to you for a sec?" I asked as I got up and grabbed her arm, leading her out of earshot.
"What the hell happened to Lindsay?" Emma whispered furiously.
I sighed. "I kissed her then left."
"What!"
I glanced around nervously. "Keep your voice down."
Emma shook her head. "What's Jane doing here? You didn't call her did you? Because you sai-" I put my hand over her mouth.
"Please shut up."
She rolled her eyes and let out a frustrated sigh. "Fine." She mumbled through my hand.
I took my hand away and began filling her in on what happened after I left her house.
"... and then you showed up." I finished, looking down at my feet.
She crossed her arms over her chest. "You didn't do anything with Jane?"
I shook my head.
She was quiet for a second while she pondered the information.
"I wanna meet her." She finally said.
"Uh..."
"Nope, it's happening. C'mon." She said, grabbing my hand and leading me back towards Jane.
She sat me down before pulling up a chair from the next table, sitting down and staring between the two of us.
"Uh, Jane, this is Emma. Emma, Jane." I said, motioning to them.
Emma smiled and stuck her hand out. "Nice to finally meet you."
Jane hesitantly shook it before glancing at me. "Finally?"
'God kill me now.'
I gave her a small nod.
Jane stared at me for a second before looking back at Emma with a smile. "It's nice to meet you to."
Luckily for me, Janes phone rang out from her pocket, cutting this conversation short.
She put her finger up as she answered it. "Hello?"
We could hear faint yelling from the other end.
"But-" The yelling cut her off.
She looked down. "Alright... I'll be home soon." Then, she hung up and rested her head in her hands.
Emma and I exchanged a quick glance.
Jane let out a frustrated sigh, pulling her head back up. "Sorry, guys, but I gotta go."
She stood up and we followed her out to her car.
"Blair, it was nice to see you again." She said with a smile.
I gave her a small smile in return and nodded.
Then, she turned to Emma. "It was nice meeting you."
Emma shook her hand. "Likewise."
She flashed us one more quick smile before getting in her car and driving off.
I crossed my arms and lowered my head.
"Was that her-"
I put my hand up. "Yes and I don't wanna talk about it."
She dropped the subject and placed a comforting hand on my shoulder before leading me to her car.
We got in and started heading home.
I bit my fingernail and looked out the window.
"Look... I know you don't wanna talk about it, but we're gonna have to eventually." Emma said.
I sighed. "Not necessarily."
She gave me a quick sideways glance. "Blair, you asked for my help-"
"No I didn't." I cut off.
She rolled her eyes. "Well, I'm giving it to you anyway. You want my advice?"
'No.' I thought.
"She's married, Blair. As much as you might like her, you can't keep seeing her. Eventually someone's gonna find out."
I felt a twinge of anger form in my gut. 'And what the hell would you know?'
"It's not like we're doing anything wrong."
"You slept with her!" She shouted
"Once! And she was drunk!" I yelled back.
The car fell quiet and the anger in my gut quickly changed to guilt. "... It was a mistake."
'Then why doesn't it feel like one?'
She sighed. "I'm sorry for yelling, but you're my best friend. I'm just trying to look out for you."
I lowered my head. "I know, I'm sorry to."
She gave me a small smile and patted my shoulder. "We'll figure this out, ok?"
I sighed and nodded.
The rest of the car ride was silent.
After saying goodbye to Emma, I headed inside my house, ready to put this whole night behind me.
"You're home late." Marry said.
"I know, sorry mom."
She stood up and walked over to me. "Honey, are you ok?"
I nodded, but the tears in my eyes said otherwise.
My mom pulled me into a hug. "What's wrong, honey?"
I just shook my head.
She sighed and pulled away, holding me at arms length. "Why don't you go get some rest and we can talk about it tomorrow?"
I nodded and with that, I was off to my room.
I laid in bed, staring at the ceiling. My head was spinning, there were so many questions and I didn't have the answers.
'What would happen if we got caught? Did she even want to be with me? And why did I want to be with her?' I knew it was wrong, but something about her drew me closer every time I saw her.
'And Lindsay...' She was beautiful, but for some reason, she didn't carry the same appeal as Jane. She didn't make my heart race or my whole body heat up at a single touch.
'Not like Jane...'
