Chapter 12

We drove in silence for a while, not really sure where we were going.

I looked down at my hands. 'This is all your fault.'

"Hey..." Jane said, taking a quick glance at me.

I looked up at her. "Yeah?"

She sighed. "I'm sorry I got you into that."

I looked down again. "It's ok. Honestly, I should be the one apologizing."

She took my hand in hers and gave it a gentle squeeze. "You don't have to apologize for anything. I chose to be with you, even though I was married."

I let out a low sigh. "Maybe you made the wrong choice..."

She looked over at me. "I don't think I did... you're an amazing person and I feel lucky to have you in my life. I've wanted a divorce for a long time and all you did was give me the courage to actually go through with it."

I met her gaze, a small smile forming on my lips. "Thank you."

She smiled before looking back at the road.

After a while, we ended up in front of my house.

I turned to Jane. "So... I guess I'll see you later then?"

She gave me a small smile and nod.

I leaned over to give her a quick kiss before stepping out of her car and waving her off.

My parents looked over at me as I walked into the house.

"Hey, sweetie, how was your weekend?" Marry asked.

I sighed. "It was ok."

'Yeah right.'

"Are you ok?" Vanessa asked.

I just nodded before heading to my room...

The next few weeks passed painfully slow after that. I haven't seen Jane since that day and we barley talked on the phone. She kept reassuring me everything was ok, but, deep down, I still felt guilty.

We both knew she wanted a divorce, but I don't think either of us wanted it to go down like that.

Jane spent most of the time finalizing the divorce and getting settled into her new apartment, so I didn't blame her for not talking to me much, but I really missed her.

I spent the time moping around the house, the events of that night playing over and over again in my mind. I thought of all the things I could've done differently, how I could've just avoided the whole thing all together. But, it was to late for that, what's done is done and I couldn't change it...

My phone rang out from my nightstand. I hurriedly answered it, hoping it was Jane.

"Hello?" I answered.

"Hey, it's Emma, how're you feeling?"

I slumped back into my bed. "I'm good..."

"You sure? 'Cause I haven't heard from you in weeks." She replied in an accusing tone.

I sighed. "I know and I'm sorry. How about we get some lunch?"

"Fine, I'll be there in a few."

"Alright, see you soon."

I hung up before hauling myself out of bed and getting ready for the day...

I met Emma at my front door.

   "Hey." I greeted.

"Hey... So, are you gonna tell me what's been going on?"

I looked back into my house before stepping out and closing the door. "... It's Jane."

Emma rolled her eyes. "What happened now?"

I lowered my head. "Can we eat first? I haven't eaten much in the last few days."

She looked like she wanted to protest, but nodded anyway and led me to her car...

We walked through the doors of the diner and took our usual seats, Lindsay joining us not long after.

She smiled. "What can I get for you guys?"

After placing our order, she turned and walked off.

"Alright, spill it." Emma said.

I sighed before telling her everything that happened that weekend. "... then we just drove around for a while... I feel terrible."

Emma eyed me but, refused to speak.

I lowered my head. "You're mad, huh?"

"You're damn right I am!"

I looked up, slightly shocked. "Emma-"

She put her hand up. "I'm not done yet."

I just stared at her.

She let out an angry sigh before continuing. "I told you from the start this whole thing was a mistake, but you wouldn't listen-"

"Because I love her Emma!" I interrupted.

"I don't care! You're my best friend, Blair, more like a sister and I'm only trying to look out for you. But, that doesn't help when you blow off my advice."

I folded my arms over my chest and sat back. "Maybe that's because I don't want your advice."

She stood abruptly. "Fine, then I guess you're on your own."

Before I could reply, Emma walked out of the diner and got in her car.

I slumped back in my seat as she drove off.

Lindsay walked up shortly after. "Uh, is everything ok?"

I just shook my head, a couple tears welling up in my eyes.

She sat down across from me. "Do you wanna talk about it?"

I sighed. "I... I can't."

She just nodded before lowering her head. "Well, I'll leave you alone then."

She stood up and started walking off, but I stopped her. "Lindsay, wait."

She turned to me. "Yeah?"

"I'm sorry, it's not you... this is just something between me and Emma."

Lindsay slowly sat back down. "Well, we don't have to talk about that then, but you look like you could use a friend right now."

I gave her a small smile. "Thanks."

She nodded and then we just started talking. We talked about movies and music and what our favorite time of day was. It was all just nonsense, but I realized this is exactly what I needed. Everything in my life for the past couple months has been so serious and full of secrets. It was nice just to have a meaningless, fun conversation.

At around closing, Lindsay led me into the parking lot.

"Sorry for keeping you from work." I started.

She shrugged. "Eh, it's alright. Sunday's aren't usually that busy anyway."

I smiled. "Ok."

She looked around the nearly empty parking lot. "You need a ride?"

I nodded as I looked around. "Yeah, thanks."

We walked to her car and got in before heading off to my house, arriving shortly after.

I looked down. "Hey... thanks for today, I really needed that."

She smiled. "No problem, I really like talking to you."

I returned her smile. "Me to."

Then, I stepped out of her car, but before I could close the door, she called out. "Hey, Blair?"

I looked back at her. "Yeah?"

She nervously picked at her fingernails. "Are you free tomorrow?"

I nodded. "I think so, why?"

She shrugged. "Well, I was gonna go check out this cool arcade that just opened and I was wondering if you wanted to come with me?"

I smiled. "Sure, I'd like that."

She smiled back. "Ok, cool, I'll see you tomorrow then?"

   "You bet."

She waved goodbye before driving off.

I watched her drive down my street, feeling excited for tomorrow...
