Chapter Seven

"Shh.. It's- it's okay." The cat whispered, nuzzling her ear. "I know you've been through a lot. I'm sorry, my kin." Moon's eyes glinted with pity and she stepped away. "Your mother would have been so proud to have such a brave daughter."

Osprey opened one eye. "Moon..? I'm your kin?" She let her head fall back exhaustedly.

-

Osprey's eyes fluttered open to see the unadorned walls of the medicine cave. She tried to shift positions, but pain shot through her wings and into her back. She yowled in pain.

Goffin poked his head through the lichen-draped entrance of the medicine den. "It seems you visit here quite often." He joked.

Osprey didn't answer, all the events of the past day suddenly flooding back to her. She curled back into her best.

"Osprey..?" Goffin whispered, stepping forward.

Osprey shook her head. "It was all my fault. I attacked Alaska and ran away.. Like a coward. I should've died, not him!"

Goffin rested his tail on her shoulder. "Osprey, I'm sure he was quite aware that he was risking his life for you. He loved you, and wanted you to live."

Osprey sighed. "But I will still miss him so much.." Osprey winced.

Goffin nodded understandingly. "I know how it feels. It will be a while.
But for now, let's talk about physical pain. How are your wings feeling?"

Osprey tried to unfold a wing and squeaked in pain. "Not so well."

Goffin looked into camp, then back into the medicine den. "But you're going to have to pull through. Crimson is calling a meeting and wants you there."

Worry shone in his eyes as she hoisted herself out of the moss nest and into the camp. Her wings dragged painfully behind her, broken and bloody. She winced and limped into camp. All the cats watched as she dragged herself onto the edge of camp and looked up at her father.

Raw grief showed clearly in his dull yellow eyes. "We all mourn the loss of my son and your groupmate, Kestrel. He was a very strong and brave cat. He gave his life for a traitor."

Osprey didn't have enough energy to fire an insult back. She just stared at the base of the ledge. Macaw rested his tail on her shoulder comfortingly.

"Which is why I have decided something. Osprey, step forward."

Osprey slowly stood and dragged herself into the clearing. Now her broken wings and patched fur were on display for the whole group. Many gasped. Osprey blinked.

"Osprey, you are hereby banned from my group. You have attacked your future leader, abondoned your group, and caused unnecessary argument and death."

Gasps erupted from the crowd and Osprey's shoulders drooped. She painfully shuffled towards the entrance and looked down. She couldn't fly. She would have to climb the wall.

"You can't do that! She'll die!" Macaw yelped.

"It wasn't her fault Kestrel died!" Dove hissed, stepping forward.

"She's one of the best cats among us!" She heard the faint mew of Wren.

She heard many voices calling out and looked behind her. Dove and Macaw began helping her limp back into camp among her groupmates.

Flicker stepped forward. "Wouldn't it be a waste if we sent her out to die when Kestrel gave his life for her? Wouldn't Kestrel's death be in vain then?"

Many nods of approval and murmurs rippled through the group. Crimson looked around in horror at the cats uniting against him. Then, he absently nodded his head and whipped around to pad back into his den. Alaska quickly followed him.

Wren, Finch, and Flicker helped her into a nest and kept her company. They all sat around her and they talked for quite a while.

-

A screech was heard coming from Crimson's den. Every cat's ears perked up and they turned toward the noise. Alaska came skidding into camp. "Crimson.. Crimson is dead!" She cried, shaking.

Osprey leapt up, ignoring the pain in her wings. She quickly limped into the stone den to see her father's still body on the ground. "Father!" She screeched, rushing forward.

Alaska shoved her out of the way. "He was my father. You're a traitor." She hissed.

Osprey growled. "I hate you. I hate you so much. All you think about is leadership and power!"

Alaska froze, and something flashed in her eyes. Osprey shoved her out of the way and picked up her father by the scruff, dragging him into the camp. Cats meowed in disdain and sadness, and came forward to mourn him. She layed him beside Kestrel's body.

First, it was mother. Then Raven. Then Kestrel. And now Crimson. Why was she losing all the cats she cared about?

Every cat slunk forward and mourned the two lost cats. Suddenly, Macaw stepped forward. "What about a new leader?"

Alaska's looked toward Macaw. "Me, of course!" She hissed, looking around at the other cats.

Now that Crimson was gone, the cats felt they had more freedom. They could speak they're minds. Dove stepped forward.

"I think we should vote."

Yowls of agreement sounded at this and Alaska shook her head. "No! No! I'm the leader, you fools!"

But no one listened. Macaw had stepped towards the front of the group. "I vote Osprey!"

Osprey's eyes widened. No. No, not again. But.. Now nothing can hold me back. I can fulfill the prophecy. She raised her head shakily.

"I accept."

Many cats yowled agreement. Osprey had three more votes than Alaska in the end.

It was decided.

Osprey was to be leader.
