A Passing Conversation
Frisk looked up slowly making sure the rosy-cheeked child was gone, before letting herself collapse into uncontrolled sobs, hearing Papyrus is the background still trying to console Sans, but seeming to have no luck.
A few minutes passed, and Frisk seemed to have gotten control of herself, as she headed downstairs, and scurried into the bathroom. She ran to the sink, turning on the water quickly, and mercilessly began scrubbing at the make-up. She scrubbed, and scrubbed until it made her body sting, tears still pouring down her face as she heard every wail and scream for help from every monster she knew and loved, the most painful being the ones of those who she considered family. The brothers, her mother, Undyne, Mettaton, Asgore; even people she didn't encounter like Alphys, the thought of them suffering still left a burning ache in her heart.
After what seemed like hours of scrubbing, the makeup was finally gone, and she had cried all of the tears she could, even though the heaviness on her soul was still unbearable. She slowly left the bathroom, dragged herself upstairs, and went into her own room. She quickly wriggled out of the disgusting memory, and popped on her normal sweater, and putting on a simple pair of leggings. She then glanced over at her dad's walking stick, and made a silent promise, I won't fail my new family like how I failed you and mom.
She then quickly slipped on her blue bunny slippers, before shuffling down the hall, all the way to Sans' door.
She leaned against the door, eavesdropping to see if it was okay to enter.
"i'm sorry, i'm sorry, i'm sorry." Was repeated over, and over again like a broken record player, in a meek, quiet voice, that sounded like it was still out of breath.
"It wasn't your fault, please stop saying sorry...." The voice sounded like it was on the edge of breaking down.
Then there was silence...
She rested her head on door, for about five minutes, a pained grimace on her face. God, what had she done...
Soon, a voice broke through again.
"i...i...i'm fine now."
" Don't lie to me Sa-"
" i said. I. am. Fine."
"....."
"s-sorry....i...i don't know why that happened..."
"Why what happened?"
"the fuc-- the stupid flip out i had.... i thought i was over those..."
" I did too, brother....the last time you had them was when mom....."
"yeah....i.....i know...."
"..."
"hey...paps..."
" Hm?"
" you think....the kid is...."
"Sans, I'm sure they'll get it, and I'm sure that they aren't mad nor injured."
"that's what you said last time..."
" Sans, the human is not like them, they actually do care and aren't gonna act different because o--"
" how do you know?"
" I just...do..."
"...."
" Sans....please, believe in Frisk for once, they actually do care about us."
"never said i did'in."
" I guess you have not said that....."
"...."
"...."
" dammit, why did i have to...ugh...."
"Sans, stop being hard on yourself, it's not like you meant it."
"....i know.."
" Then stop behaving like you do not."
"..."
"..."
"....ok...can we....keep this between the two of us...?"
" Three."
".....three....of us...?"
"If that's what you think is best brother."
"yea...."
"Then we shall."
There was once again silence.
Frisk felt a lump in her throat, that refused to go down. She took a deep breath, and knocked at the door, pretending she had heard nothing. She heard shuffling around the room, before Sans opened the door. He didn't look too great at all, his eye-lights looked dim from the over work of magic, the bags under his eyes were cutting deeper than usual, and she could still see a slight shake to his hands.
"hey, kiddo." He said, trying to give the young human a smile, but it looked too strained to be anywhere near real, "i, uh, geez, i....just, come in....." He said, opening the door.
Frisk bit her lip, and quickly shuffled into his room, plopping onto his floor, seeing Papyrus already sitting on the bed with a sad grimace. Sans followed behind, sitting on the edge of his bed with his legs criss-crossed. She peered up at the clock. It seemed that about thirty minutes had past.
No one spoke up. No one knew exactly what to say, or what the other people in the room were exactly feeling. Instead, a void of silence seemed to take over the three, all of them mauling over thoughts in their heads.
Sans suddenly spoke up, "i'm so sorry." The words fell from his mouth so quickly, Frisk was only half sure that they had been said at all.
Papyrus looked to his brother, like he wanted to interject, but then seemed to quickly decide against it.
Frisk licked her chapped lips, as she looked towards the ground, calmly signing back, "(Sans, I'm okay, and it's fine, you didn't do anything wrong.)"
"kid, me throwing you into wall from a prank, is not okay. " He said, some-sort of finality in his words.
"(But you didn't mean to, and I'm not hurt, so it's okay.)" Frisk threw this thought back at him, despite it sounding repetitive.
Sans looked back at them, his eyes going blank, "...and if you were."
Frisk gave him a questioning look, not understanding what he was saying.
".... if you were hurt.... then what?" There was a slight waver in his voice, which didn't belong in his usual confident tone.
Her brows furrowed slightly, and she looked him right in the eye, "(If I did get hurt, I would still forgive you)." She paused, thinking if this was a good time to bring in the other thing. She decided to go for it, "(And I hope you will find the heart to do the same for what I have done to you.)"
Sans looked bewildered, "kid, what? You did'in do nothing to me. a prank like that doesn't deserve an apo--"
She suddenly spoke up, taking both the brothers off guard, "You know that's not what I'm talking about."
Sans' eyes shrunk slightly, while Papyrus remained in silent confusion.
".....i...." Sans put his finger up, as if he were protesting something, just to lose his train of thought, putting his hand back down.
Frisk slowly stood up, her face completely emotionless, she walked over to Sans, her pace slower than usually. She stopped, standing in front of him, her eyes completely void of any sentiment.
She watched his eyes immediately dart from hers, and could tell it was all he could do not to move out of the way. Papyrus just watched on remaining silent, his curiosity peaking.
"Look me in the eye." She said, her voice just at a loud whisper, yet she kept it completely monotone.
"..." His eyes flickered to her general direction, just for them to look away again.
"Sans." She said, still monotone.
He squeezed his eyelids shut for a second, before reopening them and bringing his attention to the child, connecting with her eyes this time, "...yes?"
"Are you scared of me?" She said, holding the eye contact.
There were a few moments of silence, before Sans bursted into laughter.
"kid, what?!" He laughed, "why would i ever be scared of--"
She quickly cut him off, her voice rising slightly so she would be heard, "You aren't looking at me." She pointed out to him, causing his laughter to cease.
He looked her in the eye again, "kid, i'm not gettin' where you're going with this."
"Are you scared of me?" She repeated the question.
He stared at her, seeming to be refusing to answer her question.
"Are you scared of me?" She persisted.
He closed his eyes, "kid--"
She harshly grabbed his shoulders, "Sans!" She shouted, causing Papyrus to jump, and Sans to freeze, biting his tongue to keep himself from speaking. Neither one of them had ever heard the child raise their voice at anyone, it was already rare enough for the child to use their voice. "Sans, please, just tell me...Are you scared of me?" Her grip on his shoulders softened.
He held contact with her, "...i..." his voice stopped. But the child refused to let go. "... i-i..." he stammered, struggling to keep contact. "...i-" his voice fell short, just leaving him with an agape mouth but no syllables leaving it.
He hadn't even reached the realization that his own eyes were misting over, before the child's straight face, turned sullen, releasing their grip on his arm, bringing their hand to their mouth shaking their head in disbelief.
" oH mY gOd..." They said shakily, "yOu aRe..."
Before Sans could say anymore, the child threw themselves at him, hugging tightly around his neck, "I-i'm so s-sorry," they said through a sob.
His body was rigid at first, but he relaxed quickly enough, slowly wrapping his arms around the slightly smaller form.
Papyrus didn't know what to do with himself, so he continued to just sit on the bed, unsure of where to go and too utterly confused to make a comment.
Frisk's sobs died down, turning the hug into some sort of silent apology between the two beings.
"so, you remember? " Sans quietly whispered to the child, tenderness clear in how the words came from him.
"Mhmm" She said, nodding her head slightly as well, still hiccuping from her sobs.
"how...how long?" He whispered quietly again, a slight worry also sneaking it's way in.
"R-right after I ran out i-into the hall." Her voice was still shaky, as she skimmed over the Chara encounter.
Sans went silent again. He gave the child one last squeeze, before pulling away, to be greeted with the blotchy, red-faced girl, with streaks of tears still visible on her face.
Sans brushed their hair from their face, two green and blue eyes becoming visible, both misted and red from crying, "kid, i've gotta know...."
She anticipated the question, already half knowing what it was going to be.
His eye-lights seemed to enlarge.
"...was that you in judgement hall?"
