Venus stood outside in the pitch black. She was dressed in complete black from head to toe, to blend in with the night.
All around it was silent. Venus stood staring at the small house in front of her. This job was a bit different from her previous jobs. The Boss had only provided her with an address and ordered her to handle The Target as quickly as possible. Unlike usual, there was no picture of The Target, but she was informed that The Target lived alone.
Venus now moved, her feet rubbing against the grass softly. She crouched by the house, looking inwards. The curtains were drawn, but there was a gap. Venus couldn't really see anything through the gap, but only made out darkness within, signifying that the lights inside were off.
As silently as she could manage, Venus struck the glass, breaking it. She stayed in her crouched position for some time, just listening.
Nothing. It appeared The Target had not heard the glass breaking.
With one final glance around her, Venus crawled in through the hole in the window she had created. Her small frame allowed her to pass through easily and before long she was standing in what appeared to be a kitchen.
Venus squinted, quickly taking in her environment in the darkness. Taking a tentative step forward, Venus bumped into something resulting in a loud crashing sound. She instantly got down on the floor when she saw a light go on upstairs and the sound of approaching footsteps.
"Clarence, is that you?"
It was a woman's voice. But who was Clarence? Venus had been told that The Target will be home alone. Venus began racking her brain desperately as a panic overtook her. Was someone else in the house? Had someone seen her?
Not too far away from where Venus laid, there was a quiet 'meow'. Turning her head sharply, she came face to face with a cat. It had a pale grey fur coat and was looking at her with startling green eyes. It appeared to be a century old. It didn't take long for her to realize that was Clarence.
Moving on all fours, Venus crawled around the room till she was out of view of the cat. She let out a low breath of relief but was still on high alert. The footsteps were getting close.
"Clarence, what did you do?" Venus now heard the same voice from before ask.
The owner of the voice was currently in the same room as her, but Venus couldn't make out any of her features. She was hiding behind a chair to conceal her presence and was spying on the woman through the small gap under the chair, only seeing her downwards from her ankle.
The woman's hands came into view as she picked up several dishes from the floor. Venus realized that had been what she knocked over. She listened to the woman place them in their rightful positions before her hands came into view again. This time, the woman picked up the cat from the floor, opened the front door to let it outside.
The cat's 'meows' of protests were loud. They seemed to be an attempt at warning its owner, to alert her of Venus' presence. But the woman remained oblivious as she locked the door and silently began making her way back upstairs, her feet making soft sounds against the carpeting.
No doubt, she was Venus' Target.
Venus remained fixed in her position as she watched the lights go off. She waited another ten minutes before she got to her feet, walking in the direction that the woman had come from. The carpeted floor completely concealed her footsteps as she began to climb the stairs. As she did so, Venus reached into her waistband, retrieving her gun.
She had the silencer on so as not to alert the neighbors when she made the kill. This would be a quick job. Venus would go into the woman's room, make the hit, and be out in less than a minute. Her body probably wouldn't be discovered until a couple days later. Seeing as the woman lived alone, it might even take a whole week. Maybe the mail-man would be the first to notice the decaying smell coming from the house, or maybe it'd be the neighbors.
As all these thoughts ran through Venus' mind she arrived at the top of the stairs.
It was dark, and there were two doors in front of Venus. One was ajar, she looked into it and realized it was a bathroom, that only left one door.
Venus took a deep breath as she realized what it was she was about to do. She was about to kill again. It was obvious to Venus that something about her had changed; she didn't know what it was, all she knew was that she no longer took pleasure from taking people's lives. She knew she now felt guilt. But there was nothing she could do about it.
This was her life.
It's either her or me, Venus thought to herself gloomily. It's either her or me.
Drawing a quick breath, Venus kicked the bedroom door open, her arms extended with the gun pointed ahead of her. She felt against the wall, immediately finding the light switch. As the room lights flooded on Venus could clearly see the woman that was lying on the bed, an expression of shock and intense fear spread across her face.
"Move, or make the slightest sound and I will blow your brains out." Venus deadpanned.
The woman on the bed shook furiously. She had her arms raised above her head, staring at the gun aimed right at her. She appeared to be in her late forties and was dressed in a baby blue nightdress. No doubt, she had imagined she would go to bed that night like she usually did. She probably had no idea that it would be her last night ever.
There was something about the woman that drew Venus in, but she didn't know what it was.
Venus now approached the woman, the gun still aimed at her. She didn't know why she was walking closer, she could shoot and kill the woman clean out from where she was previously standing at the door. Yet Venus approached her. The woman visibly trembled as she drew closer.
Once upon a time, seeing this reaction out of people made Venus happy. But not anymore. Venus swallowed back the bitter taste in her mouth.
"Please, don't do this." The woman begged, her voice shaking furiously. "Please, I s-saved you that time, please-"
Venus paused then and cocked her head to the side in confusion. Then it clicked as she instantly recognized who the woman was. She was the Doctor that had stitched her up after the incident that had almost taken her life about five years ago.
Here Venus was, about to kill a woman that not only saved lives, but saved her life.
This was a whole new type of fucked up. This was why The Boss hadn't shown her an image of The Target in case she recognized the woman beforehand. The Boss had intentionally sent her to kill the Doctor that had saved her. It was a cruel, dark thing to do.
Venus hesitated, she still had the gun aimed right at the woman, but her hands shook slightly.
"Please, don't do this."
Venus was used to The Target's pleas before she killed them. She had hardened her heart to become immune against these cries, but it was different this time. Each cry, each look into the woman's terrified eyes sent jolts of pain through Venus.
"Shut up!" Venus snapped at the woman as her hands shook pathetically. "Just shut up."
The woman instantly kept quiet. She wasn't going to ignore orders from someone that had a gun aimed to her head.
Venus swallowed hard as she tried to decide what to do. No doubt about it, she had to kill the woman. That wasn't even a question. The Boss had ordered a hit for the woman, so that was what it had to be.
A new wave of assurance crossed over Venus as she steadied her arm, aimed at the woman. Maybe she could close her eyes and shoot. She knew she wouldn't miss; her aim was that good. Venus closed her eyes briefly, but it made no difference; she could still see the woman's terrified blue eyes looking at hers. She opened them once again.
The woman was still shaking furiously on the bed, tears were now coming out of her eyes. But they were silent. Venus knew that the woman dared not make a sound after her warnings. Instead, she had her last moments in silence. She watched the woman, arms raised above her head, tears freely flowing, shaking helplessly.
Venus knew The Boss wanted the woman dead. But she knew she couldn't do it. She couldn't complete the job. Not anymore.
Venus let her arm fall limply to her side. The woman watched her in shock, tears still streaming from her eyes not understanding what was happening. She had already accepted the fact that she was going to die.
"Listen," Venus now said, her voice was grave, "You need to leave. Leave the city and get as far from here as you can, if you can leave the Country, even better. For some reason, Richard Mascetti wants you dead. He will continue to come after you till you're dead."
Venus paused and swallowed hard as she watched the woman whose eyes looked like they were due to pop out of her head at any moment.
"You need to get far away, leave and never come back."
The woman nodded her head feverishly. No words came out of her mouth, she was too panic-stricken to form any.
Venus was already walking out of the room, not bothering to look back. She went down the stairs. Not even bothering with the front door, Venus left through the broken window she had come through.
She was feeling so many things, thinking so many things. But the thought that dominated above them was the fact she had just disobeyed an order from The Boss. She had just disobeyed an order from Richard Mascetti.
