The sound of gunshots rang loudly. They came in succession and seemed to get closer each time.
Venus immediately knew what that meant. It was time to move.
She was concealed behind a wall in an office complex. This was where The Target worked, she had been ordered to take him down.
Venus knew that the cameras at the complex had all been taken care of by the hackers that worked for The Boss. All she had to do was take down The Target, preferably without getting caught.
Without a second to spare, Venus leaped out from behind the wall she was hiding, extending her left arm and firing gunshots in the direction she had heard the previous gunshots, she now climbed the spiral staircase, taking them two at a time.
Venus was used to doing this. She had been an Assassin for a good proportion of her life. She knew nothing else as well as she knew how to use a gun, aiming straight for the space between their eyes, or how to throw a knife at just the right angle to hit the internal jugular vein in a person's throat, resulting in their instant death.
Venus now stood in front of the large brown door, she knew that The Target was behind it. Taking a deep breath, she kicked the door open, her gun aimed in front of her as she entered the room.
Venus automatically scanned her eyes through the room, taking into account the scenery before her. It was a large, plain white office. Filled with bookshelves and expensive-looking furniture.
"I beat you to it."
Venus' head flipped to the side as she laid eyes on none other than Bruce. Bruce was another assassin that worked for The Boss, he was a muscular man with tattoos running all over him. He had a scar that ran directly through his eyes, Venus had often wondered if he had done that to himself. After all, he was such a cliché.
Venus hated joint missions, she was more of a lone wolf. But most of all, Venus hated Bruce. If she could, she'd kill him, but she knew that would put her into a lot of trouble with The Boss.
Bruce now stood, holding The Target in a chokehold grasp. Around him lay dead bodies which Venus assumed were the men supposed to be guarding The Target.
Venus found herself growing irritated at the fact that they had done such a shitty job. She liked a bit of a challenge in her missions, something to put her on edge, to fill her with excitement.
The Target struggled to break free of Bruce's grip, but it was no use. Bruce's muscular arms would not give any leeway. He smirked at Venus with a look of great satisfaction spread across his face.
"Bruce." Venus sighed, rolling her eyes. "Why do you always insist on playing with The Targets? You shouldn't play with your food like that, it's very unsanitary."
"I thought I'd keep him alive till you arrived, just so you could watch me kill him. I want you to know that I've bested you in this as well."
Venus rolled her eyes once again. She could hear the commotion from a little distance away slowly getting louder. There were the sounds of gunshots and shouts which seemed to increase by the second. But here Bruce was, being petty.
Another reason Venus hated him. He was a sore-loser; he was blinded by his masculine ego and couldn't just accept the fact that Venus was a better Assassin than he was.
"Bruce," Venus now said, casually walking across the room and taking a seat in a black leather chair, it was covered with blood but Venus ignored it. "The only reason you got here before me is because you caused such a commotion and I had to clean up after your mess. What happened to the original plan of a silent and quick entry and exit?"
"That plan sucked." Bruce replied.
Venus glared at him in disgust. Bruce really was just a muscle-man, and that was it. He was big and strong so made a fairly good Assassin, but besides that, his brain was empty. Pathetic. He had no strategy-planning whatsoever and couldn't see past his personal emotions, even when it came to business.
"Remind me to tell The Boss never to assign me with you." Venus murmured, still sending glares at Bruce.
"Just admit it. I'm a better Assassin than you." Bruce now snarled at her.
Venus smiled at him but her smile didn't reach her eyes. Instead, she trailed her eyes down to the man struggling to breathe in his hold. That was The Target. He was a short man, dressed in a suit, a businessman, Venus couldn't remember his name as she stared at him. She believed there was no point in learning the names of Targets, she just learnt whatever information she needed and got it over with.
"Please, don't kill me." The Target now begged, gasping for air, "I'd pay you whatever you want."
His pleas were futile, there was no way that either Bruce or Venus could leave there with The Target still alive. That would mean death for them, that was the punishment for anyone that disobeyed The Boss.
"You're going to die a slow and painful death." Bruce snarled into the ear of The Target.
Venus raised her eyebrow slightly as she watched him, she couldn't understand why Bruce was so obsessed with the dramatics.
In one swift motion, Venus raised her arm up and shot The Target. Clean, straight to the head. Her aim was impeccable and within seconds The Target was dead.
"V!" Bruce yelled as the man fell slumped to the ground. "He was for me to kill! And I was holding him, what if you shot me!"
"You were wasting too much time," Venus replied now standing up from her seat and strolling across the room. "And trust me. If I wanted to shoot you, I'd have shot you."
Bruce glared at Venus as she walked casually across the room. His blood was running hot, more than anything, he wanted to strangle the cocky bitch in his hands. He wanted to slowly watch her die, begging for help in his arms, he wanted her to ultimately admit that he was a better Assassin than she was. He wanted to put her in her place. But even he wasn't stupid enough to go after Venus, he knew what she meant to The Boss. It would be instant death for him.
Venus smirked as she made her way towards the door. She could feel the anger radiating off Bruce, and it brought her much pleasure.
"The Police will be up here in seconds, I recommend getting the hell out of here." Venus stated as a parting word to Bruce before leaving the room.
She didn't really care what happened to him. He could die for all she cared, it'd be better for her even. One less muscle-brain for her to deal with.
The second Venus stepped out of the room, the commotion increased. There were more sounds of screams and yells from a few levels below her.
Venus stuffed her gun into the back of her trousers, concealing it completely from view. Despite the chaos, she walked calmly, tying her dark locs up above her head. She knew how she would get out of this unscathed, Bruce on the other hand, would probably have a more tough time doing so. It served him right; he was the one that had started this whole commotion in the first place.
"Officer," Venus said, causing her voice to tremble as she ran up to a Police Officer that had appeared around the corner. He had his gun aimed out before him but instantly relaxed once he saw Venus, his stance changing to a protective one.
"T-There was a man, shooting, I managed to get away," Venus made sure to add in the stutter for extra effect as she clutched unto the Officer's arm. "P-please g-get me out of here."
Dressing for the role was an important aspect for Venus. She was dressed in a cheap skirt suit so it appeared like she was nothing more than an employee that had somehow gotten mixed up in all this.
More Officers had now appeared around the corner and the Police shouted instructions to one of them to lead Venus to safety, Venus ducked her head slightly to conceal the smirk that had formed on her face.
One of the benefits of being a woman in her line of work: nobody ever suspected her. It also helped that Venus was small built, she had a slim frame and soft features. She looked helpless at best.
"Ma'am, which way did the shooter go?" The Officer asked.
Venus turned around and pointed in the opposite direction from where she knew Bruce was. She hated his guts, but she wasn't going to sell him out. That was way below her, unlike him, she didn't mix personal feelings with work. That was below her.
The Officers now began rallying up, heading in the direction that Venus had pointed out whilst she was escorted away by another Officer.
