soulmate!au

~

in which one sees the world in black and white until the moment they look into their soulmate's eyes.

soulmate is not necessarily a romantic interest for everyone.

hinata let out frustrated grumble while his eyes were locked on the screen of the tv - he was watching a movie with natsu. she went on and on about how beautiful the colours in it were; the beautiful sunset, a swirl of blue, orange and red for his little sister, a pool of different tones of grey for him; the teary eyes of the protagonist as the obligatory break up scene followed, an intense dark brown for his sister, a dull black circle to him. hinata gritted his teeth and hurriedly got up. natsu's mouth formed a little o and she looked at the furious expression on her brother's face. he tried his best to smile at her. "i'm just going to the bathroom. i'll be right back."

hinata locked the door after he entered and, with his back against the wall, slid down to the ground. his fists clenched as his face contorted in envy. oh, how he envied the people around him. it was all so unfair to him. how could natsu have found her soulmate already? at the age of 5, at that. and here he was, hoping to finally find the one person that would bring him the colours seemingly everyone else could see. with every new person he encountered his hopes were up high, just to be shattered a second later when he realised that everything was still the same old black, white and grey. it was aggravating when he had found himself on the same team with kageyama and even more so when they started getting along, developing a friendship, because it meant that despite the fact that he trusted kageyama - the black haired boy was not his soulmate. and that was the day he lost hope to ever find his soulmate.

hinata shouyou had given up on ever finding the person that - as a soulmate should, whether it be a platonic or romantic relationship - would stick with him until his life would end.

the thought of never finding his fated 'other half', as his mother called it, brought him to tears. he didn't want to end up alone. remembering that natsu was waiting for him in the living room, he wiped his eyes with the back of his hand and got back up. he risked a quick glance into the mirror. his eyes were puffier than he would have thought. hinata turned on the tap, formed a small bowl with his hands and splashed his face with water before drying his face with a towel and returning to the couch. he slumped back down next to natsu and she turned around with an excited smile. "nii-chan, you missed the wedding. it was so beautiful." hinata forced his lips into an equally excited grin. "sorry, i wish i could have seen it."

a practice game against seijoh, no big deal, hinata thought as he biked home after practice the next day. they're only a top four team, he tried to brush it off. and it's my first real match, he started panicking slightly, the pace of his legs getting faster. he passed another pitch-black line of trees and then took the sharp turn at the summit of the mountains. he only realised how much he had sped up when he almost crashed into a tree at the next turn. he yanked the handlebars of his bike around just in time and barely managed to keep himself upright. hinata brushed one of his hands through his hair and sighed. he definitely was way too nervous about the match. he hoped that everything would turn out okay in the end.

after the vomiting accident on the bus ride to aoba johsai and the mistakes of the first set hinata felt strangely calm. the image of angry kageyama remained in the back of his head, reminding him that there was nothing that could be scarier. a shiver ran down his spine when he thought back to it. definitely nothing scarier. the match went on and karasuno did surprisingly well in the second set. hinata felt confidence flood his veins. before he knew it, the second set was over, too. he was sure that they would win the next set as well. that is, until the grand king - oikawa - was switched in as the pinch server. it was karasuno's match point and aoba johsai had almost caught up - thanks to oikawa's serves. there was only one choice. the freak quick.

hinata jumped, his eyes fixated on the other side of the net. the ball met the palm of his hand perfectly. and in that moment hinata's eyes met oikawa's. and suddenly - slowly - the black and white was replaced by colours, starting with oikawa's brown irises. hinata's feet touched the ground again, and as if he was in a daze he continued to stare at the other side of the net. he could see colours - for the first time in his life. and now he understood why natsu was so excited all the time. the bright green and turquoise of oikawa's shirt and jersey almost stung in his eyes. the brunet stared back at him, equally bewildered. hinata looked down. red and white. there were colours everywhere. and then he noticed - oikawa was his soulmate. oikawa. was. his. soulmate. the grand king - the guy who kageyama had described as a person with a horrible personality - was his other half. the person that would stick with him until his life would end. and he didn't know if he should be happy about that.

"i guess it's me and you, shrimpy, huh?", oikawa raised an eyebrow at hinata, everyone else already trailing towards the exit of the gym. he tried hard to contain his emotions, to play it cool in front of the shorter boy. hinata backed away slightly, gulping. shit, he's cute, oikawa was ready to glomp the boy right then and there. "no need to be shy. after all we're destined for each other, shrimpy." he grinned at hinata. "now we just have to find out in what way." hinata nodded slightly and smiled half-heartedly at the setter. "uh, yeah. i guess we have to?", his voice hitched a bit, the last part almost sounding like a squeak - making his statement sound like a question. he let out an exasperated giggle and turned away a bit, hoping to escape oikawa's intense stare. "would you mind calling me hinata?", he mumbled. oikawa leaned down, his face now mere inches from hinata's. "what did you say, shrimpy?", he laughed. "i just asked you to call me hi-. oh." hinata felt like punching himself in the face for letting oikawa tease him. "i might think about it. if you go out on a date with me next monday, shrimpy."
