Stone and Mortar

After De Toren van Babel by Pieter Bruegel the Elder

The greatest tower

Meant to reach a transcendent paradise

Humanity together

To reach their God

Clouds circle the growing structure

As it increases in height and girth

Ships sail in and out of the harbor

Bringing stone and mortar

The sun rises

Rays tinting the bricks a soft orange

The broken tower

Farther from paradise than ever before

Humanity divided

Wondering how they angered their god

Clouds pass over the remnants

As the bricks crumble and disintegrate

Ships stay far from the harbor

That marks the grave of stone and mortar

The sun sets

But the rays don't fall on the Tower of Babel
