Changbin never thought of himself as a parent.
He never planned on being one so young. But, sometimes things happen in a way you never expect.
It was around 10pm on a Sunday night, and he was standing on the front porch of his home.
The home was shared by six other people, including the boy he now has legal guardianship over.
A two-year old named Seungmin.
Said little boy, was let out onto the front porch by his favorite uncle, Jeongin.
"Changbin, tiny man is looking for you."
Changbin let go of his solemn expression and replaced it with a smile as he picked up Seungmin.
"Hey cutie pie! Looking adorable in your little pajamas."
"Hehehe~ thanks!", the small boy said.
"Speaking of pajamas. Why are you not sleeping?"
"No sleep!"
"No sleep? Are you not tired or just can't sleep?"
Seungmin held up one finger, signifying he was choosing the first choice.
"You're just like him, you know? I know you're tired and here you are saying you're not."
Seungmin smiled, poking Changbin in the cheek.
"Eh, don't do that. You're lucky you're cute."
"Aw! Want poke."
Changbin thought it was funny, and let the kid poke him one more time.
They sat down on the porch swing together.
"You know Seungmin, this swing is a very important place."
The boy turned around and looked up at Changbin with his bright and pretty eyes.
For a second, Changbin saw a familiar gaze in them.
"I know you're wondering why. So let me tell you a story."
-----------------------------------------------------------
(Three Weeks Ago)
Felix, Changbin, Chan, and Jeongin had all decided on being the planning committee for Seungmin's upcoming third birthday taking place in two months.
"Why are we planning so early though?", Jeongin asked.
"I don't play about my baby.", Chan said, "Now. I vote three bouncy houses. One for each year old he will be."
"But the last time we got a bouncy house I got stuck and it deflated and now I'm claustrophobic.", Felix stated.
"Then don't get in."
"I like the bouncy house idea. And we can have a table for food and snacks. Maybe even have the pool open for patents to watch their babies swim.", Changbin suggested.
"Good idea Binnie.", Chan replied.
Felix and Jeongin were tasked with organizing the food and snacks. They went inside of the home to do so.
Chan and Changbin sat on the front porch together, tasked with finding good bouncy houses for kids.
"Where can we find three that'll fit in the backyard?", Changbin asked.
"Hmm, I don't know. But we'll figure it out."
Changbin watched Chan open his laptop. The background photo was a picture of Seungmin.
"Heh, he's adorable."
"He really is. You're doing a great job Chan."
"Hm. I just wish I could do better."
"What do you mean?"
Chan sighed and stopped typing.
"I promised myself that if I ever became a dad, I would provide my kid with everything he could ever want for."
"And you have."
"No, I haven't. And I know that more is going to be taken from him. So for right now...I have to do everything I can."
"What do you mean more will be taken from him?"
Chan turned to Changbin.
For the first time since the younger had known Chan, he saw a look of fear in his eyes.
"Changbin. I guess now is the time to ask."
"What is it?"
"If something ever happened to me, could you promise me you'll take care of Seungmin?"
"Hyung...of course I will. But you're not going anywhere, ever."
Chan looked down.
"Changbin, my little boy means the world to me. I would do anything for him. His mother on the other hand...she wouldn't. And what I can't do is have him grow up without her."
"So...what are you going to do?"
"I'm going to her place tomorrow, and I'm going to talk to her about being in Seungmin's life."
"But didn't you say her new boyfriend doesn't like you? Like...really doesn't like you? He's threatened you to stay away from her before."
"I know. Which is why I asked you what I asked you."
Changbin didn't know how to respond. He just sat there and listened.
"Seungmin is a very special kid. And he is going to need the support of all of you as he grows up."
"Hyung don't talk like that."
"Just listen."
Changbin nodded.
"Everything I do. I do it for him. If this does go south tomorrow, I want you to let him know that I never meant to make him sad. That I always fought for him to have both his parents in his life."
"But if you get hurt...he loses both. This isn't worth it."
"But he is. There's always a chance...and this time I have to take it."
The front door of the home opened and Seungmin came speed walking out.
"Dada!", he said.
Chan picked him up.
"Hi my little champion. I love your boots."
"Thanks!"
Changbin watched Chan entertain his little boy.
"Hey hyung?"
"Hm?"
"Can I take a photo of you and Seungmin?"
"Sure."
Changbin took out his phone.
Seungmin smiled a very wide smile, one that looked identical to his dad.
Changbin snapped a photo.
"Thank you."
--------------------------------------------------------
Changbin pulled a photo from his wallet and handed it to Seungmin.
"Dada.", Seungmin said, holding the photo.
Changbin watched his facial expression change to a pout.
"Where dada?", he asked.
He didn't know how to reply.
Seungmin didn't quite understand what happened to his dad. He was far too little.
All he knew was that he hasn't seen him in a long time.
So, Changbin had to make his own answer.
"Seungmin, sometimes people do things that they think will be good for them. But they turn out bad."
The small boy tilted his head.
"Your dad did something like that."
Seungmin looked at the photo.
Surprisingly, the small boy seemed to understand. He looked at Changbin.
"Find mama?"
"He did. Unfortunately...he did."
Changbin didn't know what to expect from Seungmin's response, but it surely wasn't for him to suddenly begin uncontrollably crying.
"Oh sweetie...don't be upset! You have us. We're not leaving you. I promise, okay?"
Seungmin hugged Changbin, crying loudly.
Felix came outside.
"Need help?", he asked.
Changbin nodded yes.
Felix sat on the porch swing.
He spoke (in english) to Seungmin.
"Honey pot, come here. Let me talk to you."
Changbin handed the crying boy to Felix.
"You can't cry now, you know why?"
"Why?", Seungmin asked through tears.
Felix pointed up.
All three of them looked at the sky.
There were some stars out tonight, a clear and gorgeous sight.
"Because someone that's all the way up there is watching, and he doesn't want you to cry."
"No cry?"
"No cry."
Changbin pointed to the sky.
"Look! A shooting star!"
They all stared at the sky again, watching the star go by.
"See? There he was. Do you know who that was?", Felix asked.
Seungmin held up his picture.
"Dada?"
Felix and Changbin made eye contact, sharing a knowing expression.
"Yes. That's your dada."
Seungmin stood up on Felix's lap and waved at the sky.
"Hi dada!"
Changbin took out his phone, taking another photo.
"Gonna post it?", Felix asked.
"You know it."

jutdwae: Isn't he lovely? I have a feeling he'll be just like his dad one day.
Hopefully you see this in another life. But for now I just want you to know that I will keep my promise.
Seungmin will always know who you were. And we, will never forget.
Love you big brother.
