Chapter Four
Rachel's POV
I sat on my bed, my head in my hands. I lifted my shirt up just enough to see the scar on my stomach, the scar from the bullet that nearly killed me. There were still times every once in awhile that I woke up, hearing that shot and feeling the stabbing pain in my stomach. I was now regretting my decision to not tell the kids, especially since those men had just been released a couple weeks ago. I heard laughter, and then Jacob came in the room, sitting beside me.
"Hey. What happened? You've got that look again. What's wrong?" I showed him the note.
"Should we at least tell Blaire about what happened?" He sighed, running a hand through his hair.
"I think so. Because if something happens, and one or both of us is taken, she should know what's happening." I looked up to see Blaire in the doorway.
"Who should know what's happening?" I patted the bed beside me, and she came in, sitting down. Jacob closed the door, and nodded slightly. I sighed, taking her hands.
"There's something that happened to me when I was about your age that your dad and I think you need to know about." She looked confused, and then I showed her the scar. Her eyes grew wide, shocked.
"What happened?" Jacob sat beside me, gently rubbing my shoulder.
"I was kidnapped. It was me....And your aunt Lucy. Later, they also took my mum, uncle Luke, aunt Courtney, and nearly killed my dad." She looked down, then back up at me.
"So.....does that have something to do with his limp?" I nodded.
"It has everything to do with that. They beat him up, shot him twice, and he shouldn't have survived it." She looked at the ground again, trying to process what she had just been told.
"So....does this have something to do with the note you called Mimi and Poppa about?" I sighed, nodding.
"The men who caused all that were just released from prison, and they sent a threatening note to me. And now....We're not sure if they're going to try and get us back or not." She closed her eyes, breathing slowly. Then, Jacob sat beside her, a gentle hand on her shoulder.
"It's going to be okay, baby. I promise." She nodded slowly, and I wrapped my arms around her.
"Blaire, it's going to be alright. We'll be prepared in they try and come this time." She smiled slightly, looking at me. She nodded again, more sure this time. She hugged both of us, and then she stood and left. Jacob and I sat on our bed, and he put an arm around my shoulders.
"It will be okay, Rachel. If they come, they're gonna regret it. This isn't going to happen again." I nodded, hugging him.
A few days later, Blaire was at her friend Amelia's house, and the other kids were home. I woke up to a crash downstairs, and Jacob wasn't beside me. I slowly got out of bed, and made sure Lucas, Lucy, and Gracia were still in bed. I slipped down the stairs, and found two older men and a teenage boy in our kitchen. One of the men had one of our kitchen knives, and he was holding it to Jacob's throat.
"Hello, Miss Smallbone. Long time no see." I took a step back, my heart skipping a beat. Isaac.
"No. Get out. Get out of my house, now!" Jonathan pressed the knife harder on Jacob's throat, and I saw a trickle of blood.
"You wanna keep him alive, you come with us. Got it? T, go get the kids." 'T' nodded, and left the room, coming back with our sleepy children. Isaac pulled out a gun, slowly cocking it and aiming it at me. I could see Lucas's eyes widen as he recognized what he held.
"Now......If you want to keep your kids alive, you'll do what I say. Understood?" I nodded slowly, and he led us outside, forcing us into a white van. Jacob held me close, and I started crying. I couldn't protect my children from my past, and what had happened when I was Blaire's age. How could I protect them from anything else now?
