Chapter IV: A Park and a Pursuit

Sagittarius threw her backpack sloppily onto her bed, quickly flinging herself down as well. She reclined against the headboard and opened her phone to find no new messages.

'That's weird,' she thought. 'Usually I have at least a couple from the group chat.'

She decided to change that by taking the initiative and being the first to send a message. It said:

Party at my house tomorrow @7. Bring food.

Almost instantly, she got some replies.

Libra: It's a little short notice, but I'll be there!

Aries: Alright, it's about time we did something fun!

Capricorn: I might be a little late but I can go.

Cancer: Sounds good!! :)

Taurus: I don't mean to be stereotypical, but heck yeah food!!!!

Aquarius: I am a big poo head.

Aquarius: Ignore that last message it was from Gemini.

Gemini: No it wasn't.

Aquarius: Shut up.

Sagittarius laughed to herself about those two. It was a good thing they didn't like each other, otherwise it would be double the trouble. She shook her head and went to go meet up with her friends at the park.

An hour or two later, Aquarius and Cancer were wandering around the woods behind Cancer's house. This was something that the two often did. Aquarius loved to adventure and Cancer just enjoyed being in nature. Their unexpected routine started about a year prior. They were both wandering separately about the woods that sat between River Drive (Cancer's street) and Hurricane Boulevard (Aquarius's street), when they happened to run into each other. Ever since, they have been going on forest expeditions with one another because it was much more fun than doing it by their lonesome.

Currently, the air and water sign were jumping on the stones half-buried along the path. It was a common game they played, almost like a version of "the floor is lava". Birds chirped overhead in the tall trees and rays of sun poked through the leaves as they hopped about. Aiming for the same rock, they both jumped on it, only to bump into each other and fall down laughing.

"Darn it I thought I was finally going to beat you for once!" Aquarius giggled, picking herself up and brushing off the dirt clinging to her backside.

"You'll never defeat the master!" Cancer hollered to the sky, raising his fists in the air. Aqua rolled her eyes and threw a small stone at his chest, causing him to snap his head in her direction. "Oh you're going to get it now!"

Aquarius laughed loudly as she took off deeper into the forest. "You'll have to catch me first!"

Cancer bounded after her, careful not to trip on any tree roots or stones. He knew exactly where she was headed - there was a small creek down an incline up ahead. It was their favorite part of the woods. An old treehouse lay hidden in the canopy on the banks, adding an air of mystery to the place.

Turning a sharp corner, Cancer suddenly ran into someone's back. He sighed, relieved that it was just Aquarius. Aqua's head whipped around as she put a finger to her lips, signaling him to be silent. He gave the girl a confused looked, wondering what was going on. She then pointed ahead of her, giving away why she wanted him to be quiet. Sitting on a large rock by the river sat two figures - a boy and a girl. They were a distance away, far enough that he couldn't see their faces, but close enough so that he could hear their words.

"I just don't know how much longer I can keep it in. You know how bad I am with secrets," the brown-haired boy said.

"We can tell everyone together at the party tomorrow," the girl with midnight hair replied. "But until then, let's enjoy the time we have now without our friends probing for every little detail about us." She then started talking in a mimicking, high-pitched, frilly voice, all the while gesticulating with her hands. "Oh, how did you two get together? When was the moment you knew you were in love?" Her face then dropped. "And blah, blah, blah. So on, so forth."

The boy sighed and looked her in the eyes with a smile. He took his hand and pushed her dark hair behind her ear. "You've got quite the point there." He then leaned in closing the space between them.

Cancer momentarily became distracted by Aquarius slowly turning to face him with a bewildered look in her eyes. She looked into his blue ones and whispered, "You know who they are, right?"

Cancer shook his head no, anticipating what she had to say.

She leaned in closer and quietly exclaimed, "That's Scorpio and Capricorn!"

The sun was out, the sky was blue, and birds could be heard chirping from atop the trees. It was a beautiful afternoon in late August as four friends stood in a circle in the middle of a large green in the neighborhood park.

A fiery boy named Aries threw the frisbee with perfect ease, flicking his wrist forward, sending it spiraling through the air. One of the other fire signs caught it with one hand, before sending it back to a short female with big, green eyes, who, in turn, passed it onto the fourth and final addition of their group.

"So what are we doing at your party tomorrow, Sagi?" Virgo pondered.

"Well I'm glad you asked," Sagi smirked, handing the frisbee off to Leo. "I don't know, I was thinking...maybe a little bit of Truth or Dare, maybe a little bit of Seven Minutes in Heaven, you know, the usual."

Aries groaned. "Booooring."

"That's funny," Sagittarius said, with no emotion whatsoever in her voice, "because I don't remember asking for your opinion." She glared at him. "Plus it's all a part of my plan."

"And what plan would that be?" Virgo asked, becoming increasingly suspicious of her brunette friend.

"Oh, just a little design of mine to get some of you loners a special somebody."

"Look who's talking," Leo snorted. "You're just as single as us."

Sagi rolled her eyes. "Well I know that. However, the plan concerns you people, not me."

"Well who exactly are you going to be trying to pair us up with?" Aries asked. "Because I'm not exactly unhappy with my life as a free man." He put his hands behind his head in a relaxed, arrogant fashion.

"Well you're a little difficult to pin down, Mr. Troublemaker," she said matter-of-factly. "But I've thought it over, and I think I've settled on Libra as being the Juliette to your Romeo."

Aries looked at her, incredulous, as if she had just suggested that he eat garbage for dinner or something of that fashion. "Are you serious? Me? With her? No thank you."

"Whatever, I knew you wouldn't be game anyway," she muttered. "But as for the rest, I have you down to a science."

"No way!" Cancer accidentally yelled.

"Ssh!" Aquarius covered his mouth with her hand in an attempt to silence him. Unfortunately, the damage had been done.

"Who's there?!" Capricorn angrily looked around, holding Scorpio close. "Show yourself!"

"Run!" Aquarius grabbed Cancer's hand, taking him along with her back into the foliage and out of sight. As they ran, they heard footsteps behind them quickly approaching. Cancer suddenly took a turn to the left, pulling Aquarius with him behind a tree. Their pursuer stopped a mere ten feet away, looking around in circles, trying to find where the two might have gone. A flame ignited only by anger could be seen in his eyes.

Scorpio finally caught up to him and put a hand on his shoulder. "Cap, they're long gone by now, it's no use. Let's get out of here."

"But what if they know who we are? Sagittarius will personally have our heads if she finds out about us from anyone other than you and me."

"Then I'll have to deal with them myself," Scorpio assured them, leading Capricorn through the woods and out of sight.

Realizing they were safe, Aqua and Cancer reemerged from the tree they were hiding behind and looked at each other with shocked faces. As if on cue, they burst into a fit of hysterical laughter.

"That was so close!" Cancer exclaimed, leaning his arms on his bent knees and wiping away a tear that was forming in the corner of his eye.

"I know," Aquarius agreed, letting another giggle escape, "but we should probably get out of here before we run into any more trouble."

"Can't argue with that," Cancer complied.

They each said their goodbyes, parting ways with a smile on their face, and anticipating the day that tomorrow would bring.

Aye fam long time no see! I was personally super excited to write this chapter. Caprio is canon! I've been working on this one for a little while so I'm happy that it's finally up. I finished this at like 5:00 am AKA now because snow days are a wonderful thing and they allow me to stay up this late. Anyways, here are the chapter-ly questions:

How do you think Scorpio and Capricorn are going to tell the group about their relationship?

Will Cancer and Aqua do it first or are they too nice for that?

What do you think are some of Sagittarius's ships that are unmentioned in this chapter?

What do you think (or what do you want) to happen at the party? (I might try to incorporate any of your ideas/suggestions into the chapter if I like them)

Until next time,
