Runnin' Low on Patience, Runnin' Low on Flames

"You guys sat outside for two hours?" I ask John as he shrugs.

"Yeah, I can't believe you guys sit in desks the whole two hours." He laughs softly. "I know I couldn't do that."

I shrug. "It's fine when you're learning about something you enjoy. The other day, we held a mock trial for a woman who stabbed her husband ten times."

He raises an eyebrow. "Why'd she do that?"

I shrug again. "I guess he found out about her affair with the milkman. It was a real thing that happened in Chicago I suppose, and she was sent to jail both in the real case and our mock trial."

He nods. "Well, that's fun." He says. "What role did you do?"

"I was the prosecution, so I had the easier side. Next time, though, I get to defend the harder side. The professor wants to give me more of a challenge." I explain and he chuckles.

"I can't believe he thought you would fail his class at first. Now he's challenging you on the third week?"

I smirk slightly. "I don't think he actually thought I was going to fail. I think he knew if he could give me something to prove him wrong on, I would do it and then exceed his expectations."

"Oh, like that time you turned in your entire partner project with Jefferson two weeks early?" John asks.

I laugh a bit and nod. "Oh, hell yeah. He really thought he gave me a hard deadline to pass. Oh, the look on his face when I slammed it down on his desk."

He chuckles and shakes his head. "Anyway, aside from you being just a great smart student at law school, meet any friends? Any, potentially hotter guys, gals, or nonbinary pals?" He asks, leaning his chin in his hand.

I roll my eyes and lean forward. "None hotter than you, Laurens." I chuckle as he smiles in relief. "Although, there are a couple people that are nice to talk to. We were thinking about planning a game night some day." I say as I grab our dishes and start rinsing them in the sink.

I see him nod as he follows after me, leaning against the counter. "I think that would be fun. We could host it here and I could invite a couple people I've met." He says and I smile at him.

"I think that would be a great idea."

Let me pause this for a moment just to say -- This was not a great idea. I don't know what I was thinking, these two types of people are completely different, and wouldn't have anything in common. Sometimes I wonder how John and I even fell in love in the first place.

Was it even love? Not likely.

I set my stuff down as I enter the house, sighing heavily as I looked around the apartment for my boyfriend. I find him in the bedroom, sitting on a facetime call. I open the door and then knock to let him know I'm in the room. He was laughing before he looked up at me, and then back at his phone.

"Oh, I've gotta go now. I'll see you tomorrow." He waves at the camera and then before I could see who he was talking to, he hung up the call.

I lay dramatically in his lap, looking up at him and he smiles down at me. "Hi, Lexi." He says.

I smile back at him. "Who were you on the phone with?" I ask.

He shrugs. "Just one of the girls in my classes. We were talking about our English professor and how boring he was." He explains.

I nod as I sit up. "Sounds fun." I mumble.

He pulls me into a side hug. "How were your classes today? You sound bummed."

I shrug and lean into him, feeling comfortable. "Just tired. My professors really don't take their job lightly."

He kisses the top of my head. "Well, if you want, we can go cuddle on the couch and watch a movie to relax."

I shake my head and pull away, but he grabs my hand. "I have tons of homework to do, I won't have time to do that."

"Come on, we can watch a movie while we eat dinner and then you can do your work." He says.

I raise an eyebrow at him and then chuckle while shaking my head. "John, we never just watch a movie, and I don't have the time or energy for that right now."

He whines. "Ugh, fine. Go do your homework then."

I giggle and kiss his cheek before going to the little desk we had set up in the livingroom, displaying my stuff in front of me so I could get working on my homework.

I could hear John talking to someone in the other room, so I just assumed he was back on facetime. He talked with this person a lot, honestly. I'm sure they're just really close friends, but I'm starting to get the feeling he pays a bit too much attention to his art friends compared to me.

Not that I'm jealous or anything. He's just excited because he's finally surrounded by people like him.

We're very different people, but that's why we work so well, right? I mean, sure it's nice to be surrounded by people just like you, but the complete opposite just brings spice to your life. I think.

I shake my thoughts away and return back to my work, deciding passing these classes was more important than worrying about John's new friends.
