Looking At The Pictures I Keep On My Shelf
"John, if you don't get your ass out of my apartment this instant, I will kick you out physically." I tell the taller, freckled man in front of me.
He scoffs and looks down at me. "First off, we both know you physically can't do that. Second off, I pay for half of this apartment, too, you can't just kick me out!"
"I swear to God, John. I'll cover your part of the rent, I'll find a new roommate, just get the hell out!"
He frowns at me and starts grabbing his things around him. "Fine, but good luck finding someone to put up with you. You're such a pretentious asshole."
"Oh, I'm the pretentious one? Why don't you just go hang out with-"
I guess I'm probably confusing you guys a little bit, huh.
Let me start off where we left off. The week before I started college.
"And to think, this all started because I needed you to do my homework for me."
I think about it a moment and chuckle. "Well, it's a good thing I said yes, then."
He smiles and nods. "Yeah, definitely."
I turn and kiss him again, not caring that we were in the middle of the grocery aisle. People could get around us. Nothing could tear us apart at this moment. He was mine, and I was his. And it was perfect.
Well, perfect until some little kid ran right into us. We pulled away and he shot right between us, causing John and I to chuckle.
We finish shopping and then head back to our apartment. It was small, sure, but it was ours. I like that word. Ours. It made me smile every time I thought about it.
As we were sitting on our couch and watching our movie, John leans against me. "Hey, I was thinking of inviting our friends over before we all go back to school." He says.
I nod slowly. "And who exactly would we be inviting?" I ask as I run my fingers through his coarse hair.
He shrugs. "The Schuylers and Herc and Laf. Maria can come too, just not Thomas Paine. I hate that guy."
I chuckle softly. "Okay, well, we can see, but it's not like we moved down the street, we moved out of state."
John rolls his eyes. "Please, we moved to Jersey, not Arizona. It's like maybe a two hour drive."
"Well, yeah. Eliza went to LA, though, so I don't think she'll be able to come. Angelica's still in New York, Peggy's still in high school so obviously she's still there.." I pause a moment. "And Herc and Laf... I actually don't know what they ended up doing. They had like four or five different plans."
"Why don't we call them?" He suggests and I nod and go to facetime Lafayette.
Hercules answers for him and I see him standing in a room I had not recognized. "Hey, guys." He waves.
John raises an eyebrow. "Where's Laf?" He asks, earning a long, dramatic sigh from the Irish man on the other side of the phone.
"He's currently arguing with the chef about our meals, even though I told him it wasn't a big deal. He saw you guys were calling and threw the phone at me." He explains, looking off camera. "Hey, Laf, seriously this is not necessary."
"Chef? Where are you guys?" I ask as I start to braid John's hair. I was still learning how to, but I got better now that John let me do it more often.
"We're at a hotel in Paris. We decided to take a year off of college and travel all of Europe, and Laf insisted we stopped in Paris first. Though, now I'm seeing that was a bit of a mistake."
He flips the camera and we see Lafayette and some poor baker arguing with each other.
"You're doing a lot to stop the fight, aren't you." John says sarcastically.
Herc flips the camera back to him and shrugs. "It's been entertaining so far. Hold on, though."
He moves the phone down and through the screen, we can vaguely see him yelling at Laf. "Marie-Joseph Paul Yves Roch Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de La Fayette! The food was fine! Now come over here and say hello to your friends."
There was a moment of silence from both ends of the call and I hear shuffling as Hercules quietly apologizes to the chef, bringing the camera back up to him and Lafayette.
"Oh, hello!" Laf says, smiling brightly as if nothing just happened.
I roll my eyes. This wasn't unlike Laf, especially when it came to things with Herc. I have no doubt he was just upset because he wanted his experience in his hometown to be magical, and something about the food was just not that.
"Hi, Laf." I say. John just waves.
"Anyway, did you guys want something or..?"
John shakes his head. "We just wanted to see what option you guys actually decided on. See you later, okay?"
They nod and hang the phone up and I turn my head towards John, kissing his cheek softly. "Would you ever get into a fight with a chef for me, John?" I ask.
"Absolutely not." He says and I scoff as I lean into him. "The second I would get into an argument, you would step in and destroy the poor chef. My own personal lawyer for everyday life, and you haven't even gone to law school yet."
I cross my arms and roll my eyes. "Oh, whatever John." I pout.
He giggles and kisses the top of my head. "You know I'm right."
"Never." I stick my tongue out at him and he just turns to the movie as he continues cuddling me.
Things were so great at one point.. I don't get what happened between us.
