Epilogue
Chanyeol walked inside the house and sighed as he walked in. No one came to greet him as before as he took off his shoes and jacket.
The raven head stared at his husband on the couch. The eyes which once held galaxies and twinkled like the brightest star of the night no longer looked lively. It was void of emotions black as a rainy day. Baekhyun stared in the direction of their son who was building the tallest tower with his lego.
Large eye bags and messy hair was all he could see on his husband. It had been a week since the house was filled with three loud giggles but now it was only Jae-eun who smiled innocently and giggled with no care in the world unaware of what his parents were going through.
Jae-eun was two years old and the couple decided to try for a second baby. The couple was more than excited when they saw the two lines staring back at them in the pregnancy test. Only Minseok and Kyungsoo were aware of it since the couple wanted to keep it a secret till he reached his second trimester.
But a tragedy happened when Baekhyun woke up one night covered in sweats and in extreme pain on his midsection. It had been only a month and a half since the couple found out that they would be parents again only to lose that dream when Minseok said that it was an ectopic pregnancy where the egg implants outside the uterine wall.
Baekhyun could not believe what he was hearing and Chanyeol could only hope that they would bounce back from the tragic event. It had been a whole week since their friends last saw the couple laughing and smiling.
Jongin and Sehun had tried to ask the two about what happened but they never opened their lips. So the two men ended up playing with Jae-eun who looked lonely. The little boy had pulled Sehun to his parents' bedroom. With much struggle, Jae-eun hauled himself up the bed and crawled to the pillow.
The dancer and brunet widened their eyes seeing the little onesie which said, 'Player #4' underneath it. "Papa cwy," the two-year-old blurted out. It did not take long for them to put two and two together and when they understood, they could not help but pity the couple who were suffering in silence.
Back to the present, Chanyeol watched as Jae-eun pulled himself up to his Papa on the couch. "Pway with mwe," he showed a toothy grin. The raven head almost teared up at the sight of his beautiful husband trying to force a smile. "I'm a little tired, Jae. Play with Daddy, alright? He'll be home soon." The little boy pouted as angry tears pooled in his eyes.
Baekhyun bit his lips before turning to the other side and pull the sheet over him. Before Jae-eun could do something, "I'm home," said Chanyeol and the two-year-old ran over to his other parent and hugged his leg, "Daddy."
The tall CEO smiled at the boy and picked him up before smooching his mochi cheeks. The turned to Baekhyun, "I bought dinner, Baek. I hope japchae is alright."
"I'm not hungry, you guys eat. I think I'll go to bed."
Chanyeol held back his tears as he watched his husband walk up the stairs. It had been a week since they lost their second baby and a week since Baekhyun last talked with Chanyeol or anyone, even the two-year-old.
"Let's eat, yeah?" Jae-eun nodded with a grin showing off the cute dimple on his cheek.
Later that night, Chanyeol put Jae-eun to sleep and climbed into their bed mentally sighing at his husband who had his back turned to him. He could not hear anything but from how the other's shoulders were shaking, he could understand that he was crying. Again.
"Baek?" he called as gently as he could as he laid down facing Baekhyun's back. No response. "Baek, please? We're hurting Jae, baby. Don't suffer alone, let me in. Please, Baek?" The elder wiped off his tears as he moved away and laid on his side.
Chanyeol stared at the ceiling before sitting up. His eyes looked determined. He turned to his husband and went to his side.
Before Baekhyun could say anything, he was pulled up to sit. Chanyeol held his shoulders as he stared into those lifeless red eyes. "Baekhyun, please. I know it hurts, I might not know exactly how you feel but let me in. Don't keep me in the dark. I promised to love you and be with you forever and always but you being like this makes me think we're drifting away. Please, Baek, tell me everything instead of keeping it to yourself. Call me by my name just once, only once." He moved his hands to his sunken cheek, slowly caressing it.
"I want to hear your voice even if it's just to curse me, Baek. Take all the time you need to come back up but let me help you. I'm suffering too so let's talk about our thoughts instead of keeping it to ourselves, Baek. Let's be each other's medicine, baby. Just trust me and let me in. I love you, Baek. But please baby, let's face this together."
The raven head had his hand on his husband's thigh slowly rubbing in circles as tears fell from their eyes. "Chanyeol," the CEO looked up at his husband at the speed of lightning, eyes searching the other for confirmation. "Chanyeol,"
"I'm here, baby. Tell me."
"It hurts," the younger sobbed as he looked at his lap, "How could that happen? I did not want to face you after what happened. I hurt you. I let our baby die, Yeol."
Chanyeol wiped his tears not minding his face which was dampened with tears, "Fool! You did not hurt me, Baek. You did not let the baby die, you hear me? Disappointments and heartbreaks are all part of life, Baek. We just need to overcome them and you don't need to do it alone because you have me, baby. You just have to talk to me, Baek."
The elder moved his hands up and down the younger's arm, "I can't look at you beating yourself up like this, Baek. I feel useless when you're like this and I can't do anything to help you. Please let me help, baby."
"I'm so sorry," the younger mumbled as he broke into sobs and Chanyeol was quick to pull him into an embrace, "Don't apologize, my baby smurf. Just promise whatever happens you would tell me and let me know. I want to be there for you, Baek. I want to help you with anything and everything, baby."
Baekhyun's sobs slowly died down as he cried on his husband's shoulder. Chanyeol let him cry as he soothingly stroked the younger's hair.
A few minutes passed and the couple pulled away. "Now are you hungry?" The raven head said tapping his husband's red nose. Baekhyun pouted as he gave a little nod. His husband stood up and ruffled his hair, "Stay here, alright? I'll get it for you."
When Chanyeol came back, he could not see his little husband anywhere in the room. "Baek?" he called out but no reply. He checked the bathroom before walking up to the nursery.
Once he did, a sigh of relief escaped his lips. Baekhyun had somehow squeezed himself next to Jae-eun inside the crib. "How did you get here, my baby smurf?" Baekhyun replied with a sheepish smile.
"I missed Jae so much. I made him cry too."
"He would have understood if he was old enough, baby. It's alright. And let's go on a picnic at the beach or maybe visit the zoo. He'll be alright."
The doctor nodded eyes never leaving their son's face as he gently caressed the raven locks taking care not to wake the boy. "Yeol?" the elder hummed, "I got inside but I don't know how to get out."
Soft giggles left Chanyeol's lips as he pulled up his husband and carried him out, "Thank you, Yeol."
Chanyeol smiled before nuzzling his nose into the other's hair, "I missed your voice, baby smurf."
"I missed being in your arms, my giant."
The two parents shared a short kiss before leaving for their room.
After a late dinner, Baekhyun fell asleep and Chanyeol stayed up for a little while to admire his husband before falling asleep as well.
The next morning, Chanyeol woke up to a cold bed. But once he jogged downstairs his heart felt lighter at the two giggles he loved the most.
"The flight's going to land," Baekhyun swirled the spoon with food in front of Jae-eun who loudly giggled before opening his lips wide. "Yay! The flight landed," another loud squeal resonated throughout the house making the parents smile.
"You're finally back!" Chanyeol hugged his husband from behind and pecked the other's cheek. Baekhyun nodded, "I'm sorry for worrying you all this time," he said placing his slender hands over the other's larger ones.
_______
Baekhyun began working at the hospital again along with Minseok and Kyungsoo. Minseok and Chen had a three-year-old daughter while Kyungsoo and Jongin had twin boys who were hyperactive keeping the two parents on their feet.
Chanyeol had just finished his meeting and was heading to his office when a familiar squeal caught his attention, "Daddy." Baekhyun stepped out of the elevator with the five-year-old in his arms.
Before Chanyeol could approach them, the smaller husband pointed his finger at the elder and Jae-eun mirrored it, "Bang! Bang! Bang!" The raven played along as he held his chest and fell down.
He soon got up only to be shot again. The employers near them initially stared at their boss with an astonished expression but soon began smiling at the happy family. "What are you two doing here?" the CEO asked taking Jae-eun from his husband and smooching his cheeks.
"I went to pick him up and thought we'd drop by since we missed you," replied Baekhyun and the raven head giggled, "Really?" The smaller shook his head, "It was a joke. We didn't miss you."
Baekhyun giggled at his pouting husband before dragging him to his office.
Once he pushed open the door, Chanyeol's mouth fell open as he stared at the room in front of him. He could see balloon's all over his office and a new mug on his desk. "We came to drop by something for you, darling," said Baekhyun and took the mug in his hands before handing it to his husband.
Chanyeol made their son sit on the couch before walking up to his husband and taking the mug.
'Soon-to-be Daddy of 2!' it read and Chanyeol widened his eyes as he looked back and forth at his husband and the mug in his hands. "No, really?"
"Yes, Yeol. This time everything looks fine. We're going to be parents again!"
Chanyeol placed the mug down before lifting his husband and swirling him around, "I'm so happy right now. Oh, my God! Baek!" The smaller man smiled caressing his husband's raven locks, "It feels like a dream, Baek."
"It's definitely not a dream, Yeol. We're having another baby."
The couple were on cloud nine and so happy that nothing could ever bring them down.
The funniest event was when they told Jae-eun that he would be having a little sibling. "But I want a puppy," the boy had replied, undoubtedly something he had learned from Taehyung's son.
"But you'd have someone to play with and you'd have more toys, you know?"
The toddler's eyes twinkled, "More toys?" When his parents nodded, the boy giggled loudly and asked when his baby sibling would be here to which the parents replied in a few months. And all his happiness left his face, "Not tomowwow?"
"No, baby," Baekhyun replied and the boy pouted asking why his sibling would be so slow, "Baby needs to grow up like you, right?" Jae-eun nodded with a little pout.
After that, the toddler began putting away toys for his sibling to play with. Chanyeol held his toe which had stepped on a lego and barely stopped himself from cursing, "Jae! I told you not to make a mess!"
"It's for baby, Daddy."
"A single lego?" he showed the piece of plastic and the boy gave a toothy grin as he nodded.
_____
Months passed by in a blink and the family of three were at the mall doing the final shopping for their newest family member who might be joining them in a month. Jae-eun was playing with his smurf as Chanyeol pushed the trolley beside his husband.
They fought about gender this time too but both agreed that it was going to be a little girl. Baekhyun showed his husband the pair of tiny pink shoes which caught his eyes and the elder cooed at it, "So pretty!"
"Imagine our daughter in this. She would look so adorable," said Baekhyun with an excited squeal leaving his lips. The toddler looked in the direction of the giant smurf plushie and pulled on his father's shirt making him look at the boy.
"What is it, Jae?"
"Daddy," he pointed his finger behind the tall man, "Lookie!"
Chanyeol shook his head, "We're not here for that, baby. We're here to buy for baby." The toddler pouted and his other parent laughed at the sulking toddler, "Take him there but don't get him anything Let him look around, he would calm down then."
Chanyeol was the strict yet cool parent. He would say no to Jae-eun only to buy it for him later and the two loved to sneak out at night for ice cream or drives leaving a tired Baekhyun to sleep.
But Baekhyun was pretty strict. He said no to too many sweets and too many toys but what could he do when his husband loved to spoil their son.
The raven head nodded and lifted their son out of the seat before scooping him up into his arms, "Let's go see the giant smurf, Jae." The boy giggled smooching his father's cheek before waving at Baekhyun.
A few minutes passed and the smaller husband was standing at the counter. He looked around trying to find his husband and thought of calling him but remembered that he had left his phone at home.
But soon a little head caught his eyes as a smile found its way to his lips. He could see Jae-eun's head high above the shelves and looked a little lower to see the boy balanced on his husband's shoulder.
"I'll stand here, you guys sit there," said the raven head as he tried to hide the basket with plushies and cars in his hands. The younger who had already noticed it chuckled before nodding.
______
It was the last month and their new family member would be joining them anytime soon. The unborn baby loved to play kicks with Jae-eun who would poke the bulging tummy and get a kick as a response which always had him giggling in excitement and amusement.
"Jae, focus!" Chanyeol told their son who pouted. "Don't you want to be Papa and baby's Anpanman?" Jae-eun nodded frantically with furrowed brows and his hair bouncing up and down.
It had been a few days since the raven head had been trying to get their son to learn how to use the phone in case of emergencies. Chanyeol was suddenly called for a meeting in Japan and despite Baekhyun telling him he would be alright, his mind was not at ease.
Baekhyun had rejected the idea of asking their friends since he knew everyone would be busy with their families and their jobs. Minyoung had volunteered but she too had to go out of town for a little while.
The next afternoon, Baekhyun was on the couch scrolling through channels while Jae-eun was busy building a city with his Lego. The brunet pinched the bridge of his nose feeling his headache worsen with each minute.
"Papa!" the boy squealed, "Let's build a tower. As big as Daddy!" He said moving his hands away to demonstrate how big he wanted it. Baekhyun patted his head, "Papa is a little sick, okay? Can you play alone just for a little while, baby?"
Jae-eun nodded going back to his plastic city.
Five minutes later, Baekhyun found himself slowly falling asleep. The toddler ran to get his parent's phone and dialled Chanyeol who was on speed dial.
'Baek? Everything alright?'
"Daddy?"
'Oh, hey baby. What are you doing with Papa's phone? Where's Papa?'
"Papa sick. Papa not waking up."
The toddler got no reply as the call disconnected. With a pout, Jae-eun continued to build a tower as big as his Daddy.
Ten minutes passed and the loud slam of the front door resonated through the house.
"Baek!" Chanyeol dashed into the living room eyes full of concern and face as pale as sheet. "Daddy!"
"Just a minute, baby."
He scooped his husband in his arms but a voice stopped him and he looked down, "What are you doing here?"
"Jae said you were sick and did not wake up."
"I had a headache and I fell asleep."
The two parents turned to the toddler who grinned, "I'm Anpanman! I help Papa and baby." The two parents chuckled before crouching down to ruffle the boy's hair, "Yes, you're our little Anpanman, Jae!"
_____
The next day Chanyeol had boarded the plane to Japan. Since Baekhyun was not allowed to leave the house, Sehun had picked up Jae-eun to the airport to see off the reluctant raven head.
"When will Daddy be back, Uncle Hun?" the toddler asked as the brunet helped him take off his shoes. "Soon, kiddo," replied the elder tapping the boy's button nose making him giggle.
"Oh, you guys are back already?" Sehun looked at Baekhyun and smiled with a nod. "Papa!" he asked to be carried, "Soon, baby." The younger man looked at the CEO, "I need to tell you something but please promise not to freak out."
"Oh, my God!" the man gasped, "Are you divorcing your husband?" Baekhyun slapped his shoulder with an angry pout, "Shut up, you dramatic kid! Can you drive me to the hospital?"
"Hospital? Checkup?" The younger shook his head patting his tummy. When Sehun understood what he meant he laughed, "Chanyeol would feel so unfair that he might run here from Japan." Baekhyun laughed at that agreeing with the other.
"When did it start?"
"About an hour ago but I assumed it was Braxton hicks."
Sehun helped Jae-eun put his shoes back on while Baekhyun went to fetch the hospital bag. "Where we go?"
"You might meet your baby sibling soon, Jae. Excited?"
"Let's go get toys for baby."
Sehun laughed at his nephew as he carried him to the car. "Papa come too," the toddler squealed at the sight of his parent walking to the car. "Where we go?" the toddler asked his parent who was on the passenger seat.
As he opened his lips to reply, a painful groan left his lips as a painful contraction surged through him. Baekhyun had his eyes screwed shut as he squeezed on Sehun's hand, "You're not having a baby in my car, right? 'Cause I assure you, I would pass out. I mean it!"
"Shut up!" he replied panting for breath, "I had my last baby in an elevator. I'm not ready to have my other baby in a car, Oh!"
"Papa sick?" Baekhyun turned to his son with his bottom lip tugged between his teeth, "I'm okay, baby. I'm completely alright."
Jae-eun showed a toothy grin at the response before averting his focus to the rhymes on the radio. Once he turned around, Baekhyun leaned his head back as tears filled his eyes. Sehun squeezed his thigh and the younger turned to him. "It hurts," he mumbled loud enough for only Sehun to hear.
"I know, just a little bit, alright?"
Baekhyun continued to silently sob not wanting Jae-eun to break into tears since the last time he cried, his son joined him and Chanyeol had to deal with two babies.
He sighed out in relief when the hospital came into view.
Soon, all settled in the room, Baekhyun turned to Sehun, "Can you call Yeol?" The brunet nodded and walked out to call his cousin.
"Papa, you die?" Jae-eun pouted at his parent who widened his eyes, "I'm not dying, baby. Who told you that?"
"People with the dress, die."
Baekhyun looked at his hospital gown and figured he was talking about the movie Chanyeol and he had watched a few days ago. "I'm here so we can finally meet baby." Jae-eun still with a little pout, "It hurt, Papa?" Baekhyun shook his head with a little smile.
Sehun walked in, "Your husband needs to talk to you." Baekhyun chuckled before taking the phone from the other.
"Hey."
'Why didn't you tell me?'
"What? You thought I can look into the future?"
'Baek!" the other laughed hearing his husband whine.
"It was a few minutes after you left, what was I supposed to do?"
'I'll book a ticket right now.'
"Stay at the meeting and come back when it's done."
'And miss our baby's birth? Nope, not happening, Baek. Just keep me updated, alright?'
"Promise."
'I love you, baby. I'll be with you soon and hold your hands, my baby smurf.'
"I love you too, Yeol."
When Sehun came back, he saw the other crying, "What? What's wrong? Should I call Minseok?" Baekhyun shook his head, "Chanyeol's too sweet. Why is he so sweet?" The brunet rolled his eyes with a laugh.
"How's Lu?" Baekhyun asked a few minutes later and a small smile played on Sehun's lips as he remembered his lover, well husband. The couple got married a year and a half ago and were expecting their first child.
"He's good, we're good."
"You're so lovesick," said the doctor giggling at his friend. "Oh, please. I was not the one crying after a single phone call," Sehun retorted and the younger stuck out his tongue.
______
It was a few hours later and Minyoung had come back since she was not ready to leave Baekhyun alone. "Why is Chanyeol not here yet, Mom?" he pouted and the lady patted his head, "He could not find a flight but he said there was one and would try to get on that."
"Did he tell the baby not to come or something, I thought I would've had the baby by now. And it hurts so much."
Minyoung stroked the younger's back telling him it would be alright. Jae-eun was staying with his grandfather who had taken him for ice cream since the toddler would not get out of the room his parent was in.
His contractions were getting closer and his husband was not here yet. "I think you're almost there, Baek. Ready to meet your second baby?" Minseok smiled at his friend who tried to smile back.
"What's wrong?"
"Chanyeol's not here and I must have told him even if I thought it was just Braxton Hicks."
"I'm sure he'll be here, Baek. Don't worry, alright?"
But minutes passed and Minseok was telling him to get ready to push. Baekhyun still peeked at the door hoping to see his husband but nothing. "Ready? You know the drill, right?" Baekhyun nodded and breathed in.
As he was pushing with his eyes screwed shut, he felt hands intertwine with his.
"Yeol."
"I said I'll be here to hold your hand, right?"
A few minutes passed when a cry resonated through the room and Minseok looked up at Chanyeol, "Would the Daddy like to do the honours?"
The businessman nodded before pecking his husband's sweaty locks and walking over to the other end of the bed to cut their baby's cord. The nurses wiped the baby a little before laying her on the exhausted parent's chest.
"Hey, baby girl."
"Our little princess."
