Worlds
I'm looking down at the new universe that they just made. It's got a new earth in it, but it's not fully formed yet. We're not even sure if it's going to be called earth yet. It's not really, it's just a copy of our planet from before.
I suppose it doesn't really matter anyway. There's nothing much on it yet. It's just a rock floating in space. Aaron has taken the role as a god of time for now and Damien made him promise not to bring the new universe to the point where there are people on it until everyone knows their roles and how to deal with this.
They found out how to make the world by using one of the fountains in the garden. There are a few of them scattered around. They're pure white and have three bowls with water running from the top bowl to the bottom one. The new earth is in the uppermost bowl. From what I can tell, the other ones only have empty space with a few smaller worlds that also have nothing on them.
Suddenly a child who looks about nine years old comes running up to the fountain and almost knocks it over. That's weird, if there's only one of us every century then I should be the youngest one here. Did someone figure out how to create their families in here?
She has short blonde hair and deep brown eyes. She has pale skin and is wearing a blue and green dress that thankfully didn't dip into the fountain water. I can only imagine what kind of problems that would cause if it happened.
"Hey kid," I say, "Where did you come from? What are you doing here?"
"I'm one of the new gods same as you," she says.
"But you're just a kid. I'm supposed to be the youngest here. I was born in the last century before the world ended."
"Well, too bad. I wanted to be young and I will be."
"How old are you?"
"I'm nine."
"I mean, how old are you really?"
"None of your business."
"What century did you come from?"
"The first one."
"Wait really?!"
"Yup, I get to both the oldest and the youngest at the same time, and there's nothing you can do about it."
"If you've been around since the beginning, then why are you a nine year old?"
"Because I want to be."
"But why though?"
"Why are you the age you are?"
"Because this is my real age."
"Yeah, we'll see how that goes for you after a few centuries. Being this age is more fun. Anyways, what are you doing?"
"I was just looking at the new world, thinking about what's going to happen."
"Yeah, it is kind of neat looking. Just wait until there are actual people on it. Then the real fun begins."
"What do you mean?"
"Don't you know about the Greek gods and everything they did?"
"Yeah, what about them?"
"Well, they were probably from the last set of gods. That means that when there are people and whole cities down there, we'll get to mess with them too. Don't you think that'll be fun?"
"Maybe. What are you going to be the god of?"
"Oh, I don't know. Nothing? Everything? I think I'm just going to take care of whatever no one else is doing. If I don't pick a job, I'll be able to do pretty much anything I want and mess with mortals all day. They won't be able to do anything about it and I probably won't have consequences here either, especially if I stay a child."
"What if they don't let you do that?"
"Well, I guess I can always just play with my own world and have fun with that."
"Do you even know how to make your own world?"
"Sure I do. Do you wanna see?" she asks.
"Okay," I say nervously.
She happily leads me to a different fountain, this one has a bit of a yellow tint in it. It looks like it might be a bit older than the other one. She swirls her fingers in it and a small universe appears around her small hand.
She pulls her hand out and admires her work for a brief moment before the fountain focuses on a single planet within the darkness. She plunges her whole hand into the water and holds the planet in her hands for a brief moment. When she takes her hand away it looks fully formed, but there are no people or animals on it yet.
"How did you know how to do that?" I ask.
"It was easy," she says, "I figured out how to do it a couple days ago when the rest of you were talking about what you wanted to be in charge of. I got rid of all the other worlds I made. I think this is the same fountain that our world was in before it got destroyed. It's amazing to see how small everything was. To think it all fit in this little pool of water, all it took to build or destroy it was the wave of someone's hand and it just vanished."
She shoves her hand back into the water and drags it through the tiny universe. In a second everything in the water disperses and there's nothing left except for a small pool of water.
It's like there was nothing there at all. It's just like when you dissolve sugar in a bowl of water. Except here, it's just gone. Isn't it? Or are all of the pieces still in the water, just waiting to be brought back together into a new universe only to be destroyed just as easily?
"See," she says breaking me from my thoughts, "It's easy to make a world. All you have to do is make it happen."
"But how though?"
"I don't know. You're a goddess, you should be able to figure it out. I mean, if a nine year old can do it, surely you should be able to."
"Have you made any people yet?"
"No, I want to wait for the permanent world to be made so I can play with it. Maybe then the water wouldn't hurt my hands so much. I could just go down to the actual earth and mess with it directly."
"That water hurts your hands?"
She nods solemnly and looks down at her hand. It looks like it was just badly burned, and the parts that still have recognizable skin are bright red. What's in that stuff? How did Damien touch it without this happening.
"It burns like acid. I get the feeling that I'm not supposed to touch this stuff. Maybe because it's old, or maybe just because I'm not the god of creation. I'd hate to think what would do if someone drank it."
"Yeah."
"Hmm..."
"What?"
"If we're immortal gods, I wonder what would happen if I just..."
She then puts her hands back into the acid water and cups a bit in her hands. It looks like the burns are getting worse now. She brings it to her mouth and takes a small sip before throwing the rest of it onto me.
I start screaming. Oh my God! It's going to kill me! It hurts so much! It-
Wait. It doesn't hurt. It's just water. In a second it all rushes back to the fountain.
I look over at the girl and she's laughing her head off. Her hands are completely healed now. Wait, what?
She tricked me. In an instant my confusion turns to anger. That little girl tricked me!
"I can't believe you really fell for that!" she laughs.
"But, how did you do that to your hands?!"
"The same way I made myself a child, genius. If I can do this, why would it be hard to fake a little chemical burn."
"I swear to God, I will kill you!"
"We are the gods honey, and you can't kill me anyway. I'm immortal, remember."
"You little!"
"Bye, bye deary," she says before instantly teleporting away.
Great, I guess I have to deal with that for all eternity now. I can't believe she's the oldest one here. Oh, well. She'll probably spend most of her time on earth anyway once there are people on it she can mess with. She just better hope she doesn't make Damien or Aaron angry.
I wonder what they would do if she tried that on one of them. Maybe she'd get a punishment. I guess it would be two against one. Maybe they could send her down to work in hell for a while. I'm sure she'd be great at torturing people for all eternity. Then she'd be out of my hair too.
