Twelve
My team and I had surrounded the house.
The target just within our reach.
Coast city was luckily only a few hours from Gotham, which meant that my stalling could be explained as trying to find a ride. What better place than the impound yard right outside the police department.
"I want you all to move in on my signal. This man trained Slade Wilson so watch each other's sixes and we'll make it out of here." I whispered into our coms. There was a chorus of 'Yes Boss' and I alerted the first team to go through.
"Are you sure this is what you want? From what you told me, this Wintergreen guy used to be your father figure" Max was crouched next to me.
"He murdered someone close to me" I gripped my gun, though I think I'd prefer to kill the man with the hunting knife that was strapped to my thigh. "He doesn't deserve to live his days out in peace."
"You are the boss" Max checked his own gun, ensuring it would work properly, he touched his com. "Team B move out"
A section of my guys broke off, going through the basement to cut off any method of escape.
I went in with team C, entering through the splintered front door. The entire house was dead silent, some of my guys standing in empty rooms as while others lead me toward the last one.
Inside, Wintergreen was tied to a chair, staring at me as soon as I entered. I wasn't wearing my apprentice armor, I was in tactical gear, fully black with light blue accents. My mask covered my entire head, much like the one I wore as Slade's mini me, but this one was way more comfortable.
"Good morning you piece of garbage" I settled into an easy stance, crossing my arms.
"What are you doing here?" He growled. "When Slade finds out.."
"Oh he won't" Grinning, though I knew he couldn't see it, I gestured around me. "He thinks I'm hunting down that poor sap Charlie Gray. As far as he knows, I am."
"This is about Robin isn't it"
"Don't say his name" I snapped. "You don't deserve to utter it"
"And who's going to stop me?" Wintergreen's eyebrow raised in question. "You?"
Max stepped forward, I raised a hand, stopping him in his place. "Yes, me." I walked closer. "You don't seem to understand the predicament you're in. I'm here to kill you but I'm going to do it slowly, make you watch as you bleed out."
Wintergreen began to laugh. "That's rich coming from a girl who wouldn't throw a punch two years ago." He leaned forward as best he could. "You really think you can take a life, it's a lot harder then it looks sweetheart"
I smiled to myself, slowly taking out a smaller knife before throwing it into his shoulder. He tried to cry out but one of my men covered his mouth, wouldn't want to wake the neighbors after all.
"Good thing I've had lots of practice then. Slade's sent me on missions, all of which were successes, but I've gone on my own personal missions, taking out Slade's informants and contacts one by one. I've already disposed of a good number of them, enough to frustrate any plans that devil tries to make."
Wintergreen made a muffled noise and I nodded at my guy who promptly stepped away. "Weren't you a hero in training?"
"That girl died along with my best friend." I shifted, just itching to get this over with. "I know what I have to do now, whomever said revenge isn't fulfilling is a liar"
"You really think you can take down your father? He's unkillable!" He shouted in disbelief.
I couldn't stop the wicked smile from crossing my lips. "Oh, I'm not going to kill Slade. I need to test a theory first."
"There have been rumors, whispers really, of a weakness." Maxwell continued for me. "I've personally looked into the experiments done on Slade Wilson and the rumors line up with my findings."
I approached Wintergreen, setting my hands on either side of the armrests. "He's supposed to be invincible, but apparently his eyes can't grow back"
"You won't get close enough to try" He shot back confidently.
"Won't I?" I stood up straight, drawing my hunter's knife and handing it off to Zach, one of the men who'd been standing beside Wintergreen. "I seem to have found myself in an opportune position. I haven't tried to escape, I've had overwhelming success as his apprentice, and he trusts me." I backed away to my original spot, folding my arms against my chest. "As an added bonus, you won't live long enough to warn him about it."
Zach shoved some cloth into Wintergreen's mouth, preventing him from screaming out as he began to make incisions through out his body.
I couldn't help but watch with a morbid curiosity. How much would this old man be able to take before his body gave out?
He wasn't Slade, he wasn't enhanced. But it felt like I was finally avenging Dick. I was in a position to take out his killers and I was going to take it.
"We've got a problem." Someone announced over the coms. "Seems like a concerned neighbor."
Crap.
"I'll take care of it" I replied, already slipping out of my tactical gear. Underneath I had an undershirt and my pants could pass for something fashionable someone my age would wear. "Don't stop unless he's barely conscious, I want the killing blow" I warned, handing most of my armor and anything incriminating to Max who took them without complaint.
I quickly rushed downstairs, opening the door to an older woman. "Hello" I greeted with a kind smile. "Can I help you?"
"Oh, Noah usually doesn't have his lights on at this time of night, I was worried something had happened." She eyed what she could see of me, half my body hidden by the door. "You don't look like anyone I know."
"No, I wouldn't be" I shook my head. "I'm Noah's niece, I just flew here and I wanted to surprise him but my flight was later than I thought it would be, sorry if we woke you."
She didn't look convinced. "Maybe I could speak to him, that would probably be better."
"I'm sorry but no, He's very tired and I feel bad for waking him." I tried to be firm and kind at the same time.
The woman actually tried to force her way inside.
"Ma'am if you do not get off our property, I'm going to call the police." I warned, struggling against her. I can't believe she was actually trying to break into the house.
"No I'm calling the police. Noah doesn't have any nieces and I didn't see any cars here." She shouted through the doorway.
Feeling as though enough was enough, I managed to grab my gun with its silencer attached.
No, she's a little pushy but she's an innocent.
I was a killer but I wasn't cruel.
"Good night Ma'am" I finally got the door to shut, locking it just in time for her to try the doorknob. I waited until I heard her stomp away before going back upstairs and rejoining my crew. "You have a very persistent neighbor" I huffed, allowing Max to help me out my gear back on. "Now where were we? Ah." I took Max's sword, walking toward the barely conscious Wintergreen. "This is for Nightwing" then I ran my blade through his dark heart.
