Don't fight it, it's coming for you, running at ya

It's only this moment, don't care what comes after

Your fever dream, can't you see it getting closer

Just surrender 'cause you feel the feeling taking over

It's fire, it's freedom, it's flooding open

Note: it's Harumi time

The people of Ninjago were celebrating the New Year, as they set off fireworks and wore colourful masks, while others beat drums.

Amidst the colourful chaos, a mysterious figure with a green mask and twin red swords on their back made their way through the crowd, meeting with another one that looked like them but with a red mask.

The two made their way into an alleyway and ran until they stopped, meeting with more that had masks, but with colours that seemed to represent the power rangers, or rather, the ninja.

The group then looked up at Borg Tower and began to make their way up to it, scaling walls, a 3D neon sign, and going down a zipline.

When they almost there they were at the highway, waiting for the moment it would be safe to cross, before one pulled out a grappling hook and threw it to Green Mask.

Green Mask set their sights on Borg Tower, carefully aiming it before pulling the trigger, and the Power Rangers 2.0 went up, following their leader.

Their leader took out one of their red swords and carved a circle into the glass, then two grabbed it before it hit the ground and moved it aside, before going into the tower.

The masks searched the room of relics, though they didn't find what they were looking for until Orange Mask's gaze landed on a portrait of Cyrus Borg. Green Mask glanced at them before they too saw it, walking over to it and unsheathing one of their red swords.

Green Mask then sliced it, and there it was, a red mask with the face of a demon, with yellow eyes and yellow teeth.

White Mask moved forward to grab it but Green Mask grabbed their arm, spraying a sort of mist to reveal the lasers that were there to protect it.

The Mean Green Machine then unsheathed both of their swords, carefully placing them so the lasers were reflected off it, and took the mask out of its place, showing it to the others so they could see.

White Mask once again did something they should not have, as they removed the red swords, activating the alarm. The room began lockdown, and Green Mask grabbed their swords, the group quickly made it out of there, although Blue Mask almost didn't.

As they looked from the balcony, they heard a sound. There was a flash of green light, and then another, as Blue Mask was wildly spun around.

''Nice masks.''

Then Blue Mask was pushed to the ground.

''Hyah.'' And there he was, the Green Ninja. ''You could almost pass as ninja.''

He beckoned them to fight and so Green Mask pushed Black Mask towards him, using them as a distraction so their leader could get the zipline.

The Green Ninja fought them, with the Indigo Mask doing most of the work. Lloyd then swept into spinjitzu, finishing most of them off.

Orange Mask and Green Mask went down the zipline, as well as White Mask, and the Green Bean followed, grabbing the line with a single gloved hand.

Though when Green Mask and Orange Mask were at the end of the line, the Mean Green Bean Machine cut the line with a sweep of their sword, making White Mask fall and probably die if the Green Ninja hadn't swooped in like Tarzan in time to save them, placing them at the mercy of the police once they touched solid ground.

The Green Mask landed on the highway, while Orange Mask seemed to have disappeared. That didn't matter now, as Green Mask removed their mask, to reveal yet another mask, though it was a bikers helmet that obscured most of their face, only showing their red glowing eyes.

They rode on a bike, while Lloyd swung on the rope. ''Pixal, I need my car.'' He told the female nindroid.

''Your coordinates, Master Lloyd?'' Pixal questioned.

''Somewhere over...You know how to find me.'' Green Bean answered, letting go of the rope to fall. As he got closer to the ground, his eyes narrowed, hoping it would come in time so he wouldn't become a green smear on the road.

An engine revved as his car appeared, catching him mid-air. The Green Ninja then allowed himself a moment to stop. ''Haha. I could kiss you, Pix.''

''I don't think Zane nor (Y/n) would approve.''

He then sped off in the direction of the leader, maneuvering around cars and quickly catching up.

''Who am I chasing?'' Lloyd inquired.

''He or she is not in our database,'' Pixal answered.

''Whoever they are, they're good. I need backup.''

''All of the others are on active missions throughout Ninjago. You are on your own.''

The Green Ninja glanced at the map, only seeing seven dots. He frowned, not thinking much of it before he turned his mind back to the chase.

The mysterious one in the biker mask suddenly braked, and Lloyd swung his vehicle around to face them, stopping as well.

Lloyd revved his engine, while they did the same.

Tires squealed as the mysterious one suddenly moved forward, and the Green Ninja put the pedal to the metal. Then, a sort of metal arm moved on the mysterious one's bike, and they readied themselves.

Then, the contraption slammed into the ground, making the bike fly into the air. In slow motion, the mysterious one grabbed the red mask and leapt off the bike, the Green Ninja getting out of his vehicle in time to see as they activated a parachute, that had a logo with a familiar face featured on it.

Garmadon.

The Green Ninja watched as a boat came through the canal below the bridge, with Orange Mask steering it, and Green Mask landed in the boat.

''Master Lloyd, are you all right? Are you there?'' Pixal asked, concerned.

''Yeah, I'm here. It's time to get the team back.'' The Green Ninja replied.

---

Villagers groaned as they were forced to work in a rice field under the blistering heat of the sun.

''Uhh. The sun is blistering. Faster!'' Ordered a samurai.

''You heard your master. Work!'' A second samurai added, snapping his whip midair as a warning.

''Heh. You there, peasant.'' The first samurai said, noticing someone who carried two buckets filled with water on each side of a bamboo stick. ''Bring me water. You hear me? Bring me some water!'' He commanded.

''Thirsty?'' Nya asked with a smirk.

The third samurai, the coward of the trio gasped. ''It's—''

''The Master of Water, Nya!'' The second one exclaimed.

''I don't care. Get her!''

The Water Ninja used her bamboo stick to defend herself, knocking the two samurai to the ground.

The first then charged at her, yelling his battle cry, though Nya was quick to hit him back, almost into the pond.

She then dropped the bamboo stick with the buckets, and the water floated into the air, and then she directed it at the first samurai, who was then knocked into the pond.

''Still thirsty?'' The Water Ninja asked.

The Samurai were then stuck in the pond, the villagers cheering for their female saviour. Something beeped, and Nya quickly went away.

---

Two figures entered an ancient temple, one clothed in black while the other was clothed in blue. They rolled in, before closing the door behind them, struggling to do so.

''Cole, you're my friend, but right now you're my worst enemy. You have no idea how time travel works.'' The one in blue told the one in black.

''If someone goes back in time and alters the past, our reality as we know it would change. We could look totally different and not even know it.'' Cole replied, and took his mask off, to reveal his slightly longer shaggy black hair, along with his chocolate-brown eyes.

''But we don't,'' Jay told him, taking off his mask to reveal a freckled face with brown hair and electrifying blue eyes. ''Thus, Master Wu must have slipped into a time stream into the future.'' He theorised.

''Whenever he is, it's been a year. It's time we find him.'' Cake Devourer said, and walked up to a monk. ''Uh, hi. Sorry to bother you. Cole, Master of Earth. Uh, this is Jay, Master of Blabber.'' He introduced himself and Jay, who posed as he was introduced.

''Lightning.'' Freckle Face scolded Cole.

''We heard that an old man who lost his memory wandered in from the cold. About so high, long beard, drinks a lot of tea.'' Cake Devourer informed the monk, using gestures to explain, while behind him, Jay copied his movements. The monk didn't reply.

''I told you not to introduce yourself as the Master of Earth. No one knows what that means.'' Jaybird told him.

''No, you bolthead. Everyone here took a vow of silence.'' Cole replied.

''Can you point us to him!?'' Jay asked a monk, yelling. The monk then pointed. ''Thank you! I-I like your place!'' He told the monk, who glared at him.

The two then spotted a man who seemed to resemble Wu, though their back faced the pair. ''Wait. If it's him, and he lost his memory, don't remind him of that stupid TV show I once hosted, okay?''

''Uh. Master Wu?'' The Earth Ninja questioned nervously. The old man then stood up and turned around, but it wasn't the Tea-Obsessed Man, only an old guy with a dark grey beard.

''Oh, come on. We came all this way, and it's not him?'' Jay asked, disappointed. ''Aw, th-that's it. I quit.''

''I'm tired of losing people in my life. Wu would never quit on us, and we're not quitting on him.'' Cole told the Lightning Ninja as he began to make his way back outside.

''If he's really still out there, couldn't he at least send a letter from the future? Or leave a message to stand the test of time? He's wise. He'd find a way.'' Jay replied.

''We just have to keep looking.''

''Yeah, you do that. And while you're at it, I'll be doing something more useful, like being a Ninja.'' The Lightning Ninja told him, starting to raise his voice.

''Ha! Some Ninja you are. You talk more than you fight.''

''At least I'm entertaining. All you do is judge and act like you know everything!'' Jay argued.

''Would you stop fighting!?'' A monk spoke, shouting. He then gasped and covered his mouth.

''Way to break your vow.'' Spoke another, who also gasped. ''Oh, no, I spoke too!''

''Haha! I knew you didn't have it in you.'' A third monk told the other two.

''I've been holding this in, but I just want to say I hate doing your dishes!'' A fourth yelled.

''Well, if everyone is doing it, I'm doing it too.'' A fifth spoke, and the monks continued arguing, headed towards the Bruise Boys.

Then, the Lightning Ninja's communication device beeped, and the two took it as their cue to leave. ''That's our cue. Got to run!''

---

''Orange Peel, wake up!''

(Y/n) awoke to the sounds of barking and meowing, and found herself on the carpeted floor of the pet shelter. She didn't remember coming into the place, but her eyelids felt heavy as they yearned for sleep.

It wasn't a good idea to stay up late last night, the sounds of the fireworks echoing in her head. Slowly, she got up, to be met with her mother, and Terry.

''What were you doing last night?''

Uh oh.

''I uh, had a mission with the ninja?''

While her mother frowned at the answer in doubt, (Y/n) looked around at the shelter. Terry had left her mother's side to play with a spiky bundle.

''His name is Sonic, Sonic the Hedgehog,'' Terry introduced, gently pushing the hedgehog towards the girl.

The Master of Time/Illusion chuckled. ''Do you still have that injured bald eagle named Egghead?''

Terry nodded, grinning.

Sonic sniffed the air, slowly padding towards (Y/n), who was silent. Then, a beeping was heard, scaring the spiky bundle away.

''Aw man, I wanted to finish my ham sandwich.'' Remo groaned, on a table beside the Ham Sandwich Maker, a plate in front of him with an almost eaten sandwich.

''Well, see ya.'' (Y/n) said, standing up. She now wore metal wristguards which only glowed blue when her slow-mo power was in use. They helped control her power so it wouldn't be as much as a problem. It was also a gift from Borg as an apology for the Ham Sandwich Maker being so late to arrive.

''Go and hug your mother,'' Terry told her, making the Orange Ninja groan and do so.

''You sound like my stepdad.'' (Y/n) then waved goodbye, with Remo appearing on her shoulders and disappeared out the door.

Her mother then spotted an orange mask laying on the ground and picked it up, furrowing her brows in thought.

---

A while later, the Ninja eventually grouped up at Borg Tower, gathered in the room where the masked figures had been. Lloyd then walked in, a smile on his face.

''Hey, there he is. You're late.'' Kai told the Green Ninja, making the other's attention turn to him.

''Kai was late too, if it is any consolation,'' Zane replied.

''Thanks for meeting me here. It's been a while since we've all been under one roof.'' Lloyd spoke, his voice now deeper making Nya giggle while Cole playfully nudged Jay. ''What?''

''Are we gonna talk about it?'' Jay questioned.

''Talk about what?'' Green Bean asked, confused.

''Your voice, it's—'' Cole answered, thinking.

''Lower.'' Zane cut in, setting his voice module lower.

''Deeper, you mean.'' (Y/n) replied, crossing her arms while smiling. Her hair was longer/shorter and she looked a bit older and more mature. Remo nodded in agreement.

''Reminds me of that time when Morro possessed Lloyd-'' Jaybird said, making the others look at him. ''He's hit puberty now.''

''Puberty hit him like a truck,'' Morro spoke. His hair was longer, like way past his shoulders, though it still retained its green streak, making him look like an emo version of Rapunzel.

''Sounds like our little Ninja's growing up,'' Kai said, laughing a bit.

''Leave him alone.'' Tall Glass O' Water told her brother, sighing. ''Any word from your mother?''

''Not since she went searching for Master Wu. I don't know where she is.'' Lloyd replied, sounding sad.

''She'll come back, Lloyd. And so will Wu.'' Cake Devourer reassured him.

''Not everyone comes back, Cole. But that isn't why I called you here. I called you because of this.'' Green Bean told them, showing the logo he saw on the parachute.

''Your father? Lord Garmadon?'' Cole asked.

''After poking around, I've learned it's the symbol to—'' Lloyd answered.

''The Sons of Garmadon. A mysterious criminal syndicate growing prominent in Ninjago City.'' Zane interrupted.

''Seventy-two hours ago, they stole a powerful relic from Cyrus Borg. Some mask—''

''Not "some" mask. The Oni Mask. There are only three in existence.'' A new voice cut in, and the ninja turned to see a dude with an eyepatch over his left eye. He wore a lot of green.

''Whoa, I'm confused. How can there be three masks when you just said it's the only mask?'' Jay asked.

''Not "only," Jay. "Oni."'' Nya clarified for the Lightning Ninja.

''The Oni are said to be all-powerful beings. Demons that predate Ninjago.'' Zane informed Freckle Face.

''Each mask embodies one of the three Oni warlords. If all three masks are united, whomever owns them will wield tremendous power.'' The guy told the assembled ninja.

''Ninja, this is Mr Hutchins. Master at Arms and Counsel to the Royal Family. I've asked him here.'' The Green Bean introduced.

''The Royal Family?'' Kai questioned, confused.

''Apologies if you aren't familiar. They honour their privacy, as they do the safety of Ninjago.'' Hutchins answered.

''Let me guess, they have an Oni Mask too.'' Cole guessed.

''Two? Now there's two?'' Jay questioned, and (Y/n) covered his mouth.

''The Emperor will be delivering a public speech tomorrow, and I'm worried the Sons of Garmadon may try to steal the mask. We could use your assistance, that is, if you can keep a low profile.'' Hutchins informed the team.

''We are Ninja. No one will know we are there.'' Zane replied, changing his titanium form to look more ''normal''.

''Just let us know where and when.'' The Green Ninja added, bowing.

---

While the Emperor delivered his speech, the ninja hid, watching the crowd closely for signs of danger.

''As many of you know, my family has kept a private life. We aren't interested in meddling with current affairs. But as crime has risen, so has our concern. So it is time to step out of the shadows, and into the light.''

''I don't like this one bit. If the Royal Family likes their privacy, why give such a public speech?'' Nya asked the others via the communication devices as she walked through the crowd in casual clothes.

''I think it's nice. They're reaching out to the people.'' Jay replied the others on the rooftops wearing their ninja gis as they watched the crowd.

''Why all the hate, sis?'' Kai asked his sister. ''You just don't like getting gussied up.''

''All that gold and glitter is for show. The Royal Family are figureheads. They don't have any real power, what purpose do they have?'' The Water Ninja questioned.

''Their purpose is to be protected, as do all of our traditions. I believe Master Lloyd has spotted something of interest.'' Frosty the Ice Ninja told the others, and they spotted Lloyd staring at the Princess.

''Looks like he's got an eye for the Princess,'' Kai said with a grin beneath his mask, looking over at (Y/n) who sighed and crossed her arms.

''I guess green is her favourite colour,'' Jaybird added.

''Oh, you're just glad there's gonna be less competition,'' Morro told the two, rolling his eyes.

''You do know I can hear you, right?'' The Green Bean questioned.

''We must continue to be vigilant...''

''The Emperor is almost finished. Let's just do our job.'' Lloyd finished.

''...and always stay united.'' The crowd cheered as the Emperor finished his speech.

''Be on the lookout.'' Green Machine told the others, before spotting a balloon with the Sons of Garmadon logo. ''I see a—'' There were popping sounds and the crowd panicked, scattering.

Lloyd then tackled the Princess and Empress to the ground while Hutchins did the same for the Emperor. ''Is the threat clear?'' He asked, and Nya found it was only firecrackers going off.

''Huh. Firecrackers. False alarm.'' The Water Ninja informed the others.

''You protected the Royal Family. You have their gratitude. You are invited to be their guests in the palace.'' Hutchins told the ninja.

''Heh. No one ever gets invited into the palace. Are you sure they meant us?'' Jay asked the others.

''Yes, of course, Jay they meant us.'' (Y/n) deadpanned.

''It's just a palace. Once you've seen one, you've seen them all.'' Nya replied.

''We'd be honoured.'' The Green Ninja told Hutchins, bowing.

---

Later that night, the ninja stopped at the gate of the Palace of Secrets.

''Welcome to the Royal Palace, also known as the Palace of Secrets.'' Hutchins greeted the group as he opened it, letting them inside.

''Ooh, why do they call it the Palace of Secrets?'' Kai questioned, curious.

''If I were to tell you that, then it wouldn't be a secret now, would it?'' Hutchins asked, closing the gate.

The ninja except for Nya and (Y/n) gasped in awe, gazing around at the decor of the palace.

''Look at that.''

''I already feel royal.''

''It's beautiful.''

''Amazing.''

''Yeah, I could really get used to living in a place like this.''

''Well, don't. We're only here as guests, then back to protecting Ninjago.'' Lloyd told the others.

''Hmph. Too much gold in my opinion.'' Nya replied.

''I guess it's fine, but if there's food I'll give it a better rating.'' (Y/n) said, and Remo nodded in agreement.

Hutchins opened the door to the Throne Room. ''I present to you the exalted Emperor and Empress of Ninjago, and their daughter, the Jade Princess, Princess Harumi.''

All of the ninja save for Nya bowed, and Lloyd nudged her, and she reluctantly did the same.

''We are honoured by your presence.'' The Emperor told them.

''The honour is all ours,'' Lloyd replied.

''I have read much about you. Your heroics will surely become legend. Kai, the hothead who acts without question. Cole, the rock and foundation of the team. Jay, the joker whose mouth is as fast as lightning. Zane, the cold and calculating android.'' Harumi addressed the group of ninja.

''Nindroid, your highness.'' Frosty the Ice Ninja politely corrected, reverting himself to his nindroid form.

''And Nya, the girl.'' The Water Ninja looked at her, disappointed. ''The girl I've wanted to be ever since I first heard about her. With her mastery of Water and her skill that could rival any master.''

''I like her,'' Nya said, slightly nudging (Y/n). She then turned her gaze to the Orange Ninja. ''But not as much as I love you, cutie.'' She said in a whisper she hoped Harumi wouldn't hear. (Y/n) blushed, trying to keep her composure.

''And Master Lloyd, the Green Ninja. The youngest but most powerful protector. One of the two chosen ones. I too have lost my parents...'' Harumi told Green Bean.

''Uh, heh?'' Jay said awkwardly.

''...but we're both without family, hm?'' Princess Pasta Hair questioned. She then turned to (Y/n) and Morro.

''(Y/n), the second Chosen One, the caring and kind one of the group.''

''Morro, the reformed Indigo ninja, who has had a terrible past and is trying to make up for his misdeeds.''

''And I couldn't forget Remo, the king of all ham sandwiches,'' Harumi added, looking to the silver snake who beamed as she addressed him.

''We adopted Harumi and raised her as our own.'' The Empress explained once Harumi was done. Jay looked at the Emperor and Empress in confusion.

''When her parents passed away.'' The Emperor added.

''Thank you for inviting us into your home.'' Lloyd thanked them.

''It wasn't us. It was our daughter.'' The Emperor replied.

''And she would like you to stay with us, until the threat to our throne is over.'' The Empress told them.

''These are troubling times, and as long as we have an Oni Mask, we fear our lives are in jeopardy.'' The Emperor added.

''The masks must never be reunited. Please say yes.'' Harumi begged.

Everyone looked at Lloyd, waiting for his response.

The Green Bean bowed once again. ''Then you have our help.''

''Great. Then Mr. Hutchins can show you the palace.'' Princess Pasta Hair told the group.

''Yes!'' Cole said with a smile.

---

''While you are in our service, you have full access to the complimentary royal buffet. Anything you want is at your disposal. Exotic fruits, assorted vegetables, scones, and all-you-can-eat cake.'' Hutchins said, gesturing to a table laden with all sorts of food, including ham sandwiches. Remo's eyes brightened at the sight of the love of his life.

''Ah, thank you, but I gave up sweets. My body is a temple.'' Cole replied, making Morro gasp, looking betrayed.

''Who are you and what have you done with Cole Brookstone?'' The Master of Wind questioned.

''Ever since Master Wu went missing, Cole has been a real party pooper,'' Jay replied.

''Party pooper?'' Zane inquired to Freckle Face, confused.

''I'll explain later,'' Jay whispered to the nindroid.

''The palace is equipped with secret passages to get anywhere fast,'' Hutchins told the ninja team.

''Oh, so that's why they call it the Palace of Secrets.'' Burnt Toast replied, his gaze landing on a bookshelf.

''Yes, but as to the locations of these secret passages, only the Royal Family knows,'' Hutchins informed him.

''Sure. You mean like right...here?'' Kai said, and pulled out a book from the bookshelf, but nothing happened.

''Nope.''

The Fire Ninja then pulled out the books from the bookshelf, hoping to trigger a secret passage, though the only thing he triggered was (Y/n)'s annoyance.

''Uh, haha. We'll clean up after ourselves.'' Cole told the guard after the Fire Ninja was finished. The Orange Ninja sighed, putting a hand to her forehead.

Hutchins then walked away, leaving the group alone.

''Anyone else think there's something a little off about this guy?'' Nya questioned the others.

''He's holding something back.'' The Green Ninja answered.

''Maybe, but perhaps his intentions are for the good of the Royal Family.'' (Y/n) reasoned.

''Well, let's wait and see. Also, we should catch up to him.'' Morro replied.

The ninja then caught up to him. ''And finally, the reason for your protection: the Mask of Deception,'' Hutchins said, pointing to an orange coloured demon faced mask in a glass case.

''Ugh. A face only a mother could love. Why would anyone want that?'' The Fire Ninja asked, gazing at it.

''That's up to us to figure out,'' Lloyd answered.

''Just being in the same room with it gives me the heebie-jeebies,'' Jay replied.

''If this is the Mask of Deception, what was stolen from Borg Industries?'' Tall Glass O' Water inquired, turning to Hutchins.

''The Mask of Vengeance,'' Hutchins answered.

''And who has the third one?'' Cole questioned.

''No one knows the location of the Mask of Hatred, but my sensors tell me it won't be lost for long.'' Frosty the Ice Ninja informed.

''Zane is correct. Though no one has found the third mask, it is given the Royal Family little resolve...'' As Hutchins spoke, the Green Bean wandered off. ''...for we know dark forces are looking to acquire it. And that's why we need eyes on it at all times.''

''Don't worry, we're Ninja. We're experts at this kind of thing.'' Kai reassured him.

---

Kai and Nya were on the rooftop of the Palace of Secrets, keeping a lookout for any suspicious activity.

''All clear,'' Nya told her brother.

''Here too. Wait, look!'' Kai replied, spotting Hutchins, but when he saw them, he went back inside.

''Who's watching who?'' The Water Ninja asked.

---

Jay and Remo dug into the food, stuffing their mouths full of food.

''Mm. Mm. Are you sure you don't want any? This cake is delicious.'' The Lightning Ninja offered to the Earth Ninja, who for a moment was tempted by the cake.

''Ah. My body is a temple.'' Cole reminded himself.

''Are you sure you wanna refuse?'' Remo questioned, poking his head out from the ham sandwich fort he had made. ''It's sooo good!''

(Y/n) was having some (f/f), sighing in content as she finished it. ''He's right, you know.''

Jay shoved more food into his mouth. ''Well, the buffet is clear of any threats. And they're out of baloney.''

''Can we discuss now what is a "party pooper?"'' Zane asked the coal-haired ninja.

Cole groaned. ''Jay's upset I'm the responsible one. With Master Wu gone, someone has to keep us in check.''

''In that case, you are correct. You are responsible. It is nice to have a pooper at the party.'' The nindroid said. Jay laughed, but Cole groaned as the Lightning Ninja used him to steady himself as he laughed.

''Hey Morro, let's have an eating contest!''

---

(Y/n) wandered around the Palace, when she heard glass break and saw Lloyd slowly walk toward Princess Pasta Hair's room, and went into it.

When she followed, she found that the room was empty, the contents of the room were scattered in a haphazard manner. A window was open, letting the cool breeze in.

Harumi and Lloyd were gone.

Any theories?

Also, I have hidden a lot of foreshadowing in the previous chapters :3
