Offenders (19)

“Could you, maybe, get out of my way?”

I turned my head to see who was talking to me, and I wasn’t surprised when I saw that it was Vanessa. Kristie and I continued to jog around the track, but this just wasn’t fast enough for Vanessa.

I moved out of the way so she and her friends could run by, and I bit down on my tongue to stop myself from saying that there was plenty of track she could have used to go around us, but I felt like saying that would not have been the best idea. I’d rather just ignore her completely.

Gym was actually much easier than people said it would be, but I guess that should have been pretty obvious considering all the training and exercising I did at the DAU. It still didn’t mean I liked changing in the locker room, though.

“So, who are you going to the dance with?” Kristie asked as we continued to jog.

I shrugged. “I don’t know,” I answered. “I may not even go.”

This almost made Kristie trip over her own feet. “You may not go?” she nearly screamed, looking offended by what I had just said to her. “What do you mean, you may not go?”

I didn’t really know what I was supposed to say to her considering she had only repeated what I had just said. It wasn’t my fault I hadn’t been asked by hundreds of guys like she had.

“I don’t think dances are really my type of thing,” was how I answered her, since it made me feel a little better about not being asked a bunch like she had.

Lynx ran by us then, and I bit down on my lip because the last thing I wanted was for her to hear us. She was beautiful, so I was sure she’d been asked by a ton of guys as well. Definitely not as many as Kristie, but still plenty.

I was glad when we were finally let back inside the locker room once the run was over. Lunch was next, and I was starving.

Once we were inside the locker room, Kristie started off toward the showers with her soap and shampoo as I made my way toward my locker. It was optional to take a shower after gym, and since I was just going to go home in a few hours to work out even more, I chose not to take a shower, since I never sweat that much during the class anyway.

I took my time to change, since I knew there was no point in dressing quickly because I still wouldn’t be able to make it to the lunch line in time to beat the crowds, especially since I was going to wait for Kristie. So I might as well take my time.

After her shower, Kristie was walking back toward her locker next to mine, a towel wrapped around her body while she used another towel to dry her hair. We were the only ones left in our row of lockers. I thought nothing of this until she removed the towel on her head.

I gasped when I saw her. “Kristie! Your hair!”

“What?” she asked, reaching for a wet strand. “What’s wrong with it?”

I didn’t know what I was supposed to say. Her shiny red hair was now neon blue. Dye ran down her shoulders and stained both of her towels. I just kept staring, dumbstruck.

“Um, get dressed,” I advised, still unable to look away from what had happened to her hair. “Get dressed and then go to the mirrors and look at yourself.”

Kristie gave me a look, but she did as I told her. Luckily, there weren’t many girls left in the locker room, and the few that were left weren’t anywhere near us that they could see. So she was safe… for now.

Kristie hurried off toward the bathroom where mirrors would be, and I was afraid of how she might have reacted. Her red hair was something I had always been jealous of, but now I was really glad that I didn’t have her hair.

I reached down and picked up the bottle of shampoo Kristie had used. I opened it and squeezed a little bit out into my hand. The normally clear liquid was now bright blue. I made a face and wiped the dye-invested muck onto the towel Kristie had left.

When I heard a laugh, I turned to see Lynx leaning against the locker across from mine, her arms crossed over her chest. “That’s a cute look for her,” she smirked.

I scowled at her. “What did you do?” I demanded.

Lynx batted her eyelashes innocently. “Whatever do you mean?”

“Don’t try to act dumb, Lynx,” I scowled. “I know it was you.”

The cat-like girl grinned at me. “Look at you, being a little detective,” she laughed. “Why is Anthony known as the genius of the team when you’re here?”

“I’m not in the mood for your crap, Lynx,” I told her, a look of disgust adorning my face. “Why did you do that to Kristie?”

Lynx shrugged, as if what she had done was no big deal. I waited for her to respond, but she said nothing. I guess I shouldn’t have been surprised.

“I guess I should go apologize, huh?” Lynx questioned, but I was almost positive that the last thing she would ever do is apologize for something she did. It was most likely impossible for her to feel bad.

She turned away from me and started off toward the bathrooms where Kristie was, and even though I felt like I should have followed her, I stayed put. The last thing I wanted to do was deal with Lynx even more, and if she tried anything, I was right there. Kristie could take care of herself anyway.

But when I heard Kristie scream, I was caught so off guard that I fell over when I turned toward the source of the sound. Pushing myself up off the ground, I ran as quickly as I could, only to run into three other girls that had been frightened by the scream.

“What was that?” one of them asked me, as if I was somehow supposed to know the answer.
I gulped. “Um… spider,” I nearly coughed, that being the first thing that came to mind. “She must have seen a spider!”

“I hate spiders!” another one of the girls cried, taking a step back. Luckily, her friends were stepping back with her. “Will you go in and make sure she’s okay?”

My pleasure.

I nodded, and the three girls started off as quickly as their legs would carry them. I didn’t waste any more time and busted into the bathroom to a scene I did not expect to see.

There was Lynx, a pair of scissors in one hand and Kristie’s blue hand in the other. Strands were scattered all over the floor as Kristie stood there, her eyes wide in shock. The hair that had flown down her back almost to her waist was now up to her shoulders, still blue.

Kristie and I both didn’t know what we were supposed to do at first. Dyeing her hair blue was bad enough, but now she’d chopped over half of it off! Was there even a purpose for that, or did she just want to act like a bitch for no reason?

“Now it’s complete,” Lynx shrugged, tossing the hair she had cut off onto the floor as if it wasn’t important at all. “It’s such a nice look for you, Kristie.”

The beautiful girl’s brown eyes were round and filled with tears. Seeing her like this made me angry. She’d done absolutely nothing and Lynx had done something that upset her horribly. This didn’t even have anything to do with the DAU or Redrum!

“Do you want a haircut next, Violet?” Lynx asked with a wicked grin, waving the scissors around. “It’s free of charge!”

Without thinking twice about it, I raised my hand and threw the scissors right out of her grasp. They went flying, getting stuck right in the wall by the door. And when I heard a scream, I turned to see that it was only a few inches away from Vanessa’s head.

My eyes went wide when I saw her. My entire body went rigid. I suddenly felt like I was going to throw up. Had she seen what I’d just done?

“What the heck is wrong with you?” she screamed. “How did you even do that?”

I blinked. I couldn’t say anything.

“What, are you some kind of freak?” she shouted, and I found myself at a loss for words. “Are you trying to kill me?”

Kristie and I looked at each other in horror. What were we supposed to say? She’d seen what I had done.

“What even are you?” Vanessa continued with a scowl, taking a step toward me. I took a step back and ran into a sink. “Are you some sort of monster, freak?”

“I’m… I’m not a monster,” I gulped, mouth so dry it almost hurt. “I’m… I just… I…”

I didn’t know what I was supposed to do. Even if I knocked her out, there was no way Anthony would be able to come inside the girls’ locker room. I felt completely trapped. There was nothing I could do.

Before Vanessa could say anything else to me, Lynx was suddenly behind her and silenced her with a blow to the back of the head. Vanessa slumped to the tiled floor, unconscious.

“Why did you do that?” I demanded, honestly very confused at the fact that Lynx had jumped into action like that. “I thought Vanessa was your friend.”

“Friends aren’t something I need at this place,” Lynx sneered, rolling Vanessa over so she was now on her back. “And our secret is much more important than some friendship.”

For some reason, this reminded me of Tom. He’d also seen me use my powers, but we’d been in a place where he could be knocked out easily.

Pulling out my phone, I clicked down on Anthony’s contact and pressed the phone to my ear. I prayed silently that he would pick up.

“Hello?” he finally answered, sounding very confused. I let out a sigh of relief. “Violet?”

“You need to come to the girls’ locker room,” I informed him.

He was silent for only a moment. “What?”

“You need to come to the girls’ locker room,” I repeated. “You need to get here as quickly as possible.”

“Well, I can’t really just run through campus, Violet.”

“And why not? You’re most likely fast enough that no one would see you.”

Anthony didn’t try to argue with me, though I could tell he really wanted to. It was probably a regular guy’s dream to be able to go into the girls’ locker room, but Anthony wasn’t a regular guy. For many reasons.

I looked over to Kristie, who was still in shock. I didn’t blame her, since I was sure I’d feel the exact same way if my hair had been chopped off and turned blue. Even I knew how important hair was to girls.

I left the bathroom to make my way through the locker room to the front entrance to wait for Anthony. I expected him to get there quickly, since he had super speed and anything, but it took him a good three minutes to finally get there.

I was about to yell at him for not using his powers and taking so long, but then I saw the reason why he hadn’t. He was with Dex.

I made a face. “Why did you bring Dex?”

Dex looked at me flatly. “Hi, Violet. Nice to see you too.”

“I think you know better than anyone that you can’t tell Dex what to do,” Anthony informed me as I lead him toward the bathroom. “He wanted to come with me.”

Dex shrugged. “I thought you were in trouble.”

I bit down on the inside of my cheek. “Well,” I began as we entered the bathroom. “I kind of am.”

It took the two boys a moment to take in the scene. Lynx, leaning against a sink with her arms crossed. Kristie with blue, short hair while what had been cut off on the floor. And then an unconscious Vanessa in a slump at my feet.

Dex gave me a look. “What did you do?”

This annoyed me. “What did I do?” I snapped angrily. “I didn’t do anything! This is all Lynx’s fault!”

“On the contrary,” the cat girl began. “They would not be needed in this situation if it wasn’t for you, Violet.”

I knew there was no point in arguing with her, especially since it was true. I was stupid and used my powers in a public place.

Usually, I hated having gym before lunch because I was always late and the lines were ridiculously long. But now, I was glad, because no one would come inside the locker room for another thirty minutes.

“You need to erase Vanessa’s memory of the last ten minutes,” I ordered to Anthony. “She saw me use my powers.”

Anthony went straight to work. He made his way over to Vanessa and placed his hand on her forehead.

“So he’s the one on your team that can erase memories, huh?” Lynx observed, her arms still crossed uncaringly over her chest. “I guess I’m not that surprised.”

Dex ignored her and turned towards Kristie. “What’s up with your hair?”

I nearly face palmed at what Dex had said. He really had no idea how to talk to girls.

“It was Lynx’s bright idea of a prank,” I answered for Kristie, since I could tell she didn’t want to talk about it. I looked over at the hair on the floor. “And then some.”

“At least I wasn’t the one who used her powers in public,” Lynx snapped back at me, and I bit down on my lip to stop myself from barking at her. “So which one of us is really in the wrong here?”

I wasn’t in the mood to have this argument with her. Mostly because I knew she was right and what I had done was wrong.

“Alright,” Anthony called out when he was finished. “We’ve got to put her somewhere where she’ll look like she just fainted.”

Without even asking, Dex bent over and picked Vanessa up. I felt myself grow immediately annoyed. Just because he had super strength didn’t mean he had to be the one that picked her up. I could have used my powers… but then most likely drop her.

“Don’t carry her,” I found myself blurting, biting down on my lip when I realized what I’d just said. Dex looked back at me, concerned. “Um… I mean… Don’t drop her?”

Anthony patted me on the shoulder. “Sure you did.”

I glared at him as he walked by me to find a spot for Dex to put Vanessa. Kristie, Lynx, and I followed after them with me silently hoping Dex would drop her.

Anthony finally decided to leave Vanessa in front of her locker, as if she had suddenly fainted because of the run we had been doing during class. I honestly didn’t care where she was placed, just as long as Dex put her down.

Once she was finally on the floor, we all turned toward the door to leave. We stopped dead in our tracks, however, when the door opened to reveal four girls and a female gym teacher.

I quickly pushed Anthony away from the door. “Go through the back door! Hurry!” I hissed, pushing him harder so he would move. Without a second thought, he was out in a flash, and Dex quickly disappeared from sight.

We all started toward the back door, the girls and teacher not even noticing us as we slipped out. They would either find Vanessa or she would wake up on her own thinking she had fainted.

Anthony was waiting for us outside, and Dex reappeared. I let out a sigh of relief at the fact that that whole ordeal was over with and I had gotten out of it without having a breakdown.

I then remembered we had left the scissors and Kristie’s blue hair all over the floor of the bathroom. I knew that wouldn’t have been something we wanted people to find, so without even a word to my friends and Lynx, I hurried back inside the locker room and gave them a look that told them not to follow.

I quickly made my way into the bathroom, making sure to shut the door and lock it behind me. I then yanked the scissors from the wall and threw them into the trash. I then used my powers to pick the hair up and dump it in their as well. With one last look around the room to make sure everything was back to normal, I made my way back outside again to see the same four people waiting for me.

“Well,” was all I was able to say. “That was close.”

Lynx took a step toward me, and I quickly moved into a fighting stance because I believed she was about to attack me. Hadn’t she just said using our powers at school was a bad idea?

“Just because we worked together today doesn’t mean that it’s ever going to happen again,” Lynx warned with a glare directed at me. “Let’s not make a habit of this.”

I shrugged. “Sounds like a plan.”

Lynx spun away from me, her hair whipping me in the face as she left. She winked at Dex as she walked by.

I made a face. “That’s creepy every time.”

Lynx stopped when she got to Anthony. She smiled flirtatiously and placed her hand on his chest. My eyes widened in surprise at this sudden move by her, because it definitely wasn’t something I was expecting.

“You’re cute,” she smirked, and I was at a loss for words, along with Kristie and Dex. “And you’re ridiculously smart and can erase memories? You’re definitely a keeper.”

Lynx kissed his cheek and then continued on her way, leaving all of us in shock. Anthony turned noticeably red. My eyebrows furrowed in confusion. That was really weird.
