Offenders (13)
Saturday morning, Hank and Nay called us into the meeting room.
It wasn’t ridiculously early, but it was still too early for a Saturday morning. At least they’d called us in on a Saturday and not a school day. If I had to go to school after this like the last time they had called us for a meeting, I didn’t think I’d be able to make it.
Everyone seemed to be wide awake but me. I wasn’t exactly tired, just angry that I was being forced out of bed.
“Good morning,” Anthony greeted me with a laugh.
I grunted. “Morning."
Dex gave us a look. “It’s ten o’clock in the morning. Why are you so grumpy?”
“You’re one to talk when it comes to being grumpy,” Anthony commented with a smirk.
I rolled my eyes at the two of them. “I’m used to sleeping irregularly from when I was locked in my room,” I explained as we entered the meeting room. Aiden and Kristie were already there. “Old habits die hard.”
I looked around to see that Hank and Nay were both already inside the meeting room, waiting for us. I really hoped whatever they had to say to us was no very important so I could go back to sleep.
“Good morning,” Hank greeted, and I was the only one out of my teammates that didn’t say it back. Why did all our meetings have to be so early? Even if it wasn’t actually that early…
Nay smirked. “You all look so happy to be here.”
“Bright and chipper as always, aren’t you, Violet?” Hank grinned at me. “I see you’re not a morning person.”
I hated mornings. Mornings were awful. They were way too bright for me.
I shook my head. “Not at all.”
“So, why’d you call us in here, Nay?” Kristie questioned.
“Well, we’re aware of how much Aiden wants an other mission other than high school,” Nay informed us as I took a seat. The rest of my teammates stood. “So, we were wondering. Do any of you even want another mission right now?”
Aiden raised his hand. The rest of us didn’t even move.
“Come on,” our leader complained. “You guys don’t want to go on a real mission? High school is so boring!”
“I have a project to work on,” Anthony shrugged.
“I have homework to do,” Kristie explained.
“I’m tired,” I put in.
“I just don’t want to,” Dex informed uncaringly.
Aiden did not look happy that he was stuck with teammates that’d rather do school work than a real mission. But at least in high school, I knew we were safe. Well, as safe as we could be with Lynx and Malicius in the same building, but they’d surprisingly done nothing in the months we’d been there. That frightened me only slightly.
“Fine,” Aiden pouted, crossing his arms over his chest. “I guess we’re not going on a mission then.”
I shrugged. “Boo-hoo.”
Nay let out a sigh. “I guess you can go work on whatever schoolwork you have now.”
“I’m tired,” I yawned, standing up and stretching before turning toward the door to leave. “If you need me, don’t wake me up.”
I started toward the door, none of them stopping me from going anywhere. But before I could open it, however, someone was already coming inside. Without opening the door.
I screamed as half a body came phasing through the closed door. A pretty young woman with black hair smiled back at me. “Hello,” he greeted.
I didn’t know what I was supposed to say. Here I was, standing in front of someone who was half in the room and half in the hallway through the closed door. What was even going on?
“Our visitor has arrived,” Nay finally explained with a sigh. “Please, come in.”
The woman did as she was told, phasing the rest of the way through the door and passing by me to join my mentors and teammates. I continued to stand in my spot, speechless.
This woman was a superhuman, obviously. But she had been the visitor we had been waiting for? What was so special about her? Who was she?
Dex’s eyes were wide as he stared at this woman. She had the same hair, the same eyes. Was this woman… Was she somehow his…?
“Look at you!” she squealed to the boy with super strength, running up to him and wrapping her arms around him without a second thought. “You’ve gotten so big! So, so big!”
My three other teammates and I looked at each other with confused looks. Who was this woman? And why was she so touchy-feely with Dex, the scariest guy in the room?
She now pulled away and reached up, pinching his cheeks. “Look at you! Still cute as a button!” She then started cooing and making baby noises as she continued to pinch.
Aiden started laughing like a hyena. Kristie bit down on her lip to stop herself from laughing. Anthony and I had no reaction at first, but then we looked at each other and immediately burst out laughing.
Dex pushed the woman’s hands off of him. “Is that really necessary?”
The woman laughed. “Maybe!”
“Dex,” I began once we’d all stopped laughing. He looked like he absolutely hated all of us. “Who is this woman?”
Dex glared at her as he answered, “This is my aunt. Unfortunately.”
My eyes widened. This was his aunt? Dex hadn’t ever mentioned her before.
“Aw, come on,” his supposed aunt laughed. “You love me and you know it! You just don’t want to admit it.”
Dex gave her a look. “I’m not so sure about that.”
I decided to see just how the two of them felt about each other. Even though he wouldn’t admit it, he truly did love the woman that was only a stranger to me. And she loved him just as much.
“Well, this is your team?” she smiled now as she looked at the rest of us. “And Hank and Nay are your mentors. That’s fantastic!”
It was pretty fantastic, having Hank and Nay as mentors. They weren’t particularly too strict, but it wasn’t like they were so laid-back that we never learned anything. They were a good mix together, and I was glad that they had such a good relationship together as well.
“Okay, let me guess who is who,” she smiled, and I realized that I still didn’t know what her name was. She pointed to Anthony. “This is Aiden, the leader.”
Aiden snorted from his spot on the other side of him.
“So this means you’re Anthony, the super smart one,” Dex’s aunt then said to Aiden, who seemed to have somewhat of an ego boost at someone thinking he was smart. Anthony was the one to snort now as this woman turned toward Kristie and said, “You’re Violet with the telekinesis.”
Kristie seemed almost proud of the fact that someone had mistaken her as me, but I just didn’t understand. How could someone get Kristie and me mixed up when they were aware of what our powers were? I think it’d be obvious who had the intense beauty.
“And you’re Kristie,” the woman finished as she pointed to me. “The one with shape shifting abilities and intense beauty. Definitely obvious with this one.”
I said nothing. Honestly, I didn’t want to correct her. My throat felt tight and I honestly had no idea what I was supposed to say.
Dex shook his head and let out a sigh. “You’ve got them all wrong.”
The woman seemed surprised. “What?”
“This guy right here is the smart one,” Dex explained, clapping a hand down on Anthony’s shoulder. “I felt like this one should have been obvious.”
His aunt made a face. “I didn’t want to go with the obvious. Super smart people don’t have to look like that, you know.”
“I agree,” Aiden said from the side, but no one paid any attention to it.
“This is Aiden, the leader,” Dex continued, only jabbing his thumb in the direction of the aforementioned boy. “You probably already know his powers, so there’s no point in telling you what they are.”
“Hmm,” his aunt hummed. “I guess I should have known. He looks just like his father.”
Aiden beamed at this. I wished I could have been happy for him, but I really couldn’t be. I wished I knew which one of my parents I looked most like. All I remember were blurry faces.
“This is Kristie, the one with the power of shape-shifting and intense beauty,” Dex explained as he gestured toward the redhead. He then gestured toward me. “And this is Violet, the one with telekinesis who is moderately attractive.”
“Moderately attractive?” I snapped, even though I wasn’t so sure it was an insult. It sure sounded like one.
“He’s only saying that because—” Anthony began, but then stopped when he saw the look Dex was giving him. His aunt saw the look as well, and she seemed to understand.
“Anyway,” Dex began now. “This is my aunt, Jeannette Wolff. She’s my dad’s sister.”
“You’ve never mentioned her before,” Kristie said to him, voicing a thought I had already had. “Why?”
Dex shrugged, uncaring as he always was. “I haven’t seen her since I was nine.”
“And you’ve gotten so big!” she continued to gush, and Dex shielded his face as she went in to pinch him again. “Look how big you are! You’re taller than me now! And you’re must be so strong now!”
Suddenly, Dex turned invisible and then reappeared on the other side of the room a few moments later. “I’ll only come back if you stop pinching me.”
Jeannette pinched her fingers together as if she had crab claws. “I can’t promise you anything.”
Dex scowled at his aunt, and I couldn’t help but smile. Were all families like this? I wish I could have remembered. I used to be apart of good foster homes, but they’d never felt complete. I’d never felt like I was truly apart of a family.
Dex looked over at me to see my smile slowly fade to a frown as I thought about my parents. His scowl then turned to a look of concern. Jeanette saw all of this and a look I couldn’t read adorned her face.
I shouldn’t have been thinking about my parents. I’d gone years without even giving them a thought. But now, seeing Dex with a family member that obviously loved him, I couldn’t help but feel sad.
Dex slowly made his way back over to us now that his aunt had put her hands down and she was obviously not going to pinch him any longer.
“You’ve got the same power as your mother also,” Jeanette smile at him when he finally got back to us. “I’m sure she would have loved that. I remember how upset she was when you were showing signs of super strength like your father.”
Dex frowned. “Yeah. Well…”
“Well, no more talk about depressing things!” She now turned toward Kristie and me. “Which one of these girls is your girlfriend?” she asked with a grin.
Dex quickly glanced at me and then looked away almost immediately. “Neither of them.”
Anthony snorted. “Though he definitely wishes one of them—”
“Keep talking and I’ll crush you like a grape.”
Anthony stopped talking, though Dex’s threat was not even to wipe that grin off his face.
“Well, I only came by to introduce myself,” Jeanette grinned as she looked from me to Dex. “I’ll come around every once in a while since I’m in the area, but I’ll let you get back to whatever you were doing beforehand!”
Dex let out a sigh of relief. “Thank you.”
She smirked at him before reaching up and pinching his cheeks again before he could get away. “I’ll see you soon, Dexy.”
Aiden snorted. Dex glared. Our leader stuck his tongue out at him.
“It was nice meeting all of you!” Jeannette said to as she started toward the door. “I’ll be back soon!”
She’d phased through the door before any of us could say our own goodbyes. It seemed like her power and her brother’s power had been completely different from each other. I wonder if that was because of their parents or if that was just how it happened.
It only seemed like seconds after Jeannette had left before Lena was suddenly barging in, the door barely able to open as she forced herself through.
She saw that Hank and Nay were there and stopped dead in her tracks. She only smiled sweetly at them. I couldn’t believe they couldn’t tell something was up just by that.
“How do you keep getting in here?” Anthony asked incredulously.
Lena scowled at him. “I have my ways.”
Nay let out a sigh as she started off toward the door, Hank following after her. “Well, Hank and I have some work to do so we can’t entertain you right now, Lena.”
“That’s fine,” the younger blonde waved away. “I was looking for Violet anyway.”
“Well, if that’s the case,” Aiden sighed, starting toward the door as well. “I guess I’ll go train a bit. You want to come, Kristie?”
The redhead giggled and followed after him, and I wasn’t very bothered by the fact that they were gone. I was pretty sure I already knew what Lena wanted to talk about.
“I got another one,” was all she said once our mentors and two other teammates were gone.
Anthony looked confused. “What are you talking about?” he asked.
“Another one,” she repeated, pulling something out of her pocket and unfolding it. This didn’t seem to help Anthony at all, but I wasn’t expecting it to. “I got another note yesterday but I couldn’t come over to show you. This time, it was in my locker.”
“You’re getting notes?” Anthony questioned.
“Yeah,” Lena answered, sounding breathless. “Someone’s been leaving them for me and I don’t know who. And they’re freaking weird.”
“Is this really that big of a deal, Lena?” Dex questioned, uncaring about anything that could have been said in that letter. “It’s a note. You have a secret admirer. The only problem is that you both aren’t in third grade.”
Lena scowled at the dark boy in front of us. “What would you know, Dex? No one finds you desirable anyway.”
“I beg to differ,” he snapped. “Especially since you tried so hard to get in my pants.”
“I did not try to get in your pants!” she nearly screamed. “I think it was more the other way around—”
“I can’t agree with you there—”
“Well, it’s the truth—”
“Will both of you just shut up?” I found myself shouting before Dex could interrupt her again. “Your lingering feelings or whatever is not what’s important right now!”
Lena continued to scowl at Dex. “There are no lingering feelings—”
“You sure about that, princess? Because I see your eyes wandering—”
“My eyes? How about we talk about your eyes when it comes to V—”
“My eyes don’t go anywhere they’re not supposed to!”
“I can’t help but disagree,” the blonde smiled, though it was mischievous and almost evil. “I’m much more aware of things than I let out. I feel so bad for her, though, because the way you look at her shouldn’t make her a virgin anymore.”
“You know what?” I finally shouted once again, hoping that they would finally stop arguing with each other if I was louder than before. “I’m getting tired of you yelling at each other! Shut up!”
“You sound like Dex,” Anthony muttered.
“Don’t you start!” I yelled back at him.
Lena rolled her eyes, handing the piece of paper to me. “It was in my locker,” she informed again. “He knows where my locker is. What else could he know? Would he know where my house is?”
“Don’t get ahead of yourself,” Dex sighed, snatching the letter out of my hand before I could even read it. He skimmed over it. “Huh. Not very different from the last one.”
I grabbed the note back from him. “That’s all you have to say about it?”
Dex shrugged. “This doesn’t have anything to do with me. Anyway, it’s probably just some stupid joke. We shouldn’t be taking this seriously.”
“Haven’t you heard stalking stories before?” I snapped, angry that he was being so nonchalant about all of this. “People don’t take it seriously and then they end up getting hurt or killed!”
Dex rolled his eyes. “Yeah, but were any of those people superhuman?”
“You don’t know!”
“Of course I wouldn’t. I don’t pay attention to stupid stalking stories.” Dex took the note from me but I immediately grabbed it back from him. “The only time I’ve been kind of interesting in looking into a stalker story is when I saw my adoptive sister reading this book about a girl who went across the country to escape her stalker. It was based on a true story or whatever. She said it was an awful book, though, so I changed my mind.”
I’d read that book too, though I couldn’t remember any of the details. I wasn’t about to tell him that, though. It really was an awful book.
I then remembered the note in my hand that I hadn’t read yet. All Lena did was stare at the note over my shoulder, looking as if she had no idea what she was supposed to do or say. I looked down and read it.
Lena,
Hello, beautiful. You looked just as good as ever today. I wish you could say the same to me. But you don’t even know who I am. One day, you’ll know who I am.
“Lena,” I said once I had finished reading it. “You’ve got to do something about this. It’s creepy!”
“I know it’s creepy,” she snapped, grabbing it from me and crumpling it up. “Do you think I’d be acting this way if it wasn’t creepy? I don’t think I’d be showing it too you if it wasn’t creepy!”
Dex shot her a flat look. “I still don’t get why you’re acting like this. You could stab that guy with an icicle you’d make from your fist.”
“I’d like to see you get creepy notes from a stranger,” I scowled as I took the letter back from Lena and smoothed it out. “You wouldn’t be making all these comments if you knew what it was like.”
“Are you sure about that, darling?” he questioned as he looked over my shoulder to have another look at it. “Rude, conniving comments are my specialty in any situation.”
I moved the note away from him so he couldn’t read it again and make a comment. “I know.”
“Well, what am I supposed to do?” Lena asked when she saw that Dex and I were through arguing. “What if they just keep coming? Obviously ignoring it isn’t going to do anything!”
I looked over at Anthony. “You’re the super smart one. What’s she supposed to do?”
Anthony shrugged. “Tell an adult?”
“I can’t do that!” Lena practically shouted. “That never does any good! I don’t want too many people knowing that this is going on.”
I let out a sigh. “This may be serious, Lena.”
She shook her head. “Not serious enough that I’d have to tell my aunt or Hank or a teacher. I can take care of myself.”
“Said the girl that came running to the girl that can’t even control her powers,” Dex commented, and I elbowed him in the ribs as hard as I could. He barely flinched.
“I have better control over my powers than I did in the beginning,” I told him, even though I knew this wasn’t going to do any good.
He rolled his eyes at me. “You can barely hold your own in a fight unless it’s physical. You need to train more.”
I scowled at him. “I train all the time!”
“You’ve got to train with me more. I’ll show you what it’s like to really train.”
I couldn’t help but make a face. “I’m not so sure that’s an offer I’d like to take.”
“Do it,” Lena whispered, suddenly right beside me so only I could hear her. “You’ll get to see him all hot a sweaty. Do it.”
I nudged her away from me. “Get out of here.”
She shook her head. “Not unless you do it.”
“Do it?” Dex grinned. “I was just talking about training, but if you’d like to do something a little more R rated, Violet, I’m fine with that, too.”
Lena snickered and Anthony rolled his eyes. I felt my face heat up even though I didn’t want it to.
“I’m going to bed!” I shouted, having enough of my friends as I exited the meeting room and made my way back to my bedroom.
