Harry admires the golden band on his wedding finger. He imagines the wedding they'll have later down the road and replacing the engagement ring with a wedding ring. Harry doesn't think that being married to Sam will be any different than being his boyfriend, of course, it'll have a fancier title and Harry will go by 'Harry Mendoza' then, but they already act like a married couple half the time anyway.
Daisy sits in between Harry's legs on the couch and Butters, the cat, is curled up on the carpet in the middle of the room. It's Friday night and work has been long, Harry's grateful to be home. Sam has a candlelit in the corner of the room giving the space a clean and fresh smell. His fiance sits across from Harry on the couch.
Harry admires his boyfriend's beauty. Long eyelashes that curl just at the ends to show off his warm, coffee-colored eyes. Skin that could be considered a golden shade now, but pushing nearly almond-colored in the summers. Thin fingers with callouses on the ends of them from doing the heavy lifting around the house.
"I can feel you lookin' at me," Sam teases. Harry shrugs lazily and rubs a hand through Daisy's fur.
"You're my fiance, I'm allowed to admire you," Harry replies. Sam reaches a hand out and lays it gently across Harry's lower shin. Harry can feel Sam's thumb rub soothing circles over his skin.
"So, I was talkin' to your mom last month," Sam starts. Harry turns to him, having perked up at the sound of 'mom'. It's not that Sam doesn't like his mother, or that his mother doesn't like Sam, but that they don't talk. They don't go out of their way to talk to each other. Both are civil if they're in a room together and will converse politely. Sam isn't what Harry's mum wanted when she imagined who Harry would be with, and Harry knows that she holds a grudge over it. He's tried to talk to her in the past, but it never does anything.
There's also the thing about Harry not telling Sam about his past. His mother has been pushing him to tell Sam for years, but Harry isn't in the right place to do so. Keeping a secret like this from Sam is hard and he hates himself for it, however, having to come to terms with all those feelings and emotions are the last thing Harry wants to do. He's happily bottled everything up and placed it on a shelf that he doesn't intend on reaching for.
"That's... interesting. What were you talking about," Harry questions. He knows the answer before Sam says it. The only reason Sam and Anne would ever talk is if they were talking about Harry.
"You, Darlin'. I wanted to get you a little surprise engagement slash anniversary gift, so I asked your mom for some advice. That's when she told me about this little obsession you had when you were young," Sam explains. Harry doesn't like the way this sounds or the way it's going.
"Oh no," Harry laughs. He tries not to sound as worried as he is, but he can hardly convince himself.
"She told me that you were obsessed with One Direction, that boyband. Said that you had a fan account and talked about 'em all the time. So, I started lookin' up stuff about One Direction that I could get ya when I say that they were touring," Sam says.
Touring? That's the first Harry's heard of that. Of course, it's not like he keeps himself up to date on the matters of One Direction, but he heard about their break-up years ago. Right after Harry... left the band had announced that they were going on a hiatus until further notice.
"Thought they were on a break?"
"They were, but they're doing a reunion tour of some sort, I don't know all the details. All I know is that I looked into it and pulled some money together to get us tickets," Sam cheers. He stands up and dashes out of the room and comes back with two slips of paper.
They were printed off of a computer, but it was clear who the tickets were for and that they were paid in full. Harry's eyes flick across the paper, trying to gather any information he can. He sucks in a painful breath of air as he reads the paper. When he does, he looks back up to Sam, his heart falling through his chest and into his toes. He can't believe this.
"I wanted to surprise you and the meet and greet wasn't sold out yet. I figured you never really get to meet your childhood idols but once in your life, so I splurged a little. Don't try and convince me to sell 'em or anything because they're too much. I did this for you," Sam laughs. Sam climbs into Harry's lap and presses a kiss to his cheek, gently taking the papers back. He sets them on the side table and smiles at Harry again.
"You... you didn't have to do that, Sam. I... I mean this is... this is a lot of money," Harry sighs. He can't think of another argument against the tickets besides the price. Besides, what's the point of them spending all their money on a meet and greet when Harry's done more than greet and meet them in his lifetime.
"I wanted to do this. I like seeing you happy and I thought this would make you happy," Sam sighs. He must be able to see the look in Harry's eyes. Harry understands the gesture and if everything hadn't gone down, if Harry had never met him, then maybe Harry would be excited. Maybe Harry would've been able to kiss Sam and be excited for both of them. Not now.
"No, it was thoughtful of you. Thank you," Harry smiles. He presses a tender kiss to Sam's forehead and brings his fiance down to his chest, that way Sam doesn't see the tears swelling up in Harry's eyes.
