Harry buttons up the last few buttons of his shirt as he gets ready to go out for dinner. It's Sam and his fifteenth anniversary together. Neither of them can believe they've been together this long. On one hand, Harry feels like he's always been with Sam and that Sam has always been in his life. On the other hand, it feels like they just got together.
He runs a hand through his hair as his eyes flick over his appearance in the mirror. For a moment, his eyes land on his shirt. It's the only piece of clothing he has from before. It's a miracle that Harry still fits in it after twenty-five years, but Harry figures he'd still keep the shirt even if it didn't fit anymore.
The shirt is brown with orange flower prints over it. The Gucci shirt was the very first item he 'splurged' on after he got his very first check from his album. He had been there with Harry when he bought it and encouraged Harry to 'just get the damn thing'.
Honestly, the only reason Harry keeps the shirt is to remind him of what he's coming from. To remind Harry why he doesn't go back to it all. Almost a million times over the years Harry's almost left Sam and the house and went back to Los Angeles, but the shirt keeps him here. It reminds him that he's better now.
"I love that shirt on you," Sam sighs. Harry turns around and sees his boyfriend standing in the doorway, his arms crossed over his flannel shirt. Sam wears a pair of dark denim jeans and his nice cowboy boots. A cowboy hat that Harry had bought him a while back sits on top of his mop of black hair. He looks gorgeous.
Harry walks towards him with a sway in his hips. His black-polished hand reaches up and takes the hat off his boyfriend's head and sets it on his own. Before Harry can continue down the stairs, Sam wraps his arms around Harry's waist and pulls him close.
"I love you on our anniversary," Sam whispers. His voice sends shivers down Harry's spine. A gentle kiss presses itself below his ear.
"I'll love you even more over a basket of rolls," Harry teases. Sam laughs, a low hearty laugh, and lets go of Harry so they can walk to their car.
Sam turns the volume up on the radio as they drive to their favorite restaurant. A song slowly starts up as a piano plays an 'f' chord. The piano continues, cycling through three different chords, three of Harry's favorite chords. 'Just stop your crying it's a sign of the times.'
"I love this song," Sam cheers. Harry's never heard Sam say this before and he hasn't heard the song on the radio in years. Sam turns the volume up as the song continues, Harry's voice filling the rusty, green pick-up.
As the chorus starts Harry reaches over and turns it down a little. He hasn't told Sam about his past. He doesn't know that Harry recorded the song and has an album out. He has no clue that Harry dated... dated him or Taylor. He doesn't know about any of it and Harry plans on keeping it that way. He changed his name and he changes his life. The last thing Harry wants is to meddle the two lives together.
"Don't you love this song? When it first came out I cried like a baby because it was just so beautiful. Never really listened to the other stuff the guy put out, hell I'm not even sure I know who sings this. Never really heard anythin' else by him, must've been a one-hit-wonder or somethin'," Sam sighs. Harry can feel tears well up in his eyes, but he pushes them back down. He refuses to allow himself to get worked up over this.
They pull up to Texas Roadhouse just as the song ends. Harry couldn't be more thankful. He climbs out of the car as soon as Sam puts it in park and takes a moment to collect himself before joining Sam on the other side. Harry can tell by Sam's pinched eyebrows that he's noticed the change in Harry, but Harry also knows that Sam won't push him to say anything he doesn't want to.
"I'm fine," Harry assures him. Neither of them is convinced, but Sam pulls on a smile.
Dinner's great. Of course, it always is. Sam has just finished his steak and Harry is nearly through with his ribs when Sam reaches across the table and holds Harry's hand.
"I was sittin' on the couch a couple of days ago watching you. Something was on the TV, I think it was one of your shows. You were so invested in it you didn't even notice me looking at ya. Your tattoos were all out and those shorts you wear were danglin' low. I think it was about the hottest thing I've ever seen," Sam laughs. Harry smiles, knowing the day he was talking about. It was one of Harry's shows, a hospital show taking place in London. Sam was right, Harry had no clue he was looking at him.
"Well, I remember thinkin' then, 'Why haven't I married this guy already?'" Sam slips out of the booth seat easily. Harry straightens as he starts to realize what's going on. The people in the booth behind him have noticed too and are gushing as Sam sinks to one knee.
"We've been together for fifteen years and the last fifteen years have been the best years of my life. I really couldn't imagine spendin' my life with anyone else. Harry Twist, will you marry me," Sam asks.
Tears, good tears, flow in Harry's eyes as Sam stands up and wraps Harry in a hug. They've talked casually about getting married before, but this is different. This is the proposal. This is it. No one has ever made Harry as happy as Sam has made him. Harry cries into Sam's shoulder for a moment before pulling back and nodding.
"God yes," Harry breathes. Sam smiles and uses his thumb to wipe away the tears from Harry's eyes.
"We're getting hitched," Sam whispers. Harry laughs as Sam slides a simple gold band up Harry's lonely ring finger, a finger that Harry as kept empty for the past year in case Sam was to propose.
"We're getting hitched," Harry confirms.
