Chapter 3 - Getting Into Trouble
It's Wednesday, and I have now survived 3 days with Easton without going insane. I should get an award. It's 7 am, and I sit at the kitchen island eating breakfast. I bought 5 donuts on the way home from Candy's house last night, and I only ate three. So that leaves two donuts for breakfast. It's probably not the healthiest breakfast, but I don't care, it's just too delicious. Just as I was reaching toward the last donut, a big hand came flying from my left, grabbing it. I turned, gaping. Easton stood before me in ripped black jeans, a white T-shirt and a black leather jacket. He had tinted sunglasses on, hiding his beautiful eyes. He devoured the donut in just a few seconds and licked his fingers clean. My throat went dry, and I had to clear my throat.
"That was my donut!" I called out.
"Well, then you should have said something," Easton said, smirking.
"Are you ready to leave?" He asked me while picking my plate up from the table and putting it in the sink. Easton had been driving me to school every day since he got here. He had started to drop me off at the usual drop-off station now.
"Actually, Russ is taking me to school today," I replied.
Russ had texted me last night that he wanted to talk about what happened at school. I told him that I wasn't interested in listening to what he had to say and that we were over. But he was very persistent, asking for just 10 minutes of my time. He asked me if he could drive me to school so that we could talk in the car. I was hesitant at first, but he kept pleading, so I decided to hear what he had to say. I wasn't going to give in to him though, we were definitely over.
"Your boyfriend?" Easton asked and made a disgusted face. I don't know why since he hadn't even met Russ.
"It's complicated," I told him.
I jumped down from the kitchen chair and threw my backpack over my shoulder, ready to leave. I said goodbye to Easton and hurried outside. Russ wasn't here yet, so I'll have to wait. 15 minutes later, he still hadn't shown up. I glanced at my watch, only 10 minutes before my first class starts. Just as I was about to pick up my phone and call him, a black Mercedes with tinted windows pulled up beside me. The front seat window rolled down, and I could see Easton's face behind it.
"Get in the car." He instructed.
I checked the road back and forth a couple of times, in case Russ would show up. But no such luck.
"Get in the car, or you'll be late." He growled.
I sighed, knowing that if I didn't accept Easton's ride, I'd be late. I walked around the car, opened the passenger door, and slid inside. Easton pulled his sunglasses down and started his car. He glanced at me through the corner of his eyes. I hoped he wasn't going to say anything about Russ. Easton opened his mouth to speak, but I cut him off.
"Don't say a thing," I snapped and looked him straight in the eyes.
"I haven't said anything." He replied, looking back at the road again.
There was a pause, before he said, "What I don't get is -"
"I said don't say a thing!" I didn't care that I had raised my voice at him, I was in a bad mood today.
"Fine, whatever." Easton huffed, letting go of the subject.
"What music do you listen to?" He suddenly asked me.
I was surprised at his sudden change in the conversation. But I'd gladly talk about anything that wasn't about Russ.
"Uhm, a little of everything. I'm mostly into 80's rock" I answered him
"Really?" He looked surprised at that.
"Yeah, my favorite bands are Queen and Def Leppard."
"You're shitting me. I thought most of the girls your age are listening to Ariana Grande," he said.
"Well, I'm not like most girls" I answered.
"I'm starting to see that," He said
"What about you? What do you listen to?
"Same as you, a little bit of everything," He said, smiling.
We arrived 10 minutes later, if I hurried, I could make it to first class. I looked at Easton, and he looked at me. Suddenly I felt ashamed for being rude to him, it was kind of him to drive me. I was upset at Russ, I shouldn't have taken it out on Easton. I needed to apologize.
"Thanks for the ride. I'm sorry I was rude to you."
"No problem. I'll see you tonight, stay out of trouble."
━━━━━━━━━━━
I entered the classroom right before the teacher was about to close the door. The teacher gave me an annoyed look, and I quickly scanned the room for any available seats. I could either sit next to David, who had greasy hair, and picked his nose. Or, I could sit next to Melissa. I hadn't even begun listing the pros and cons before I heard Melissa yell, "Belle, over here!"
I took a deep breath and walked towards my friend. If she hadn't waved me over, I probably would have sat next to Dave. Melissa had changed a lot during the summer break, I can't say I'm a fan of her new personality.
"What's up?" She asked while popping the pink gum in her mouth.
I didn't answer and started to pull out my books from my bag.
"Why were you late? Did that cute guy drop you off again?" She said, giving me a wink.
"I wasn't late!" I snapped.
"Ooh, someone is in a mood today."
I shook my head at her, it was too early in the morning for this. I scanned the room and noticed that Russ wasn't in class. That's weird. Maybe he overslept? That would explain why he hadn't picked me up. I sent him a quick message, hoping it would wake him before I focused on what the teacher was saying.
━━━━━━━━━━━
One hour later, I was on my way to my locker. That's when I saw Russ standing outside the men's bathroom, texting. Huh, hadn't he seen my messages? I checked my phone and saw that I didn't have any new messages. I walked up to him and he snapped his head up while quickly putting his phone in his pocket.
"Hey, babe." He said as if everything was okay between us.
"Where were you this morning?" I asked while crossing my arms, making sure he knew I was upset.
He looked surprised at my question.
"What do you mean?" He asked.
Was he serious? Had he forgotten that he was supposed to pick me up today? We talked about it just last night.
"You were supposed to pick me up this morning. We were supposed to talk." I reminded him.
He let out a breath and rolled his eyes at me.
"You can't seriously expect me to remember every little thing I say to you." He huffed and then continued to check his phone like I wasn't even there.
I pulled back as if he'd just slapped me in the face. The last few days he had treated me like crap, even though he was the one who begged me to go out with him in the first place. I was fed up with his bullshit.
"Fine, then don't expect ME to be your girlfriend anymore." I snapped.
At that, I got his attention. He looked at me, confused.
"What?! Are you breaking up with me?"
"Yeah, I am." I said with confidence.
I smiled, it felt good to say those words. I started to walk away from him but he caught my arm.
"Let me go, Russ," I said, and pulled back my arm with such force that I almost stumbled backward. To my surprise, he let me go. I heard him yell after me that he was sorry and that he didn't mean what he'd said, but I just kept on walking.
━━━━━━━━━━━
I needed air. I shuffled through the crowd of people swarming around the corridor to get to the exit. Cold air swept through my face, and I took a deep breath. I had just broken up with my boyfriend, and it felt good. I should never have gone out with Russ in the first place, the warning signs were there, but I kept ignoring them. Russ was a player, I'm pretty sure he's been with half of the cheerleading squad. Probably more than half. Right now I was lucky I hadn't given up my virginity to him.
"Girl, are you okay?"
I turned around and saw Melissa standing behind me, looking worried. I hadn't realized I'd been hugging myself. It's because of the cold air, I told myself. The wind was making her short brown hair messy, she tried to get it under control but failed.
"I'm fine, just tired," I answered her, hoping she wouldn't push the subject. Luckily, she didn't.
"So, I was thinking that we could do something tonight, at your place." She asked me, looking hopeful. She hasn't asked me to hang out with her in months, and I wondered why she suddenly wanted to hang out with me. I wasn't in the mood to hang out with anyone tonight.
"I'm actually planning on doing homework."
"Oh my gosh, me too! How about we do it together?!"
I sighed. I was not in the mood to hang out with her today.
"Don't you have a party or something to go to?" I asked.
"Nope. Come on, it's been ages since we hung out just the two of us."
"I guess you're right," I said. It had been ages. I guess I would need a distraction tonight.
"Fine, we'll hang out," I said.
Melissa made a little happy dance and threw her arms around me. She smelled like cheap perfume, and I felt my nose itching.
"It's going to be so much fun!"
"Yeah, totally," I answered.
━━━━━━━━━━━
After school, Melissa followed me home. I didn't see Easton anywhere, which I was thankful for. We were sitting in my room on my big bed. I don't know about her, but I was actually serious about doing homework. I grabbed my backpack and started to get my books out.
"Should we get to work?" I asked.
"Yeah, one second!" She said and bent down to pick up her backpack. But instead of pulling out her books, she pulled out a wine bottle.
"What are you doing?" I asked her.
"I brought wine!" She beamed.
"You're crazy. Who drinks wine in the middle of a school week?"
"Lots of people do," She said and started to stand.
"Where are you going?" I asked.
"I'm gonna get some glasses, I'll be right back!"
She left before I was able to tell her that I didn't want to drink. I shouldn't have invited her here, this was a mistake. I would never get any work done, I knew it. She'd want to sit and drink wine and gossip about boys. My phone started to buzz in my pocket, and I took it out. Speaking of boys...
"What do you want, Russ?" I snapped.
"Hi... uh. I didn't think you'd answer. You've been avoiding my texts all day."
"I wonder why," I told him. I was so tempted to hang up the phone.
"Come on, you can't mean what you said today," he said in a quiet voice.
Oh, I definitely meant it.
"Can I come over so we can talk?" He asked.
"Russ, I'm busy."
"Come on babe, I'm in the car right now I'll be there in 10."
"I'm not letting you in," I answered him with the coldest voice I could muster.
"Fine, then I'll find another way."
He ended the call, and I took a deep breath. He better not come here. But knowing Russ, he probably will. I better tell Melissa not to open the door if he comes sniffing around my house.
━━━━━━━━━━━
"You're so funny, Mr. King."
I entered the kitchen and saw Melissa standing next to Easton behind the kitchen island. Melissa laughed at something Easton had said, I doubt it was funny. I coughed loudly to get their attention, and their heads snapped back to meet mine.
"What's going on here?" I asked.
Melissa looked like she'd been caught doing something she shouldn't have, and Easton had a weary look on his face. It was hard to tell what he was thinking.
"Nothing, we were just talking," Melissa said.
Talking huh, more like flirting.
"I thought we were gonna do homework," I said.
"I'll be there in a minute." She narrowed her eyes at me, silently asking me to leave. No way I'm leaving her alone with Easton.
"Actually, I'm gonna pick up some food. You want anything?" Easton asked.
"Melissa and I could share a pizza," I answered.
"Make it spicy," Melissa added with a wink and I imagined strangling her with my bare hands. I wasn't sure why it bothered me so much that she was flirting with him, but it did. As soon as Easton had left, I strode up to her.
"What was that?" I was going for a casual tone, but it sounded very accusing.
"What was what?" She asked, pretending not to know what I was talking about.
"You were totally hitting on him!"
"So? He's hot."
"Is he the reason you wanted to come here and study with me?"
"Of course not." She said and rolled her eyes at me.
"I want you to stop hitting on him," I said while crossing my arms.
"Are you jealous?" She laughed.
Yes, I was jealous. But I wasn't going to admit that to her. Suddenly I heard a loud noise coming from the front yard. It sounded like someone was screaming. Melissa and I ran towards the door. Outside I saw Easton and Russ. Easton was holding Russ at his collar and was pressing him up against our fence.
"Let go of me!" Russ screamed. He tried to push Easton away, but he wasn't strong enough. Easton was a head taller than Russ and had probably spent years at the gym, whereas Russ has spent the majority of his last three years drinking and partying.
"Not until you tell me what you were doing!" Easton growled.
I stepped closer to them.
"Russ?" I asked.
Both Russ and Easton faced me, Russ' eyes were hopeful while Easton looked confused.
"Is this your boyfriend?" Easton asked me.
"Ex-boyfriend" I clarified.
"The guy was trying to sneak into your room!"
"I just wanted to talk to you." Russ wheezed. You could tell he was exhausted after trying to fight off Easton.
"It doesn't look like she wants to talk to you, kid." He sneered at Russ. Russ tried to spit on him, but failed and ended up drooling on himself instead.
"She can speak for herself." He gritted out.
"You want to talk to him?" Easton asked me.
"Not really," I replied.
Russ wiggled himself out of Easton's grip and backed away slowly. He straightened his clothes before glaring at me.
"Fine." He finally said. "You'll regret this," he continued and then started to limp away.
"Woah, that was intense," Melissa said from behind me, I had entirely forgotten that she was still there. She walked over to Easton and put his hand on his shoulder to comfort him.
"Are you okay, Mr. King?" She asked him, and I wanted to puke in my mouth.
"I'm fine." He said and started to walk towards his car. Two seconds later he was gone.
I told Melissa that I wasn't in the mood to study anymore and she totally understood. She left, and I went to my room to lay down. When had my life become so filled with drama?
