The Myth of Night and Day
A/N This was definitely my favourite Tardigrade prompt so far! I've been toying with the idea of writing something mythological for a while now and this was great practice. It was right up my alley and I had a lot of fun writing this one. Hope you all enjoy it just as much!
Long, long ago, there was a young goddess who was admired by all the other gods for her beauty. Her beauty was so radiant that she shone brighter than a star. Her name was Solaya. She spent nearly all of her time looking down on the mortal world, bathing the earth in light. The mortals worshipped her for illuminating their life. And all was well.
One day her light fell upon a mortal girl with a beauty never seen before. Solaya's light reflected upon the girl's silken hair, lit up her sea-blue eyes and cast a shadow that accentuated her perfect figure. All the men gawked at her as she walked by. Woman stayed close to her, hoping her beauty would rub off on them, too. Even some of the gods had taken a shine to her, such as Silvus, god of the forest, and Nero, god of darkness.
Solaya watched this with growing anger. Jealousy dimmed her bright light. Grey clouds of thunder obscured her radiance.
One day, when she spotted Nero visiting the girl to offer her the best his powers could give, Solaya couldn't take it anymore. She waited until Nero had gone back to his abyss, before she descended to visit the girl herself.
The girl bent down on her knees in awe, thanking the goddess for honouring her with her presence. Solaya told her she was not happy with what she'd seen from the girl so far, and that she should repent for her sins. The girl, shocked as she was, told Solaya that she'd worshipped her all her life, spending as much time in prayer as any other woman, if not more.
Solaya inflated with rage. First the girl had tried to embarrass the goddess with her beauty, and now she dared to make her out for a liar?!
"You will pay for your insolence!" Solaya bellowed, before allowing her radiance to burst forth out of her divine body.
The bright light caused such heat to wash over the poor girl, that her mortal skin could not withstand it. It burned her skin like wildfire, until it cracked and crisped and made her unrecognisable.
Solaya gasped when she realised what she'd done. She looked upon the girl, whose beauty was utterly burned away. Without a backwards glance, she fled the scene to take back her rightful place upon the sky.
It wasn't long before the other gods found out what Solaya had done. They decided she should be punished for her selfish act. Nero, heartbroken as he was, gladly offered to take care of it. With a deep vengeance, he sent his shadow-dogs after the beautiful goddess.
Solaya has been on the run ever since. Even to this day you can see her flee across the sky. She hides at the back of the world, only to come back out when the dogs follow her to her hiding place behind the earth.
Such is her punishment for a most selfish deed; she will nevermore know peace.
