Rory's POV
Lena, I remembered.
That was her name.
My memories had started to surface a bit since the dream. Everything in that dream had happened, I started to remember.
There were a few other people whom I couldn't remember though. The blank spaces were starting to annoy me.
I tried to rack my brain for anything else. Any information that would tell me who Chase and I were.
I looked at Chase sleeping soundly beside me his head resting on my shoulder. He'd fallen asleep sometime back and I didn't have the heart to wake him even though we should have started up a few hours later.
If we were gonna get out of this maze or whatever, we had to keep walking. But he looked really tired.
And he didn't look like he was having any bad dreams, so I didn't want to disturb him.
I wondered how long it had been since we got lost in here. It had to be a few days at least. We'd been wandering around for a while now.
I remembered the bones, how Chase had gotten freaked out. I mean, it was pretty normal to get freaked out over bones, especially human bones.
But the way Chase had just frozen... like he had seen something traumatizing.
I felt Chase stirring beside me. He woke up and looked around, as if trying to remember where he was.
"Rory?" He whispered.
"Yeah?"
"How long has it been since we stopped? We have to get going."
We both got up and made our way to the tunnel we had entered from.
"Wait what? Where's the exit?" Chase said, reaching the place where we had entered from before me.
"What it's right..." I stopped walking when I came face to face with a rocky wall. "That's weird it was right here!"
I looked around and saw a different exit.
"Chase," I said ask pointed to the other exit. "Was that there before?"
"No." He said, inching closer to me. "It looks like there's a cliff."
"Chase are the tunnels moving?" I asked, suddenly sure they were.
"No they can't be moving, right? That's not possible."
"Chase you have wings and you're talking to me about impossible stuff?"
"Okay but-" Chase stopped mid-sentence and tensed. "R- Rory?" He whispered, his eyes widening, "d- don't freak out, but turn around."
I turned around to find something in the shadows. I couldn't make out what it was because it was too dark, but I could tell I was big.
I slowly inched my way toward Chase.
The creature looked ready to pounce.
It came closer as I stepped farther away from it, and when it came out of the shadows, I could see it.
Three heads.
I remembered something about a fairytale with this monster that had three heads. What was it called? The Chimaera or something like that.
This creature reminded me exactly of that, except it looked familiar. I couldn't remember exactly, but I felt like I'd fought it before.
The creature let out a howl and lit the room. Yep, it had fire breath.
For the first time in days I could actually see some light. But the fact that the light might very well kill me and Chase in a few seconds wasn't very comforting.
Chase wrapped an arm around me protectively.
"Ch- Chase?" I whispered. "What do we do?"
"Um I have no idea. Play dead?"
I thought he was joking at first but he didn't sound like it. He sounded genuinely scared.
Then, suddenly, the creature tried to pounce on us.
"The cliff!" Chase yelled, "we need to get there!"
I tried to move but couldn't. It was like my legs were glued to the floor. I hadn't felt so scared in my life.
Moments of a battle flashed through my head.
A boy being carried away by a griffin.
Ben, his name was.
Then, the monster was there. The one that was trying to kill us now.
"Don't worry, I'll take care of it." Chase charged out, and seeing him on the field, the Chimera slowed. It's snake head hissed.
"Yeah, you know it's all over for you—don't you, ugly?
Then the girl, Lena, dashed back through the dunes and behind the archers before Chase and the Chimera even came to blows.
When I was halfway to the others, Chase said, "Crap!"
I whirled around and raised my sword.
But Chase wasn't hurt. "I still got it, Rory!"
I didn't listen to him, though. I tackled the monster, trying to stop it from reaching Ben and the other girl. Mia.
"Rory, I said I got it." Said Chase somewhere behind me. He still wants close enough to do any slaying.
The Chimera leaped.
I guided my sword into the monsters heart.
As I recalled this memory, I remembered so many stuff. Friends, allies, and others.
I remembered 5th at this wasn't the first time I had fought this monster.
I had no sword, and tackling it with my bare hands wouldn't be a smart idea, but I was no longer scared.
I was Rory Landon. I wasn't going to let a stupid monster scare me.
I turned and ran behind Chase, who was halfway toward the cliff. He could fly us out of here.
But before anyone could do anything, the Chimera bounded past me and snapped at Chase, missing him by a few inches.
I sighed in relief. He hadn't gotten hurt.
But then he let out a cry of pain.
His wings fluttered into view and I could see what had happened. The Chimera had damaged them. We couldn't leave now. I had a feeling it had done that on purpose.
I caught up to Chase as the monster got ready to pounce again.
"Chase!" I said worried. "Are you okay?"
The Chimera pounced again, knocking us both over.
It was then that I realized how close we were to the edge of the cliff.
We both fell over.
Kyle POV
I was getting worried.
Lena was acting really worried about something.
She was holding something back from everyone, I knew it.
"Lena," I said, walking up to her. "What's wrong? And don't say nothing. I can tell somethings wrong."
"Kyle..." she started. "It's not really anything you need to be worried about. It's just some stupid theory of what happened to Rory and Chase."
I could tell it wasn't just some stupid theory. She looked really worried.
She looked down at the floor, and turned to walk away.
I grabbed her hand. "Lena, you can tell me."
She didn't turn around.
"Please." I said. "You can trust me with anything."
I gently turned her around. There was tears glistening on her face.
"Lena, please, your worrying me."
"Kyle I-" her voice broke. "Something horrible happened to them." Tears were rolling down her cheeks. I pulled her closer to me and hugged her. She buried her face in my chest.
"Th- they could be gone now. I read in a fairytale about this- this maze.it's always changing. When I heard Solange leave the dungeons, she cast a spell. Chase and Rory lost their memories, I'm sure of it." She was sobbing uncontrollably now.
I pulled her closer. "It's okay." I whispered.
But deep down I knew. If Lena was right, and the maze she was talking about was the one I thought it was, then the only hope for Chase and Rory making it out of there alive was each other.
So...
Raise your hand if you wanna kill me for that cliffhanger.
*everyone raises hand*
Okay I better run now...
Also the flashback is what happened at the beginning of Of Witches and Wind. I had the book with me when I wrote this so everything was written according to what happened.
Okay now I should go hide...
