4 - fear
Nobody says anything after the call. The group hang around their cars, some seated inside and others atop the hoods. There's an unusually chill breeze in the air.
Hoseok glances around. He sees Namjoon sitting on top of his car's hood with both feet resting lightly on the bumper. His sleeves are rolled up. Amongst the group, he's the only one with a calm expression.
On the same car's roof, Yoongi sits with one knee folded. He lowers the cig in his hand and Yoonji, who is standing on the ground next to her brother, flicks open her lighter. There's a small whisper of thanks as he pressed the cig to his lips and exhales a thick layer of smoke.
Seokjin, who was initially standing near the twins, walks away with a look of disgust. Hoseok follows him with his eyes and his gaze falls on Jimin. He's standing next to Jungkook's car and staring at his phone.
"Fuck it," Then Jimin looks up, his jaw clenched and teeth gritted. "Are we all just going to stand here like a bunch of idiots?"
Namjoon glances over at Jimin with sorrow filled eyes. "Jimin... you have to—"
"If you're going to tell me to calm down, don't even fucking bother," Jimin hisses loudly, his eyes wide and filled with rage. "My brother is stuck in a building filled with these damn things! I can't stand here and wait!"
"Get your head out of your ass," Yoongi snaps with a slight slur. "We still need a plan."
"He's right," Yoonji cocks her head and tilts the cig in her mouth. "You wanna die?"
Everyone glances at Yoonji with the exception of the still calm Yoongi. Jimin understandably steps backwards in fear.
"Uhm," Jimin bites his lip. "What? No!"
"Cool," Yoonji squints her eyes. "Then we need a plan, 'cos running in there and dying is a waste of time, isn't it? Then our efforts to get Ami and Jihyun will be for nothing!"
"But if we don't move now, there won't be anyone to save!"
"Go on your own then! Die yourself!"
Contrary to what Hoseok expected, Yoongi actually didn't back up his sister and instead spits some words at her. "Yoonji! What the fuck are you saying?!"
"Shut up!," Yoonji pushes her brother away. "Your brother isn't the only one stuck in there, so is my friend! And if you want to be suicidal and charge in a building full of zombies then do it on your own!"
"Fine then!," Jimin shouts and stomps away. "I'll do just that!"
As Jimin walks away, Taehyung looks up and tails him. "Jimin? Hey, wait—"
"Let go of me," Jimin hisses when Taehyung grabs his wrist.
Soon, the silence turns into noisy chaos and Hoseok is just glad that there aren't any zombies close-by. Jimin is still walking away despite Taehyung's pleas. Yoongi and Yoongi are having a dispute over the conversation that just took place.
Seokjin is still standing far away whilst pinching his own nose whilst Jungkook is staring blankly inside the car. Namjoon is still silent atop his car's hood.
With all the tension present, Hoseok takes a deep breath. "Guys... please...."
"Jimin, just calm down. Think this through."
"Shut up, Taehyung! If none of you want to save Jihyun, I'll do it myself!"
"Guys!," Hoseok finally screams loudly. "Just stop!"
Hoseok's scream renders the whole group into silence and he swallows dryly when he feels on the gazes on him. His hand shakes as he digs into his pocket and pulls out his cellphone.
"Just a few minutes ago, I was on the phone with Jiwoo," Hoseok's lips tremble, despite that he continues to speak. "Do you guys want to know how my hometown, Gwangju has been doing?!"
Nobody really gives an answer. But when Hoseok sees Namjoon glance at him, he takes it as a sign to continue.
"The whole province— it's completely destroyed!," Hoseok feels tears form in his eyes. "Jiwoo, my mom, my dad— they've been on the run from these things for God knows how long."
Hoseok shoves his phone back into his pocket. He still feels anxious from all the stares but he's at least glad that he stopped everyone from arguing, even for just a moment.
"Listen," Hoseok inhales deeply. "I know you guys are worried— about your friend, your brother, about everyone but please! Don't take this anger out on each other."
Yoonji and Jimin glance at each other. Due to the distance between, Hoseok can't really tell whether their eyes met or not.
"Okay, okay, my point is!," Hoseok runs a hand through his hair. "All of us are worried, one of us nearly died, we're in a zombie apocalypse now and we all need a few minutes to take this all in."
Again, there's silence. Hoseok clasps his hands together and feel his palms sweat.
"So please— please don't fight. Right now, we are all we have."
Hoseok takes a deep breath. He feels his chest loosen and nearly loses his balance when he leans on a street lamp pole nearby. The others stare at him, the silence still tense.
And before Hoseok could think he should add something, Seokjin speaks from far back. "Damn, man. Didn't think you had it in you to talk like that."
Hoseok raises a brow. "What's that supposed to mean?"
"He has a point," Yoonji shrugs and spins the cig in her hands. "Sorry, shortie."
Although the nickname makes Jimin frown, he sighs and glances at Yoonji apologetically.
"Guess I'm sorry too," Jimin crosses his arms and looks away.
It's obvious that there's still a lot of tension in the air and the two are a long way from apologizing to each other properly— but Hoseok is just glad that they've at least stopped fighting.
Hoseok breathes in and out. Just before the silence can fall onto the group again, someone speaks.
"We go in through the back."
Namjoon's sudden words and stern tone make everyone face him. He's still seated on top of the car's hood, this time with both hands laced together with his chin propped over his fingers.
"The back of what?," Hoseok asks after he senses silence from the rest.
"Campus," Namjoon nods to himself. "Since this whole thing happened around lunch time, I'm sure the front gates will be flooded with the other students— with zombies. It will be safer to go through the back."
"Hold up," Seokjin shakes his head. "Were you silent this whole time because you were thinking of a plan?"
Namjoon hums. He hops off the hood of his car and cracks his knuckles. "Sorry I took so long, Jimin. Had to make sure it was perfect."
And there's an odd expression that crosses Jimin's face upon hearing those words, maybe guilt or even regret. Hoseok honestly expected him to cry right there but instead he flashes Namjoon a warm grin.
"Wow," Jungkook muses from the car. "Wish I could plan like you."
His words bring out laughter from some and for a moment, the air is light.
"Hey, Tae," Namjoon calls out. "You still carry that notepad around?"
Taehyung pauses for a bit then he feels his pants pocket. "Yeah, still do... why?"
"Could you toss it to me for a sec?," Namjoon asks and raises a hand.
After Taehyung digs into his pocket, he pulls out a notepad so small that it's engulfed completely by his large palm. He throws it across the parking a lot and Hoseok sees its purple leather for a split second before it lands in Namjoon's hands.
There's a ball-pen shoved inside the notebook's spring. Namjoon pulls it out and taps his cheek with it. "Do you guys mind gathering around here for a bit?"
Without a hint of hesitation, everyone moves from their positions and head towards Namjoon. Suddenly Hosoek feels someone's hand on his shoulder and he nearly jumps out of shock.
Hoseok lets out a loud sigh of relief when he sees Jungkook next to him. Still, the blood stains on his shirt aren't as pleasing.
"Hey," Jungkook says with a bunny grin. "You okay?"
"Yeah," Hoseok smiles back. "I'm still sorry about... that."
Jungkook tilts his head innocently. "About what?"
It bring outs a reaction from Hoseok and makes him frown. "You? Almost d-wording? Because of me?"
A short silence passes as Jungkook tongues his cheek. "I told you it was okay, man. I'm the one who should be sorry, you know?"
"You?," Hoseok raises a brow. "Why should you be sorry?"
"Well, other than the fact that y'all nearly pissed yourselves because of me," Jungkook pauses. "There's also... your family. I'm really sorry about what they're going through."
Hoseok smiles. "It's okay. At least I know that they're all safe... and alive."
As expected, his words make Jungkook glance at the Min twins. They're standing next to Namjoon and are both in a deep conversation. Hoseok thinks that Yoongi is scolding Yoonji for the previous fight but they can only imagine.
"God, I'm such a prick," Hoseok says in realization. "Did I really talk about my family in front of them?"
"Hey," Jungkook says sternly. "You said it yourself, we all have people we're worried about. Jiwoo is a fighter, your family will be fine."
Hoseok knows Jungkook's good intent, really, but he can't help but become even more worried after hearing those remarks. Still, he taps his friend's shoulder gratefully.
Then Namjoon whistles loudly. Jungkook and Hoseok jog over to the group. They all stand around Namjoon and watch him scribble onto Taehyung's purple notepad.
With all the people standing around, Hoseok tries to push through Seokjin's broad shoulders. He gets a glimpse of Namjoon's smooth lettering and huffs out enviously.
"Like I said, we go through the back because the front will be too clustered," Namjoon muses and draws a rough sketch of the campus. "I'm assuming outside will be dangerous so our first entry point is gym area at the very back."
"Man, you're really bad at drawing," Yoongi comments from behind the crowd.
"Shut the fuck up, midget," Seokjin replies in front of Hoseok. "Can't you see he's laying out his plan to us?"
"I know that, Pacific shoulder ass."
"Then be quiet, you oompa loompa bodied bitch."
"Shut up, you two," Jimin hisses with a finger over his mouth. "Go on, Joonie."
Namjoon gives Jimin a small smile. "We can't give too much attention to ourselves so bringing our cars is a big no. Instead, we park outside, near the back gates, and walk."
"I don't think that's a good idea," Taehyung comments and everyone glances at him. "We did that just a while ago and..."
"Right, about that," Namjoon's chin sticks out and he taps his cheek with the pen again. "I was thinking we should split up."
"I'm gonna have to stop you there," Yoonji speaks up with the cig between her teeth. "Don't you watch horror flicks? Splitting up is suicide."
"She's right," Jimin shrugs. Yoonji gives him a look.
There's still a slight tension between the two and Hoseok can feel it. He wonders if the others are as bothered as he is.
"I know," Namjoon looks up and grins. "But the reason why we were put in such a bad situation earlier is because we were too clustered."
"So you think going in with smaller groups will attract less attention?," Jungkook asks.
Namjoon points at Jungkook with the pen. "Exactly. It will be easier to move around too."
"Why does that idea make me even more anxious?," Jimin sighs and runs a hand through his hair.
"Same," Hoseok frowns.
"Trust me, we'll be fine," Namjoon starts to jot down everyone's names under the drawing. "Now we have to decide the teams. Anyone have any particular demands?"
With Namjoon's gaze piercing straight through, Hoseok follows his gaze and his eyes land on the Min twins, alongside Taehyung and Jimin.
"Why are you looking at us?," Jimin asks. Taehyung stands behind him.
"Well," Namjoon looks down on the notepad and continues to write. "I considered that you guys wanted to stick to your pairings. So here are the team I've drafted."
After adding one final scribble, Namjoon raises the notepad and flips it for everyone to see. Hoseok, being the closest to him, leans in to read out the text written right beneath the campus layout.
Hoseok reads it out loud to the others. Since nobody protests, the teams are made official almost instantly. They stand apart. Around him are Jimin, Tae and Seokjin.
"We all still have our weapons?," Namjoon calls out.
Yoonji smirks and clasps the still bloody bat in her hands. Jimin sheepishly raises his hands and shows off the brass knuckles. Meanwhile, Hoseok just looks down at his feet and kicks the dirt.
"Good," Namjoon nods firmly. "Everyone get in your cars, you guys can ask me questions on the way."
With that, everyone shuffles away and enters their respective vehicles. Hoseok ends up inside Namjoon's car alone. He notices that blood stains on the seats and windows. The flashback of their encounter with the horde just moments ago makes him shiver.
Namjoon is silent as he drives off. Hoseok looks behind him and sees Jungkook and Seokjin's cars trail just a few inches back.
And for some reason, Hoseok just sits there quietly. Although Namjoon is a good friend, a very understanding one, he doesn't really know what to say in this sort of situation.
"Got a lot on your mind?," Hoseok clears his throat.
Namjoon glances at Hoseok through the rearview mirror but quickly looks back at the road. "Not really."
Not really? The answer almost makes Hoseok burst out into laughter. If the situation wasn't so serious, and if Namjoon didn't have such a stern expression on his face, then maybe he would have let out a little chuckle.
"I'm sorry about Jiwoo," Namjoon says suddenly, his tone calm as usual. "And the rest of your family."
It takes a while but the realization eventually dawns on Hoseok. He glances at Namjoon's hands and sees him grip the steering wheel tightly. His knuckles are trembling.
"Thanks," Hoseok leans on the seat and sighs. "You're a bad liar, by the way."
And Namjoon glances at Hoseok again but this time he doesn't say anything. The silence doesn't last long when a phone suddenly rings loudly.
It's Namjoon's. He swiftly swipes at the screen with his fingers. A chaotic mixture of screaming voices instantly fills the car and Hoseok swears that his soul nearly jumped out of his own body.
"Seokjin?," Namjoon asks, somehow deciphering the voices. "What's wrong?"
"Fuck off, Yoongi!," Seokjin screams from the other end of the line. "Sorry, Namjoon. The midget has a question."
"Stop me calling me a midget, you little shit!," Yoongi's voice comes with what sounds like a punch. "Hey, Joon. Just wanted to ask something."
"Shoot," Namjoon says as they turn a corner.
"How exactly are we going to get Jihyun and Ami out of there?"
It sounded fairly simple at first but then Hoseok thinks and realizes that it's something Namjoon is yet to acknowledge.
"Don't worry," Namjoon smiles. "There's a reason why I grouped us this way."
A bit of silence passes before Yoonji speaks. "Listen, I only trust you because you're Yoongi's friend. You sure about this?"
"Yeah," Namjoon replies quickly. "We're here. Park behind the greenhouse and let's meet up at the entrance."
"Got it," Seokjin says before a beep ends the call.
It takes a while for Hoseok to process it so he opens the passenger side window and looks outside. There are some zombies limping about but they're far away and don't pose any danger to him. So he glances ahead and sees the silhouette of their campus' main building just up ahead.
The campus looks normal, almost as if straight out of an ordinary day. There are no signs of the epidemic from the outside's concrete walls. But then the streets are littered with those zombies and suddenly they're in a post apocalyptic war with the undead.
One zombie starts to walk closer so Hoseok quickly pulls up the car window. Namjoon suddenly stops the car in front of the school's back gates and the others quickly follow suit.
Namjoon grips his knife and slowly steps out of the car. Hoseok does as well and quietly shuts the door. Once everyone is out of their cars, they gather in front of the gates.
Of course, a handful of zombies try to approach the group but both Jimin and Yoonji take them out quickly. The speed of their swings is almost mesmerizing. No other undead approach and Hoseok assumes that they've retreated out of fear.
Thankfully, the gates are open. Hoseok can just imagine how horrifying it would be to open these loud squeaky gates with zombies all around them.
With Namjoon's lead, the group makes it across the grassy fields. Hoseok stops for a bit when he spots the netted goal nearby. He looks around and realizes that they're standing in the school's soccer field.
It's usually a happy place for Hoseok. Whenever he's on the field or in the middle of a match, he'd feel like the whole world was cheering for him— or maybe it was Jimin's extremely loud cheering voice, it doesn't really matter.
Seeing the field in its current state brings tears to Hoseok's eyes. The grass is flat, almost as if a large crowd had trampled over it. Usually filled with students eating lunch or just hanging out, the metal blue bleachers are empty and are instead littered with plastic trash and crushes wax cups.
Hoseok can almost hear the crowd's cheer as they watch him kick the ball into the goal. Their chants sound distant and far away.
"—and that's the plan," Namjoon's voice finally reaches Hoseok. "Everyone got that? Seok?"
Hoseok blinks. He turns and sees everyone staring at him. "Uhm, I wasn't really— listening. Sorry."
Most of them groan loudly in frustration but Namjoon keeps the smile on his face. He smiles and pats Hoseok's shoulder.
"It's okay, I'll summarize it," Namjoon says. "I was just saying that in regards to us splitting up— you guys know that our school has two main buildings, right?"
"Yeah, of course," Yoongi squints his eyes. "Did Jihyun mention which one he was in?"
Jimin looks down and shakes his head. "He didn't..."
"That's great," Yoongi groans.
"Oh," Hoseok says in realization. "So we have to check both?"
"Since it's too risky to call Jihyun now, yes," Namjoon nods. "It will take less time to look for him if we split up."
"That's a good plan but the idea of splitting up?," Jungkook pauses and shivers. "I hate it."
"I know," Namjoon smiles. "Which is why the quicker we are, the better it is for everyone."
"How do you have an answer for everything?," Hoseok shakes his head. "It's kinda scary."
"Hold up. Don't you guys think it's weird?," Seokjin says whilst pinching his nose.
"What's weird?," Yoongi smirks. "The way you've got a nose of a hyena?"
Seokjin frowns. "No, dumbass. Look around you."
"We're in the soccer field!," Hoseok chirps.
"Right, your second home," Seokjin groans. "Not the point! Didn't we decide to ditch around lunch time?"
"Uh-huh," Jungkook nods.
"So where is everyone?"
At that, everyone turns silent. Hoseok doesn't how he didn't realize earlier that the the absence of people was strange in itself. He looks around again. Now that he's aware, the emptiness brings a chill down his spine.
"Oh, shit," Someone says. Hoseok is too pre-occupied by his own fear to check.
"Maybe they all ran away?," Jungkook suggests. "There were a lot of those things near Yoongi and Yoonji's house."
"They weren't wearing uniforms," Taehyung grumbles out a reply. "So..."
"Wait a damn minute," Jimin shakes his head. "Are you guys suggesting that all the zombies are inside the buildings?"
"That sounds ridiculous," Hoseok laughs. "We're overthinking. With all that happened, today's classes might have already ended. Right, Namjoon?"
Contrary to Hoseok's expectations, Namjoon gives him a wary look. "We still have to play safe. Don't separate. Stick to your groups."
Another chill runs down Hoseok's spine. "Uhm, thanks for reassuring me?"
"Oh my God," Yoonji sighs and rubs her temples. "This really is suicide."
"It is," Jimin laces his fingers together and stretches them. "But do we have a choice?"
Suddenly, there's a stern expression on Yoonji's face. "We don't."
The tension is back but Hoseok knows it isn't the same one as before. He gulps and digs his feet into the ground.
"God damn it," Yoongi hisses. "I swear to God, if any of you fuckers die—"
"Nobody is dying," Taehyung speaks suddenly, his voice louder than usual. "We have each other."
There's a smile on Jimin's face, as well as a bit of redness in his cheeks as Taehyung swings an arm over his shoulders. Hoseok can't help but notice the way Jimin fidgets anxiously.
"Let's go," Namjoon grits with his eyes on the two. "We don't have time to waste."
Everyone nods and whispers out some form of agreement. Hoseok shuffles towards his group. Whilst Jimin and Taehyung stand together like two halves of an apple, Seokjin spins something in his finger.
It's a key with a long red tag tied to its base. Hoseok's mouth forms a circle. "I can't believe I forgot."
Seokjin hears him and raises a brow. "Forgot what?"
"That you're part of the school council," Hoseok replies.
At that, Seokjin makes a face. He doesn't say anything though and instead huffs and shoves the key back into his pocket.
"Okay guys, this is it," Namjoon announces from across them. "We'll meet up in maybe an hour. If you guys meet anything dead—"
"Bash their brains in," Yoonji smirks and clasps her bat. "Got it."
"It will be too dangerous to call each other," Namjoon continues. "So as much as possible, limit communication to texting. Okay?"
"Yes, boss," Jungkook salutes jokingly.
It brings out a laugh from Namjoon. "We have to be quick, okay? See you guys later."
With a heavy heart, Hoseok watches Namjoon, Jungkook and the Min twins walk out of his view. When they're completely out of sight, he hears his own heart hammer loudly against his chest.
"Hey, they'll be fine," Jimin pats his back. "The twins are insanely strong. Nothing will get to them."
"I know, it's just—" Hoseok gulps hard. "I'm scared."
"We all are," Jimin glances at Taehyung. "Which is why we need to be quick."
Hoseok stares at Jimin and sees the stern expression on his face. His hand clasps Taehyung's wrist tightly. Behind them, Seokjin grimaces with that look of disgust still on his face.
"God, zombies who? The ants will get me first," Seokjin grumbles. "Come on, lovebirds. Let's go."
"H-Hey!," Jimin stutters, his cheeks flushed. "Who are you calling lovebirds?!"
Although Taehyung doesn't say anything, he shifts his hand so that it's petting Jimin's hair. Hoseok can practically see the steam rise from Jimin's head.
"L-Let's just go," Jimin waves him off. "I don't want Jihyun to spend one more second in that hell hole."
With that, Hoseok's group finally starts moving. His boots crunch loudly against the grass. He looks up and sees the silhouette of the second main building just a few feet away.
Once they're close enough, Seokjin suddenly gags. "Fuck me. I'm going to puke."
Seokjin turns away and Hoseok sees what made him gag. It's a carcass of what once was a human squished in between the building's main entrance doors. There's blood and organ bits smeared across the concrete walls and metal doors.
"Oh God," Seokjin grumbles. "That smell is horrible. I think I'm going to be sick."
Hoseok moves to rub Seokjin's back when he actually starts to puke. Meanwhile, Jimin and Taehyung just stare at the corpse silently.
As if it's nothing, Taehyung steps forward and pulls the door open. It scrapes against the carcass and Hoseok sees tangled guts slide across the ground.
"Damn it, Tae," Jimin grits his teeth and looks away. "That's disgusting."
Taehyung doesn't say anything and opens the door fully. It slams against the wall and Hoseok swears that he hears some bones crush shatter the concrete.
Seokjin finally raises his head. He has a hand on his mouth. "God damn it, I almost don't want to go in."
"Would you rather stay out here?," Jimin asks. "We won't be gone for long."
"What? Me, stay out here with that corpse?," Seokjin spits. "Fuck no. Get out of my way."
As Seokjin marches forward, he pushes himself passed Taehyung and disappears through the school's entrance. Hoseok honestly expects him to run out puking again but when a few minutes pass and he hears nothing from his friend, he starts getting worried.
"We should go in," Jimin says a bit rashly. "Come on."
So Jimin leads the way with Taehyung tailing behind him and somehow Hoseok ends up at the very back. He leaves the door open as he steps inside, feeling as though they're going to have to run out of the place at some point.
It's pitch dark, which is strange. It takes a few seconds for Hoseok's eyes to adjust to the darkness.
The bloody carcass at the doorway is a bland introduction, if you compare it to the grisly state of the hallways. Blood is smeared on the walls and floor. Posters of various clubs and upcoming events are ripped apart. There are items scattered around as well, like shoes, bags and other things.
Hoseok stops when he steps on something that squeaks. He looks down and sees a blood soaked Doraemon keychain on the ground.
He recognizes it. It belongs to one of his teammates. A shiver runs down Hoseok's spine.
"Where is everyone?," Jimin whispers. "Seokjin?! Where are you?!"
"Don't shout!," Hoseok shushes him.
With that, Jimin zips his lips. Taehyung suddenly digs into his pocket and pulls out a cellphone. He switches on the flashlight and it illuminates the rest of the hallway.
That's how Hoseok sees Seokjin standing at the other side of the hallway. He almost calls out to his friends out of instinct, until he sees the mangled corpses laying around his feet.
And surprisingly, Jimin slips away from Taehyung's grip. He steps forward bravely, grabs Seokjin by the wrist and pulls him back to the rest of the group.
Hoseok takes a glimpse as Seokjin stumbles to his side. He pales when he recognizes the familiar striped uniforms and spiked black sports shoes. All their heads are bashed in with bits of brain scattered about. As he feels his hands tremble, he turns away with wide eyes.
"Namjoon told us not to separate," Jimin huffs in a whisper. "Don't just run off like that!"
Seokjin doesn't say anything. He just covers his nose with his hand and turns away. Without much to say, Hoseok turns on the flashlight of his own phone, steps over the bodies and walks forward.
Of course, that brings out a few (loud) questions from Jimin and he only quiets down after Taehyung whispers something in his ear. Hoseok assumes that he pointed out the corpses' soccer uniforms at some point.
And nobody says anything about it. Hoseok is glad. He shines the flashlight of his phone around the hallways. There are more corpses, all unrecognizable due to their rotting skin and missing parts.
"Guys," Seokjin says from the side. "Stairs."
Everyone turns towards the direction Seokjin points at. They eventually spot the stairs leading to the second floor. Hoseok is a bit shaken by the constant image of blood being smeared on the walls.
As the four climb up the steps, Seokjin speaks. Since he's pinching his nose, his voice comes out nasally. "For a place supposedly riddled with zombies— it's way too quiet."
Nobody says anything to that. Hoseok thinks that the dread in Seokjin's words isn't really something that would bring out a reply from anyone.
When Hoseok looks behind him to glance at the others, he has the sudden realization of him leading the group. It's weird, he's used to being the vice leader of his soccer team, but being ahead of his friends makes him feel off.
They soon reach the second floor and Hoseok freezes at the top step. In the silence, he heads faint growling from deep within both sides of the hallways.
"The zombies are up here," Hoseok whispers.
"No shit," Seokjin deadpans.
Jimin raises his fists. His brass knuckles glint in the darkness. "Nothing my fists can't take care of. Come on."
As Jimin slips away from Hoseok's sight, Taehyung wordlessly tails him. Seokjin releases a string of curse words under his breath as he follows them. Suddenly, Hoseok is at the very back of the group again. He sighs and walks into the darkness.
Even with flashlight of his phone, Hoseok still finds it difficult to see the others. He can barely see Seokjin's back in front of him. Then something wobbles into view.
Before anyone can react, Jimin swings his fist. A zombie falls to the ground with its face bashed in. Everyone just stares as Jimin cracks his knuckles.
Whenever any zombie tries to come near them, Jimin easily makes them fall with his fists. But then he stops suddenly and Hoseok ends up bumping into Seokjin's back.
"The fu—," Seokjin stops himself. "Why'd you stop?!"
"Jihyun," Jimin breathes. "Jihyun!"
Jimin sprints forward, his fists raised and dripping with zombie bloody. With absolutely no hesitation, Taehyung follows behind him.
"Wait, don't run off—"
Before Hoseok can finish his sentence, his foot gets caught onto something. He trips and barely manages to flatten his palms before he could smash his face onto the ground.
At first, Hoseok just thinks it's his own clumsiness, but then he feels something grab onto his ankle. His jaw clenches as he turns around slowly to see a rotting hand clutching onto his foot.
Hoseok freezes for a second. He stares at the zombie, at its missing cheek flesh and its gaping mouth. Half of its body is long gone and only entrails are left behind, creating a trail of blood as it crawls forward slowly.
When Hoseok's senses finally hit him, he kicks the zombie in the face with all his might. The thing's face explodes in a disgusting mix of blood and bone.
But the thing is still alive. Hoseok prepares to kick it again when a crowbar smashes its head to bits.
Seokjin wheezes and clutches onto the bloody slab of wood. "Double tap. Never thought Zombieland would be fucking useful."
With Seokjin's help, Hoseok is pulled back up to his feet. They don't even get time to talk because there's growling from all around them. He scrambles for his phone and realizes that it's on the ground.
The light is angled perfectly to give both Seokjin and Hoseok a kind of— rather stellar view. Jimin is crushing the wave of zombies with his fists. Blood spurts everywhere as he bashes their heads in with his brass knuckles.
And like the perfect tag team, Taehyung has his back against Jimin's. He has a knife and he easily stabs through the undead like slabs of butter.
"Don't just stand there!," Jimin punches through a zombie's skull. "Get Jihyun!"
Hoseok and Seokjin briefly glance at each other before they start to run. They both barely squeeze between the horde of zombies being beaten to pieces. Eventually they get through Jimin and Taehyung but are greeted by more of the undead.
"Fuck these smelly pieces of shit!," Seokjin rages and swings his crowbar around. "Die, fuckers!"
Seokjin's rage would have concerned Hoseok— if he wasn't so busy kicking down zombies, then maybe he would.
"Seokjin!," Hoseok yells. "Hold onto me!"
"The fuck do you mean?!," Seokjin hisses.
"Just do it!," Hoseok shouts.
With a frown still on his face, Seokjin grabs both of Hoseok's arms. He grits his teeth and hops slightly before bouncing on the wall with both feet. The soccer player's strong kicks pierce through a wave of zombies and causes them to fall like dominoes.
Seokjin clicks his tongue. Still, there's a smirk on his face. "Show-off."
Again, if the situation wasn't so serious, then maybe Hoseok would've laughed. "We have to get Jihyun!"
The smirk on Seokjin's face disappears as he nods. With Jimin and Taehyung still battling the zombies, Hoseok makes his way to the bathroom at the very end of the hallway.
Hoseok briefly glances at the bathroom's sign. Despite seeing its female logo, he kicks the door down with another powerful kick. But then his foot makes a splash as he steps on a pool of fresh blood.
Because there's an unexplainable feeling of dread at the pit of Hoseok's stomach, he ends up closing his eyes for a while. But there's no escaping what lies ahead, he knows that, so he opens his eyes and braces himself.
And just as he expects, the sight is grisly. There are corpses of students, still in their uniforms, laying in the middle of the bathroom. The bodies are surrounded by zombies that are still chomping on their flesh.
Seokjin gags again. This time, he holds it in. "Oh shit."
With his heart heavy in his chest, Hoseok grabs the zombies by the collars of their shirts and pulls them backwards. Once they tumble back, Seokjin finishes them off by striking their heads.
It gives both of them clear views of the bodies. One is a female— her top and skirt are torn to reveal her now mangled body. Most of the flesh on her legs and torso are gone. Some of her organs are either missing or completely gone and only white bones are left in the body.
The second body is male's and isn't in a much better state. Most of his face is gone and only an eyeball remains. It's been gnawed on so badly that a part of the boy's skull is exposed. One of his legs is missing as well.
Seokjin finally glances at the bodies. He gasps behind Hoseok, who is still frozen in place. "Is that—"
"Jihyun?! Jihyun!"
Jimin pushes through both Seokjin and Hoseok as he rushes into the bathroom. Once he spots the two bodies on the ground, he freezes as well.
For a moment, nobody says anything. Hoseok scans Jimin's figure and notices how much his hands are shaking. Blood drips from the brass knuckles and truckles onto the floor.
"Jimin," Hoseok breathes. "Hey—"
Suddenly, Jimin releases a shaky breath. He falls to his knees and his hands splash onto the pool of blood on the tiled floor. The way it splashes makes blood splatter across Hoseok's cheek.
"Jihyun?," Jimin's jaw trembles. "Jihyun?"
"Jimin—"
Just as Hoseok is about to speak, Seokjin pats his shoulder and shakes his head at him. They both step back as Jimin crawls closer to the body.
"No, no, no," Jimin starts to sob. "I was too late— I was— I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry that I couldn't get to you sooner, Jihyun."
Everyone is silent as Jimin cradles the body. He rocks back and forth and hugs the mangled corpse close. At this point, his clothes are soaked in red blood.
Hoseok glances at the woman's body. He notices her dyed blonde hair which is nearly concealed in the blood. It makes him think about Ami and a realization hits him—
"Hey," Hoseok whispers. "Ami doesn't dye her hair, right?"
"What nonsense are you asking at a time like this?!," Seokjin replies through gritted teeth.
"No, look," Hoseok gestures at the female corpse. "I don't think that's Ami."
Seokjin gives Hoseok a look but he glances at the corpse anyways. Of course, he pinches his nose and frowns at the smell.
"If that isn't Ami then—," Seokjin pauses when someone's hand touches his shoulder.
It's Taehyung, thankfully. He has blood smeared across his face and hands but somehow, he's unfazed. After giving Seokjin a shoulder pat, he carefully steps over the female corpse and makes his way to Jimin.
Taehyung squats down. He doesn't say anything for a few seconds. "Jimin—"
"Leave me alone," Jimin sniffles.
After Taehyung exhales loudly from his nose, he scoots closer. "You know... that isn't Jihyun."
Again, there's silence. Jimin turns around slowly with an utter look of disbelief on his face. There are fresh tears streaming down his rosy cheeks.
"How could you say that?," Jimin speaks with a long gasp.
"I'm serious," Taehyung says without a change in his tone. "Look closer—"
"Tae," Jimin sobs loudly. "Please don't make me feel worse."
The way Taehyung's expression shifts ever so slightly, with his eye twitching just a bit, makes the alarm in Hoseok's head ring loudly. But he doesn't say anything and instead watches silently as Jimin continues to cradle the body.
Nobody says anything, even when Jimin's phone starts to vibrate in his pocket. After a few minutes pass with Jimin showing no interest in answering, Taehyung eventually takes the phone himself.
Taehyung swiftly swipes the screen and presses the phone to his ear. Both Hoseok and Seokjin stare at him anticipation.
"Yeah, he's here," Expression still unchanging, Taehyung taps Jimin's shoulder. "It's Jihyun."
This time, Jimin doesn't bother to turn around. "I'm not in the mood for your fucking jokes, Tae."
Instead of answering, Taehyung presses a button on the phone. He turns on loudspeaker and suddenly there's loud crackling noise from the other end of the line.
"Jimin?," Jihyun's voice can barely be heard. "Are you there?!"
A moment of silence and realization passes. Jimin immediately lets go of the body. It falls onto the pooled floor and splashes more blood on his clothes.
Jimin immediately lunges for the phone. It almost slips off his hands. "Jihyun? Oh God— I thought you were— Thank goodness you're still—"
"Where are you?!," Jihyun's voice is muffled.
"Huh?!," Jimin screams into the phone. "I should be asking that! Where the hell are you?!"
"Second floor— main building A—," Something crashes in the background. "Fuck! Ami, run!"
Everyone freezes as loud shuffling can be heard from the other end of the call. When growls start to grow louder by the second, Jimin suddenly scrambles to his feet and runs out the bathroom.
"God damn it!," Seokjin yells. "You're the one who said not to run off!"
Without much of a choice, the rest follow Jimin out. Hoseok barely manages to jump over the double dead bodies on the ground.
"Stay put!," Jimin yells. "I'm coming!"
"We can't— oh shit!," Jihyun shouts. "Fucking— Yoonji, watch out!"
"Yoonji?," Hoseok exclaims to himself. "The others are with him!"
Jimin briskly runs down the stairs with the others hot as his tail. "Hold on, Jihyun!"
This time, Jihyun doesn't reply. Instead there's a loud yell from Jungkook in the other end before the call abruptly ends. Jimin curses loudly and shoves his phone back into his pocket.
And at the exact moment the group exits the place, there's a loud sound of shattering glass from the other building. Hoseok looks up and sees two figures falling out the window.
The person lands on the shrubs just in front of Hoseok— and he realizes that there are two of them; it's the Min twins. Yoongi has a tight hold onto his sister and both of them are covered in blood.
"Hey, is it just me?," Seokjin says slowly. "I don't think they're breathing."
