Watch for Dragons
Lord Brilland smashed his fists on his desk. One by one, all he was seeing on his screens was static. One by one, each of his security fireflies was dismantled, leaving an empty screen in their place.
"Agh! Something strange is going on here. There's been a security breach!" He complained. "Someone check the perimeters!" Brilland shouted. When he only heard his own voice echoing off the walls as a response, he grabbed his wand and growled. "Fine! I'll do it myself. Incompetent fools," He grumbled, gritting his teeth. He was soon taking the stairs up to the top of the stump in order to see what - or who, rather - was causing the breach of their meeting place.
Catra and Ellabelle both held their breath, staring frozen at the giant thing that laid before them. "No... sudden... movements." Catra breathed. They stood there, waiting for something to happen. "The creature is asleep... for now. If we make any noises that wake it up... we're dead."
Ellabelle gripped her wand in her hands. She watched it lying there, feeling each of its breaths on her skin. Its nostrils were the size of her.
"What all can that thing do, anyway? Can we turn this thing super tiny so we have a mosquito-sized dragon?" Catra asked, gesturing to the wand. Ellabelle shrugged.
"I don't know! The last time I used this, it was just to find my family's scroll in the Tree of Ancestors."
"So you don't even know how to use that thing? Well, this is just great!"
"I don't see you with anything magical! What are you gonna do to keep us from being burnt alive, pick his oversized nose with your hands?" Ellabelle raised an eyebrow, taunting Catra.
"Why, you little-"
Before she could finish, the floor rumbled as if there was an earthquake. The two girls quit their bickering and looked up, only to find the dragon looking down upon them with his shiny yellow eyes. He glared at them, flaring his nostrils, until he finally let out a blood curdling screech. Catra and Ellabelle covered their ears, then Ellabelle grabbed Catra's hand.
"Come on! There has to be some sort of escape!" Ellabelle shouted, looking around the cave. Every time the dragon stepped closer to them, the ground beneath them shook. Catra rolled her eyes.
"Typical Lady Larkdale, hiding a ferocious pet dragon underneath their meeting room. Is this how they were planning on making every fairy comply with their ridiculous orders?" She asked with a sigh.
At this comment, the dragon whipped around and slammed his tail into Catra, knocking her across the room.
"Catra!" Ellabelle shrieked, which ultimately only drew attention to herself. The dragon turned to Ellabelle, nostrils flaring. Ellabelle held her wand tightly in her hand and faced the monster head on. "Come on, magical properties of this wand that I don't understand, don't fail me now!" She shouted, then started waving it up and down in the dragon's direction. Beams of white light were exerted from the tip of the wand, hitting the creature in various spots, but nothing bad enough to immobilize him. Ellabelle hit him on the shoulder, in which he replied with a cry of terror.
"There has to be something else I can do," She whispered to herself, looking at the wand. It was shining brightly in her hands. It seemed as though her little stuns of light only made the dragon more angry with her. He turned to her, opened up his mouth until his jaws clicked and all of his pearly white teeth were showing, and began spitting fire from his lips. Ellabelle had no way to get a higher angle or to flee fast, since her wings were already gone.
Ellabelle hopped up onto a rock sticking out of the wall, and the dragon followed her with his eyes. He looked at her with an angry gaze and emitted more fire from his jaws. Ellabelle jumped back down again, landing directly on her back. A sharp jolt of pain shot up her back, but she got up anyway. Her legs were shaking. She had to come up with a plan.
The dragon started shooting fire at her once again, and all she could do was run. She jumped up every time flames were pushed towards her, feeling her heels getting warmer each time.
Ellabelle turned around. She saw Catra lying there. She couldn't tell if she was breathing still or not, which was terrifying.
But then, she surveyed the scene a little closer. A little ways above Catra's poofy dark curls was what appeared to be a rocky exit hatch.
Ellabelle dodged another fiery bullet and held her wand tight. She ran towards Catra. She had to get something to stand on to make it up to that door.
The dragon had other plans. He stepped in front of Ellabelle and looked her dead in the eyes, ready to watch her burst into flames. Ellabelle's hand became sweaty and her body went numb. She had to do something, but she couldn't run anymore. It had gotten her nowhere fast.
The moment the dragon opened his huge mouth to display his teeth, Ellabelle gripped her wand in her hands and shot a bolt of white light directly into his mouth. The dragon swallowed, shrieking and making horrified sounds as he gasped for air and slammed down head first onto the rocky floor. Ellabelle hoped that she hadn't killed him, but she was glad that she'd won the first round.
Ellabelle pushed her wand back to her side and grabbed a large rock, dragging it across the floor. She pushed it towards the exit hatch, then climbed on top of it to open the door. Ellabelle grabbed Catra and pushed her through first, then pulled herself up. She turned back to the dragon with a half smile on her face.
"See you around, soldier," She saluted him with a wink. Ellabelle climbed through the exit hatch and closed the door behind her, hearing a scream in protest from the dragon.
Ellabelle quickly turned her sights on Catra. She could now tell that she was breathing, thankfully; but she was knocked out pretty well.
Ellabelle gently slapped Catra's face to see if she would respond to the movement. Nothing. She didn't even try to open her eyes. Ellabelle began to panic.
"Come on, Catra! Wake up, please, wake up!" She whispered to her, trying not to make a big scene. Her heart was racing. How could she let this happen to Catra? Now two of her best friends were in danger, and it was all her fault.
Ellabelle grabbed her wand desperately. She didn't have anything to turn to but magic.
"Mr. Wand, I don't know if you can help me right now, but if you can, I really need it." She whispered. The wand started glowing its bright white color again, as if it was responding to Ellabelle. Her eyes widened. "So... um... please, heal my friend. Help her. Something, anything." She begged, looking down at the wand she held in her palms.
Ellabelle could feel tears flooding to her eyes, and she couldn't stop them. How did everything in her life manage to go wrong in one way or another? She couldn't stop the endless chain of disasters she always managed to cause. Why was her life this way?
Ellabelle twirled the wand in her hands, feeling useless. There had to be something she could do.
Suddenly, her thumb rubbed over something on the wand, something she'd never felt before. She stopped wallowing in her own self pity for a moment and looked down to see what she felt.
She wasn't sure what she was expecting, but it wasn't what she found.
On the end of the wand, there were three letters carved in the wand in fancy lettering; R.E.E.
Ellabelle had no idea what that meant, nor did she have the time to find out. Her mind returned to the thought of Hadley, and she shook her head. "Come on, Catra, it's time to get up."
