Eos
Lue stayed at Ellabelle's side.
He couldn't believe it. He'd been lied to his entire life. All this time, his mysterious sister was living right on the other side of the village from him.
Why would their parents leave them like this?
There had to be more to the story, he knew it. But what else was there to find? Their parents could have already been dead and they had no idea.
Lue soon realized that his whittled stick wasn't much help in the heat of battle, but it wasn't his weapon that mattered. He wanted to be by his little sister's side at all times. Lady Larkdale wouldn't touch a hair on her head.
"Why didn't you tell me sooner?" Lue asked as Larkdale shot beams of magic their way. They dodged them with light feet. At times, Lue had to pick up Ellabelle in order to protect her, since she didn't have the wings to do it herself.
"I sort of just found out, and I'm really sorry I wasn't more honest with you," Ellabelle replied, her tone low. "I was trying to figure out how to tell you, but I didn't know what to do. I guess I was still trying to understand everything myself."
"Save it, Eos." Larkdale snarled, zapping a piece of Ellabelle's hair, which caught on fire.
Ellabelle quickly patted her head to extinguish the flame.
"Now that your parents are gone and you two are the only ones left, I won't rest until your bloodline is through. This fairy world doesn't need any more selfish, ignorant, washed-up fairies like you two. Your parents would be so disappointed in what you've become." She stopped, tapping her chin with her wand. "Oh wait, I forgot, they're not here anymore. Oops."
Ellabelle sighed. She could feel her anger bubbling within her. She knew that Lady Larkdale was playing games with their minds. She had to stop her.
Or maybe, she didn't have to.
Meanwhile, Dask couldn't take his mind off of being there for Hadley. How had he let her go so easily last time? She slipped so quickly from his fingertips. He promised himself he wouldn't let that happen to them again, ever.
Lord Brilland struck a spell, releasing what looked to be thousands of live fireflies. They spun around in Dask, Hadley, Catra and Heartwinger's hair, tickling and making them want to crawl out of their skin. Heartwinger spun around, countering the spell with her own wand's magic. Her magic covered each firefly in little pink bubbles, popping and disappearing without a trace. She looked instantly satisfied with herself as Brilland gnashed his teeth.
"Snake." He replied flatly, readjusting his wand in his hand. His grip was sturdy and his bony hands were red and covered in swollen calluses.
"Give it up, Brilland. You're grossly outnumbered. There's no point in fighting anymore." Catra sighed, fluffing up her curls for emphasis.
"This Council has stood on its own for thousands of years. Our ancestors have done it the same way for generations without any of this backlash and rebellion," he spat.
"This is treason! This isn't what our ancestors wanted. Their motives were for the good of fairykind, not the selfishness of the council." Catra retorted, her cheeks getting flushed.
"You're just afraid of Lue and Ellabelle taking the thrones when you're gone, so you wanted to get rid of them." Heartwinger added, giving Dask and Hadley a nod.
Brilland shook his head. "This is foolishness. No other fairies have had these issues with our ways."
"None of them have had the guts to speak up!" Hadley retorted, throwing her hands in the air. "You've created such a blanket of fear that none of them could escape. You've brainwashed them into thinking that nothing is wrong with what you're doing."
Brilland thrashed himself at her, cracking his wand on Hadley's head. Her eyelids were coated with stars, and suddenly, her knees buckled and blood rushed out of her wound.
Dask fled to Hadley's side as the others fought behind them, each trying just as hard as the other. Her head now displayed a small slit in which blood began to rush from. Dask felt his jaw clench up and his eyes become heavy with tears. He quickly wiped them away to secure his manhood, then tried shaking Hadley awake. He couldn't make a sound, his vocal chords were tensed and shaking. Hadley remained on the hard floor of the sitting room, her emerald eyes glazed over and her breaths long and drifting away. Dask touched the fresh blood of her wound and glanced at it on his fingertips, shaking.
That was it. His last straw.
Ellabelle and Lue evaded Larkdale's attacks. They were so close to victory that they hardly even realized Dask closing in behind them. His pocket knife was opened and his eyes were locked on his enemies. He didn't want to make his innocent hands unclean with fairy's blood, but his senses were sharpened now that Hadley was unconscious just on the other side of the room.
Ellabelle whacked Larkdale's wand out of her hand, sending it shattering through one of the nearby windows. A cool breeze chilled up their spines, and Larkdale's once hard stare was suddenly shaken. Ellabelle and Lue looked at one another, then back at Lady Larkdale. As her wand fell down on the grassy earth, she looked as though she'd lost touch with reality. And, in a moment, she did.
Dask suddenly sprung up behind them, pinning Larkdale to the floor and staring deep within her soul, his pocket knife pointed directly at the base of her neck. Their breaths were nearly in sync with one another; they were both equally terrified of what was about to happen next.
"You're just a human boy," Lady Larkdale stammered, looking back and forth between the knife and Dask's furious face. Larkdale's nostrils flared and her neck tensed. "Don't kill me," she whispered softly.
"Then surrender," Dask said, carefully moving the knife closer, making Larkdale jump out of her skin. "Surrender your throne to Lue and Ellabelle or suffer the consequences."
Larkdale looked up. All the fairies surrounding them were watching attentively, holding their weapons back for a brief moment. Ellabelle quietly crept over to where Hadley laid, holding her in her arms. She listened carefully to the action across the room.
Lady Larkdale seemed to be stuck. She didn't move, hardly blinked, and made no sound.
"Well? Aren't you gonna say anything?" Catra asked, placing her hands on her hips.
Suddenly, Lady Larkdale smiled. She abruptly shoved Dask off of her, climbing atop her throne and standing before the others.
"You really think I am about to just surrender? You fools!" Her laugh echoed across the room like a demon in the night. "I have more power than all of you combined. A knife in your hand can't stop the most powerful magic in the fairy world. Hadley will die. All of you will die! You'll perish in the eldest soils of this land, rotting in the depths of the earth." And so Lady Larkdale continued, on and on, beating the dead horse over and over again. None of the fairies moved. None of them made an attempt on her life or spoke up. They just listened. They listened to her twist a web of darkness and lies, just as she'd been doing to them all this time.
As she spoke, Dask ran over to Hadley and Ellabelle again. Ellabelle was holding Hadley's lifeless hand.
"How is she?" He whispered.
It was apparent that Ellabelle had been crying as she spoke. "I don't know. I don't know."
Dask grabbed Hadley's other hand. Holding her hand was something that came almost naturally, but it felt wrong when her body was cold and pale. His emotions towards the fairies could only be described by words he wasn't allowed to say.
"She'll be out for a couple of hours. Give up! There's no point in trying to fight the powerful magic surrounding this building." Larkdale continued, adding a maniacal laugh or two.
Ellabelle and Dask looked at each other, then to Larkdale, then to the others. Dask ran his fingers along the grooves of his knife's handle, knowing he had to do something. He didn't have to finish the battle, but merely put a damper on it to level the playing field.
He crept quietly behind Larkdale's throne so that she wouldn't notice him. Ellabelle made eye contact with Heartwinger, signaling her to use her wand. Heartwinger nodded, closing in on the edges of the walls.
"Ok, Lady Larkdale. You win." Lue said with a shrug. He saw Dask closing in and decided to play along. "You can take Hadley."
Lady Larkdale licked her lips, her eyes hungry. "Excellent. I knew you were too foolish to defeat me." She said, pressing her fingertips together.
Before she could say another word, or take a step closer to her prey, Dask's knife cut through her large, extravagant wings like butter.
