Longing
The boys were having a heyday of a summer so far. When they weren't working or playing volleyball, they were off enjoying various attractions around Tokyo. Japanese summers were filled with festivals. The streets were lined up with endless food stalls by Tokyo Tower.
"Hey, Bokuto! No funny business with Makoto!" Matsuda called out as his teammate split off from the group with his date.
"We are going to get food. That's it, Cap!" Bokuto shouted from ahead at his new captain.
Suga stayed back with Matsuda and Kuroo. Things had felt a little empty lately. He had been hearing all about Mitsumi's grand adventures via video chat everyday. And it was always the highlight of his day. Right now, she should be on her way to Argentina. He probably wouldn't be hearing anything from his girlfriend at all.
The more he looked around at all the sweets stalls, the more he could hear her excited voice. He had come to miss her never ending sweet tooth and need for Dr. Pepper. Kuroo scanned the booths for a treat. "You're zoning out again. What time did you end up going to bed?"
"Oh-" Suga jolted back into reality. "I went to bed around one." He admitted with a bit of a disappointed tone. He was not one to stay up so late. "I was able to talk to Chie."
"Dude, you're dedicated." The rooster head slapped the setter on the back. "I don't even get to talk to her. She'll just text me." Kuroo was honestly offended by it. Especially since he was her 'beloved honorary older brother'.
Matsuda let out a hearty laugh as he ripped a piece off his yakitori. "Did you guys watch Takuma tear through Italy's defense last night? Like, son, take a chill pill! Ha!"
That's right. The Japanese men's team had won a really intense game against Italy last night. Koushi missed the last half of the game because Mitsumi had called. Just a few more weeks, and then she would be back.
...
The sun was hotter than Hades in Argentina. Mitsumi flopped on her hotel bed as soon as she and Saki entered. The two of them would be rooming together for the next week. Their flight had landed in Buenos Aires around 7 a.m. local time. The JNT had arrived at their hotel around 8 a.m. for their check in. Thankfully, this time difference was easy to calculate. It was a perfect 12 hour time difference.
Her roommate was in the shower, rinsing off all the gross airplane germs. So, Mitsumi decided now would be a good time to call. She popped her wireless earbuds in and stepped out onto the scorching balcony. At least it was shaded.
"Chie! You made it!" Suga was sitting in his living room playing video games with his cousins. "How was the flight?" He stood up and went to his room upstairs, where it was much quieter.
Mitsumi smiled at the sound of his voice. "It was long and boring. I'm glad to be on the ground." She leaned against the balcony railing with her phone in hand. Their hotel had a clear view of the ocean. She flipped her camera with a tap. "Check out the view we have this week."
"An ocean view? Aren't you guys out there for some special training?" Suga was a bit jealous that she was staying in an ideal vacation spot.
She giggled a little bit through her jet lag. "Yes, we are doing endurance training and some beach volleyball before the game at the end of the week. It'll help us adjust to the time." Mitsumi flipped the camera back around so he could see her. "What have you been up to?"
He sighed a bit and laid down on his bed. "Well, we had training this morning. And then I ran some errands for Aunt Nami. The guys wanted to go eat out at the festival over at Tokyo Tower. So, we went there." Suga was jealous of her globe-trotting endeavors. He knew that if she were able to take him, she would in a heartbeat.
"Oh, how did that go?" Mitsumi sat down on one of the cushioned patio chairs. "It sounds like fun."
He nodded, "Yeah, it was. I'm stuffed from all the food!" Suga patted his stomach. "I'm headed out to Karasuno next week to visit my family. I just booked my train tickets." He was looking forward to spending time with his family. It had been a while since he had seen them in person.
"I'm jealous. I love the countryside." She pouted a bit. Her phone vibrated with a message.
Setsuna Mamoru: I'm going to go exploring for some food. Want to come?
"Aw, Setsuna needs a buddy to go food shopping." Mitsumi sighed a little bit. "I'll send you pictures. Tell me if you want or need anything." She grinned childishly.
Suga held up a finger heart with a smile. "I love you to the moon and back. Go storm Buenos Aires for me!" He let out a small cheer.
She returned the finger heart. "Well of course. Tell your cousins I say hi! Love you too, Koushi." Mitsumi ended the call and opened Setsuna's message.
Mitsumi Chie: Sure! Everyone else is probably sleeping. So, I'll go with you.
Setsuna Mamoru: Thanks 'Tsumi!
Mitsumi assumed everyone else had gone to bed. She went back into her room and looked in the full length mirror on the door. She fixed her ponytail and checked her outfit. Luckily, she didn't need to change. "I'm headed out, Saki. Text me if you need something!"
"Grab me some snacks if you find anything good!" Saki shouted through the closed door. The sound of water running could still be heard.
...
The streets of Buenos Aires were lively. It was about lunchtime, so people were crawling out of their workspaces to find food. Unfortunately, neither of the two Japanese women spoke Spanish. Which, in turn, made this trip really difficult. However, with the aid of a translation app and the random English that littered signs, they managed to find a market.
"It's so different here compared to Tokyo." Setsuna yawned, the jet lag was finally starting to hit her.
Mitsumi nodded and looked at her GPS. "If we take a right, there should be a grocery store to our left." She looked up in satisfaction to see she was right.
"Tetsuya wants chips, Chihiro and Madoka require some bananas, and Hatsukoi and Matsuri said they wanted tea." Setsuna looked at the list she had gathered from their teammates while they were all still conscious.
They wandered the aisle with a cart and tried to navigate the store.
Mitsumi went to grab a samll case of water off a shelf. She turned to put it on the bottom rack of her cart. As she stood up to grab another case, she accidentally bumped into someone. "I'm so sorry!" She bowed out of instinct.
"Don't worry about it! I should have been paying attention." If the libero hadn't been mistaken, she understood every word she just heard. She gazed up at the tall, muscular young man in front of her and jumped. His fluffy maroon brown hair was neatly groomed with the bangs parted to the side. "Yahoo~ It's been a while, Bendy-chan. I didn't think you'd wander this far across the world." He tossed a casual peace sign. It was a relief to be speaking Japanese again.
"OIKAWA TOORU?!" Mitsumi shrieked in complete shock. "So you are here in Argentina! I thought it was a joke." Ah yes, the infamous Great King of Seijoh. The one who taught Kageyama. The devilish setter that mocked her every move when she'd visit his school's girls team for practice games. "And for your information, the name is Mitsumi. Not Bendy."
Setsuna shuffled behind her significantly shorter teammate in an attempt to hide. She made Mitsumi look extroverted. And that was a big deal. "You guys know each other?"
"High school volleyball. He was the captain of the Aoba Johsai Boy's team our third year." Mitsumi explained as she felt her teammate grab onto the hem of her sleeve out of habit. "He was quite annoying even though I'd be playing his counterparts." She said through gritted teeth.
"I go to the University of Buenos Aires now. I'm the setter on their team." Oikawa puffed his chest out proudly. It was strange not to hear a trail of fangirls flocking after him. "Oikawa Tooru is the name."
"Setsuna Mamoru, Japanese National Team's ace." Setsuna stepped out from behind Mitsumi. "We are training here this week and playing a game on Friday."
Oikawa leaned on his shopping cart. "It's being held at my university." He said with a grin, "I could give you a tour~"
"No way will we accept a tour from you, Crazykawa." Mitsumi shot him down in an instant.
He dramatically clutched his hands over his heart and slumped over as if he were injured. "You're so cold, Bendy-chan!"
"I was going to let you take a picture with me to send home, but I guess that isn't going to happen." Mitsumi tauntingly held her unlocked phone in her hand. The sight made him look at her with puppy dog eyes. "As an apology, you'll help us check out. Neither of us speak Spanish."
"Dang, you are cold." Setsuna mumbled. She was surprised by how commanding Mitsumi could be.
"Fine. That's a deal. I'll help you guys out." The male grumbled a bit. The last time he had been called out like that was by his best friend right before he stepped on the airplane.
Mitsumi grinned as if she had said nothing at all. "Alright, Setsuna! Let's get the rest of the snacks!"
...
As promised, Oikawa helped his old acquaintance out. They took a photo together with the help of Setsuna. Mitsumi was satisfied with the picture and immediately sent it to Madoka, Suga, and Nishinoya.
Setsuna and Mitsumi felt their stomachs growl. They hadn't eaten anything since they arrived.
"Is it too pushy for me to take you to a good spot for lunch?" Oikawa was really trying his luck. But the sense of familiarity was oddly comforting. He missed Japan more than he would care to admit.
"I don't mind." Setsuna knew they weren't pressed on time. Plus they didn't have much to do. Oh, and she was starving. "As long as the place doesn't mind us carrying groceries in."
Mitsumi nodded in agreement. "Good to see you've become a decent human being finally." She messed with Oikawa even more. Her jet lag made brought the worst out of her.
"Your tongue never dulls out." He whined again. "Have you ever had Tortas?" Oikawa led the two girls through the busy streets. He stopped in front of a small street stall. "They are the most delicious sandwiches known to mankind."
...
Suga was scrolling through his social media aimlessly. He was over at Kuroo and Bokuto's place killing time. He was laying on the sofa on his back as he listened to the other two play some games.
"Guys! Chie! Check this out!" Suga sat up and turned his phone around. Any time he saw anything about her, his honey eyes would light up.
Mitsumi had made a post on her official account and her private personal account. The first photo was her and the JNT in front of a "Welcome to Argentina" mural.
Buenos días, Buenos Aires! The sun is high and so are our hopes for this week's game! #VNL #RyuujinNippon #Argentina #Volleyball #Haikyuu
The irony of the photo was that if you looked hard enough, everyone looked wasted. But, the one on her personal page caught everyone off guard. Mitsumi, Setsuna, and Oikawa were holding Tortas in their hands while throwing peace signs.
Old friends, new places, and unexpected encounters. Thank you @TheGrand_KingOikawa for the spur of the moment city tour.
"Isn't that the guy Hinata and Kageyama were always talking about? I read about him in Monthly Volleyball." Bokuto studied the photo closely. He was jealous that Mitsumi seemed to have all the global connections. And they were the same age.
Kuroo hummed. Neither of them had ever encountered the Great King. Let alone play against him. But between what they had heard from those who have, he could deduce that Oikawa Tooru was a threat to anyone on the court. "She seems to be doing fine." He clicked through the girl's social media story. It was littered with travel photos and videos of the JNT challenging each other at beach volleyball.
As long as she was enjoying herself, that's all that mattered.
