Yemaya
Yemayá
Mighty princess
Yours are the oceans
And rule over the seas
With wisdom and greatness.
Water is life and so do you
Your ebony skin
Bronzed by the tropical sun
You dress in silky blue.
The ruffles of your dress
Are the ocean waves
Pearls and corals and crystals
Are the beads on your necklace.
You're the mother that nurtures
Your big round breasts
Feed the the world
And all living creatures.
Sea queen is loving and caring
In the water she dances and play.
She takes care and of her own
Wise and forgiving.
But if you ever mess with her kin
Yemayá will get outraged
Wielding up her machete
And in this fight she will win.
***Yemayá is an African deity. She comes to us from the African slaves that were brought to the island to work on the sugar cane fields. Their culture is deeply rooted in our ethnicity as well as music, religion and vocabulary.
