Huracan
Huracán
Like a roaring wave, the strung gusts clashed against the trees bending them to crack down. The palm trees, a minute ago crowned the forest with elegance, but now they convulsed to the power of the raging winds. In the yucayeque by the river -now more like a rabid monster advancing through the woods clear flooding half of the rustic village- the bohíos were shattered, dismantled piece by piece and the logs and bunches of hay flew all over the place to land nowhere. Women, men and children ran for their lives leaving everything behind to hide in the nearby caves.
It was noon but even the Sun god hid behind the dense curtains of gray and black clouds. Like cutting stones, rain fell down digging trenches on the clay-red hill slopes. "Huracan is angry! He's come with all his mighty winds and light beams. We must have offended him in any form", the tribe's bohique spoke to his people while peeping out the cavern.
A few minutes later the winds ceased, the sky cleared and the sun shone. The survivors ventured to walk outside. Naked women and children recollected fruits scattered over the muddy floor and men gathered some wood and piled them inside the cave. "Has he gone?" The cacique asked the sorcerer. It was in that precise moment when a tree branch landed right in front of the two village leaders. In the distance a thunder broke and a flock of parrots rushed off the woods in deranged formation.
"No, he's coming back! Run!" And they hustled into the caves again.
