Chapter 31
Min Seol tapped her fingers nervously against her thigh as she walked down the bustling streets of Seoul. It was around lunch time so the paths were packed with people rushing around to get their lunch or head back to work on time.
The cool sun reflected off the puddles that formed in the cracks and dents of the wide pavement. The light gleaming off the concrete as the light bounced off the moisture that coated everything outside. It was was sunny but gloomy at the same time.
The atmosphere was grey and everything was damp from the rain fall that morning, but the sun tainted the air a warm amber. Min Seol loved it but she couldn't be as calm as she would like to be in this uncommon state of weather.
She was heading to where she threw the pen bomb. Not for work however. This time, she was going there to meet someone. Nervous wasn't the word to describe the feeling she felt in the pit of her empty stomach.
The familiar metal rails cameninto her view and a gust of the chilling wind blew her hair into her face, sticking her locks to her red lipstick.
She groaned at the feeling of her hair attached to her lips and raised her hand up, looping her fingers around and carefully pulled her hair away. As she ran her fingers through her hair wiping the coloured makeup away, she turned and saw a familiar blonde heading towards her with a smile.
Min Seol smiled back and cleared her throat, trying to not act as awkward as she felt knowing he more than likely saw that whole scene play out. He looked so good dressed in all black. His black turtleneck jumper and long black peacoat made his light hair stand out even more.
He was just as stunning as he was last time they met in person. They had just messaged each other since then, as Min Seol was working and got shot which she had to hide from him.
Minghao sent her a small wave with an open grin, making Min Seol laugh and walk to meet him half way.
"Wind got the best of you?" He joked, reaching up and tucked a rogue strand of her dark hair behind her ear. She was surprised by his sudden move but loved it and thought it was sweet.
"Yeah, you could say that." She said laughing awkwardly.
"You look great don't worry. Your lipstick is still perfect." He assured, smiling warmly at her. He could tell she was a little off about that, so he wanted to make her know he thought nothing of it. "Let's go, it looks like it's gonna rain any minute." He suggested. Min Seol instinctively looked up at the cloudy sky and nodded, walking towards the city with Minghao close by her side.
______
The two somehow looped arms as they walked. Probably because Min Seol's leg was hurting and wanted to use Minghao to help relieve the weight off it, and also because that was an excuse to get closer with him. He didn't know which reason it was but he wasn't complaining.
They both walked through the streets that were now void of lunch goers, and were more calm and relaxed. The pair both chatted happily while Minghao looked out for the familiar cafe he wanted to take Min Seol.
"Ah, here it is." He exclaimed and lead her into the large cafe. He pushed open the glass door and held it for Min Seol who thanked him as she walked in.
Min Seol's eyes went wide in awe as she scanned the shop. It was bright and open, also minimalistic which she really liked. One wall behind the counter was painted a bright pink, whilst the other walls were pure white. The counter was made from light coloured wood and looked spotless.
Min Seol briefly felt Minghao's hand on the small of her back, and as she turned to look at him he was looking around for a nice table.
"Have you eaten already?" He asked her and finally made eye contact. He moved his hand from her back as he realised it was there, he didn't want to seem to forward and scare her away.
"Not yet." She answered. "I'm starving actually." She admitted, making Minghao smile.
"Ah good. Sit wherever, I'll get something for you. My treat." He said and sent her a dazzling smile.
"Oh, no I can pay." She laughed. She felt bad whenever someone bought things for her, even if she was on a date and it seemed socially obligatory that the guy pays.
"My treat." He simply repeated before heading toward the counter. Min Seol just sighed as he seemed as stubborn as her, and knew there was no changing his mind.
Min Seol chose a table for two right by the large floor-to-ceiling window, with a view where she could see everything outside. Taking off her jacket and putting it over the back of her chair, she took in a content breath and rested her chin on her palm.
She wasn't there long before a cup of coffee was placed on the table in front her her, followed by a slice of lemon cheesecake. Her mouth fell open at the sight, but looked up at Minghao when he held a small fork in front of her face.
"I got the coffee you got last time and I assume you like cheesecake, because it's cheesecake. How can you not like it." He said. He was worried she wouldn't like his choice and he regretted going to get it himself but he played it off. "If you don't like it, I can get you something else and I'll gladly have it instead." He added with a small wink, making Min Seol laugh.
"Unlucky for you, I do like cheesecake." She smirked and scooped a piece off with her fork, eating it quickly. "So thanks."
"No problem. I didn't want it anyway..." he pretended to sulk making Min Seol laugh again.
The time flew by with the conversation flowing seamlessly. It started to get dark since in the winter months the sun left early, reminding them of the time.
"I should get going." Min Seol said sadly, looking at the clock on her phone. Minghao's face looked a little sad by her statement and she noticed. "We'll do this again." She stated.
"Tomorrow maybe..?" Minghao suggested, sounding unsure since it was a pretty bold statement. "I've got nothing to do tomorrow so I'm free." He added, trying to make it sound like he had more of a reason for her to agree.
"The weather's meant to be awful tomorrow, do you have a car or something?" Min Seol asked, as she didn't want the predicted rain to ruin her hair and make her look like a wet dog. She really liked Minghao and wanted to feel nothing but confident around him since she feels it's a good quality she has. The rain however could wash away that trait easily.
"No, but I thought maybe a movie day at my place?" Minghao suggested. When Min Seol's eyes widened slightly he realised how it sounded. "Or the cinema and I bring an umbrella?" He quickly said, putting another suggestion out there that didn't sound so risky.
"Movie day at yours sounds fine." She chuckled. Her smile dropped however as she glanced out the window and saw two very familiar figures running past, the weapons in their hands glinting at her. Her mouth fell open.
"Ah okay, that's great." Minghao sighed in relief, not noticing the girls shocked expression as he was finishing the rest of his drink.
"Uh. I really need to go now. Something-" Min Seol started to say as she got up from her hair and started putting her jacket back on. She stopped when she saw another familiar figure running past again, this time with two weapons. One in each hand. "What the fuck?" She said out loud by accident.
"What's up?" Minghao asked, now noticing the conflicted and confused face of his date. "You alright?" He asked cautiously.
"I'll text you tonight." Min Seol said, looking at an equally confused Minghao. "Thank you so much for all of this, it was lovely. I really enjoyed myself." She thanked sincerely and without thinking bent down and kissed his cheek as she went to go past him to the cafe's exit. "I'll see you tomorrow!" She called as she awkwardly half jogged out the door. "Hopefully..." she muttered.
The cold winter air engulfed her and she wrapped her jacket around her frame even tighter. Running in the direction she saw the two run in before, her leg started to hurt slightly. She waved at Minghao through the window as he sent her a confused look. She would explain later, if she wasn't injured that is.
Pulling out her phone she dialled the number of the first person she could think of that would have answers.
"Hey hey hey~!" An excited sounding Dae-Hyun greeted down the phone. "Oh shit you went on you're date didn't you?! How did it go?" He practically yelled.
"What's going on? Why did I see Inha, Kai-Ling, and Taeyang running with guns down the street?!" She asked, ignoring his questions she could answer later.
"Ooh! You saw them? Small world." He laughed. "Uh, there has been a slight breech in unit 14. They're trying to control the situation, it's all good I think." He answered.
"Right. Thanks." She bluntly replied.
"Wait don't go there-" He started to say but got cut off as Min Seol hung up and shoved her phone into her jacket pocket again.
Heading towards the unit building she reached into a pocket on the inside of her jacket and pulled out a small pen like instrument she made.
The building came into view and she could hear unusual noises coming from it already. She wondered why she was getting herself involved, but carried on anyway.
She was crossing the road, heading for the entrance but Taeyang ran out, making her stop for a second.
He was breathing heavily and had his two pistols, one in each hand. He looked around quickly and frowned when he saw Min Seol running towards him.
"What are you doing here?" He asked, utterly confused. She opened her mouth to answer but Taeyang's eye caught onto a familiar looking vehicle. "Get down!" He yelled at her and grabbed her shoulder, making her crouch behind the parked cars on the side of the street.
He stayed standing and held up both guns, aiming at the blue and black car heading their way. He shot the driver causing the car to swerve and crash into a parked one. However shots started firing at him, forcing him to take cover behind a small red car next to Min Seol.
"Are you even armed?!" He yelled at Min Seol. She sheepishly held up her homemade weapon, and with Taeyang not knowing what it was, rolled his eyes. "Don't go inside Inej and Zero are kicking ass." He warned. Rain started to fall and soaked the two immediately. "Even if it is dry in there, it's fucking raining bodies and knives instead." He chuckled.
"I can help!" Min Seol exclaimed.
"Not with that fucking sonic screwdriver you can't!" He yelled again, peeking around the frame of the car before retreating again as he was shot at. "I'll take these guys out and you go!"
"Give me a pistol and I'll help, Wolf." She said and held her hand out. Taeyang looked at his precious pistol, and then at her hand. He was going to refuse until a bullet narrowing missed him. He then carefully threw one of the pistols at her which she caught. He needed the extra cover.
_______
Inha threw a knife across the room filled with organised stacks of drugs, hitting a Nobody henchman in his throat. She turned to see Kai Ling lashing a guy with her talon-like nails across the face, making him cry out before she sliced his torso with the knife clutched in her other hand.
The sound of heavy thuds upstairs grabbed Inha's attention and she sprinted to the stairs. Taking two steps at a time she arrived on the third floor and saw a large stack of drugs fall to the floor, creating another loud thud. White power spilled out the packages and Inha laughed in annoyance, then looked at the culprits that were running around to push more over.
She hadn't been spotted yet so she decided to go the sneaky way, just for a bit of fun.
Crouching slightly she took light steps around the stacks, using them as cover. She went off the sounds the henchmen made to map her route. When she rounded a corner the sound of grunting as one of the henchmen was trying to push over the heavy tower got louder, she knew he was on the other side of the pile she was hiding behind.
Acting quickly she jumped from around the corner and stabbed him in the neck, using her other hand to cover his mouth so he didn't make a noise. She missed being stealthy.
As Inha was being sneaky upstairs, Kai Ling went for a different approach. Kill every enemy in any means possible.
She mainly used her claw-like nails to slash people before bashing their heads in or use one of her knives she had on her to finish them off.
"Hey-" an unfamiliar voice said behind her. Acting on instinct she turned around and grabbed the guy by his threat before kicking his feet from under him. He fell to the floor and landed on his back with a heavy thud before he could utter another word. His eyes widened as he felt Kai Ling's nails against his neck, about to break the skin. "Hey! Hey! I can h-help you!" He managed to say, even with Kai Ling's tight grip around his throat.
Kai Ling narrowed her eyes at the guy. She saw as his hands grasped around her wrist in an attempt to pry her hand away, her eyes locked onto a familiar tattoo on his wrist.
"You're one of them. The only way you can help me is by letting me kill you easily." She muttered to him, leaning forward slightly which made his eyes go wider. Kai Ling saw as his eyes looked behind her quickly.
"Look! Look!" He repeated with urgency. Kai Ling thought it could be a way of escaping but she looked anyway.
To her surprise she saw a Nobody girl running at her with a blade in her hand. Kai Ling reached for one of her own and effortlessly threw it at the girl, hitting her square in the head. When her body fell she turned back to the scared looking boy she still had her grip on.
"I-if I didn't want to h-help you, why-why would I stop y-you from being killed?!" He argued.
Kai Ling narrowed her eyes at him again as he gasped for some air and struggled. He reminded her of a pug behind held, wriggling in every direction as if it would help their situation.
"Why are you 'helping' me?" Kai Ling asked, her voice heavy with suspicion. The guy pointed to her hand around his neck and Kai Ling loosened her grip a little, making him gasp as he could now breath.
"I don't want to help Kyungil anymore. He treats us like we're his slaves and I don't like his cause. You-you guys are treated like equals to Zeno! M-my skills are disregarded, yours are a-appreciated. I just want to help fight for a side I want to be o-on." He stuttered. Kai Ling chewed the inside of her cheek for a moment before letting go of his throat and stood up.
"What's your name?" She asked bluntly. The guy sat up and looked up at Kai Ling, rubbing his throat that had five small puncture wounds on it.
"Baekhyun. And yours?" He asked, a small faint smile on his pretty and thin lips.
"You'll call me Zero." She stated and looked around the room littered with bloody bodies. She walked to the window as she heard gunshots outside.
"Thanks Zero. I-" Baehyun started to say but stopped as Kai Ling held up her hand for him to stop talking, which he did. Kai Ling tried not to smile as he really did remind her of a puppy, an obedient one at that.
Her eyes looked down to the wet street outside the building and saw not only Taeyang but also Min Seol being shot at.
"What..?" She whispered to herself.
She looked back at Baehyun who was looking at her innocently. Her eyes darted back to the window as she heard Taeyang's voice.
"Ow! Oh for fucks sake! You're all gonna fucking die now!" He yelled.
Kai Ling's eyes honed in on his arm that was now bleeding and he couldn't seem to use. She assumed he was shot in the arm. His white shirt clinging to his body was now red on his sleeve, confirming her assumption.
"Why's he always getting shot..." she muttered to herself as she turned around. Waving at Baekhyun to get up and follow her, she headed for the stairs to the bottom floor. "Come on." She commanded and he followed. "You're like an obedient puppy aren't you?" She chuckled. Baekhyun's loud and hearty laugh filled the dead room.
"I've been told before."
"I could make use of you." Kai Ling said, making Baekhyun smile. The smile dropped however when she turned around quickly and pointed a sharp finger nail at his face, cutting his cheek threateningly. "But if you ever go against us, I'll be sure to kill you in a way only traitors deserve."
"I won't. I s-swear." He stammered, eyes wide again. Kai Ling couldn't help but think he was adorable.
"You are a traitor after all." She added with a smirk, limply holding up his arm with the tattoo on. "Don't wanna be a traitor to two very deadly organisations now do you?"
Baekhyun shook his head vigorously. One was organisation was more than enough.
