Prologue
She rested her head on her arm as she leant against the car window, watching the green fields run past her and melt into rows of houses. A sigh escaped her lips as she stared blankly, her heart pounding and stomach churning, unable to comprehend her own emotions and whether she was nervous, excited or a mixture of the two. All her life she had been home schooled and now she was finally attending a public school for the first time ever. In all honesty, she was unsure how to feel.
"Are you okay mam?" Her chauffer Chris asked, a slight hint of concern in his voice that was barely noticeable.
"I think so" she mumbled, refusing to take her eyes off of the scenery outside, even if it was just the rainy British weather and dull houses. "I mean, today is my first day of school. Ever. 15 years and I've hardly ever stepped outside so all of a sudden going to a new place full of people...it is a bit nerve racking"
"You did ask your parents if you could though. This was your decision"
"I know" she sighed. "And I do want to go, badly. It is just all so new to me and I am worried about fitting in"
Chris had to stiffle a giggle, trying to reassure her. "I'm sure someone like you will be absolutely fine Katherine"
"I mean, I suppose so. But the issue is, I want people to like me for me and not for who my family are"
Before either of them could say another word, the car came to a halt, jolting Katherine. She sat up straight and took a moment to observe her surroundings. Infront of her loomed a large, white building with hundreds, maybe thousands of children scattered infront in groups. She took a deep breath, unclipped her seat belt, picked up her bag and opened the door. Before she could step outside, she felt a familiar hand grip her arm. Turning around, she saw Chris with a small yet gentle smile on his lips.
"You'll be okay Katherine. I promise. And you can always call me or your parents, you know that"
Without warning, he was enveloped in a massive hug as she rested her head on his shoulder, a slight smile creeping across her lips.
"Thank you Chris" she mumbled softly before composing herself. Mustering all the courage she could, she stepped outside and straightened her skirt, gazing at the building infront of her.
This was it. The start of a new beginning.
