My birthday...

Yey!!!

10 years old...

I wonder what she's got planned...

I jump outta bed and ready myself for school like a big boy!!!

Daddy's already off to work...

Good...

I really didn't want to see him anyway...

She seemed distracted...

She didn't even seem to realize that I was standing there...

I ask, "Are you alright Mama?"...

Yes baby... Happy Birthday...

She gave me a big hug and a pat on the head...

I looked around...

No signs of anything for my birthday...

But she has always been good at surprising us...

So off to school I go...

Anticipation is driving me crazy...

Wondering what I will get when I get home...

Hurrying as fast as I can I make it home to an empty house...

No cake smell drifting throughout the house...

Still no wrapped presents insight!!!

I called out...

There was no answer...

I get a snack and sit down at the kitchen table...

The front door opens and closes...

But it's only my sisters...

"Where's Mama???" they asked...

I didn't even answer...

I plop down on the sofa and wait...

Finally she comes through the door....

She has nothing in her hands...

She says "How was school today"

I tell her that it was boring...

"Well I've got exciting news for you!!!" she says...

I perk up...

"You are going to have a little brother or sister soon..." she says...

I can't imagine the look of disappointment on my face but I did see her face...

I knew that she was not happy with my response...

She asked..."What's wrong???"

"I don't want no little brother or little sister..."

She said, "Well I thought that at least you would be happy..."

"Some birthday..." I muttered...

She said, "Like it or not, we're having a baby... And this baby will give you all something to do when I am not around..."

"Now..." she said, "Let's get you what YOU want!!! Girls!!! Come on..."

That's when my sisters came in and wished me a happy birthday...

Life was changing in ways that none of us could have imagined...

My tenth birthday was actually a notice that life was never going to be the same for any of us...

I was the first to hear the news...

Which later in life let me know just how important my happiness was to my mother...

It was time for me to grow up...
