I asked a friend once, if he knew how long it for life to totally and completely change???

He said that he would have to guess not long...

Not quite the answer that I was seeking, but it did suffice...

Years had past and I not seen or heard from my friend...

I asked around...

No one really knew what had become of him...

Then one day with no notice my friend appeared before me again...

He was almost unrecognizable, he had thinned and his haggard face was drawn...

But his unmistakably voice called out my name...

My friend smiled what seemed to be the first smile that his face had known in years...

We talked for a while and rekindled times long gone from both of our lives...

He brought up the time when had asked him how quickly life could change totally and permanently...

He told that he had spent the past twenty years on a life sentence in a maximum security prison in the great state of New York...

I recalled that the last time that I had seen him he talked about no longer worrying about getting into trouble because he was leaving town soon...

He told me that just days after our last visit together that he had gotten on a bus for New York City, where he was to go to work for his uncle...

He said that the night he arrived in the "Big City", that his cousin picked him up at the bus station. He said that he ask his cousin to stop at the nearest liquor store...

He told me that as he exited the store three young boys had surrounded him and tried to rob him. He said before he knew it he had stabbed one of the boys to death...

He said that his life had changed totally and completely in a matter of seconds....
