Don't Burn Bridges

I remember an old saying, "Don't burn bridges."

I have always felt that was pretty good advice

Although it was sound advice, I have burned quite a few bridges

Mostly due to my poor judgement

Because of things such as anger, spite, stubbornness, envy, ignorance

My list, as the number of bridges burned goes on and on

There are those other bridges...

The ones that I burned strategically

The ones that because I never wanted to be rebuilt that I used explosive force to destroy

Telling myself that it was to keep unwanted situations away, to keep me out of harm's way

Telling myself that it was to save others from encounters that I knew would not end well

Usually, regardless of the reason, the outcome was pretty much the same

Time wasted, as I frantically tried to patch or rebuild from the damage that I had caused

Today, bridges are do important to my life

Damaging or destroying bridges in my life now is an even bigger waste of time than it was in my younger life

Today's bridges have withstood so much and become so meaningful

I am now maintaining my bridges and protecting my bridges' integrity

I have even installed tollbooths for some of my bridges to remind me of the value of my bridges
