iii. night music
the melody of midnights
drifts through lonely streets
around glowing halogen lamps
like a flitting songbird
bathed in sunlit dawns
as i close my eyes
during this lonely night walk
listening to this song
i hear
the chirps of crickets
delicate autumn flute
blending with the soft
rustling of fiery maple leaves
falling like tangerine sparks
as flickering streetlights
buzz and crackle
at overcast skies
i hear
the dripping of november rain
on paint flecked windowsills
puddles splashing underneath
as my boots crunch
on coarse muddy gravel
and distant ocean waves
crash on salt stained piers
echoes from the past
i hear
the old conversations
of starlit walks over
graveled park paths
the old dreams
whispered between breaths
warm in the cool night
staticky radio songs
drifting from abandoned cars
as i slump down alone
tears brimming my eyes
the music of the night
washes over me
trying to comfort me
a chorus of nightingales
of distant summers
singing away the loneliness
but the ghost of you
lingers in the air
the briny gales and salty air
broken memories of you
that i thought i left behind
