Up Close and Personal
"Found a ship captain!" You came in a little fast, having to tuck and roll as you hit the deck. You made it look good though, getting to your feet and marching to the higher ups with little effort.
"About time! Where are we going?" Kid cackled happily, ready for blood.
"Northeast of the ship, they'll be in sight soon. They're traveling in the same direction so it'll take a bit to catch them."
"No it won't. Go fuck up their sails for me, only half of them. I want them to think they have a chance."
You nodded and took off. Kid was one sadistic bastard.
It would take less than an hour for Kid to reach the ship of no name pirates with you slashing sails. If you had it your way you'd ruin more of the ship to make it faster, he was a bit intense when he wanted a fight and you'd like to get it done so he could tone it down a bit. But you weren't about to see if you could test his patience like Killer does.
So you did as he asked, darting around the enemy ship and shredding half of their sails. You left before they even knew what hit them. It'd look like a freak accident when they check the damage.
When you got back, the entire crew had a similar energy to their captain, their usual laid back attitude replaced with barely contained excitement for a fight.
"Do you need anything besides that knife?" Heat approached you, a glint in his eye that you'd never seen from him.
"Nah, guns and swords aren't my thing." You wanted a bow but that'd have to wait. You could talk to Kid about getting a cut of the treasure when you got to it and buying yourself one. You were the one that got the map after all.
"Wire has some options for spears and tridents." He offered. You were starting to think he was afraid you wouldn't be effective if you weren't better armed.
"I've tried using things like that before. They throw me off balance and are a bit too heavy, especially ones his size." You pointed out how much taller than you Wire was, his trident standing at the same height.
"Hmm." Heat nodded. "Stick close to someone in case you need help."
"Thanks for the concern but I'll be fine." You were a little miffed.
He'd seen you fight first hand. Sure you lost in the end but it was two against one and there wasn't the normal chaos of a surrounding battle. You did pretty good then all things considered.
When the ship came into view Kid was delighted to see it covered in decorative metal plating. He took great joy in using it to slowly pull them towards his own. The closer it got the louder the crew became, shouting insults and slurs to the other pirates. For once you actually felt ready for a fight. You wouldn't be stuck doing all the work yourself and you knew these guys could take care of themselves. It was kind of funny having guys like Heat worry more for your personal safety than their own.
A few more loud jeers came from your side as the other ship was close enough to dock and the fighting ensued. The others looked terrified to be up against the infamous Kid pirates but still threw themselves into the thick of things. You shot up and did the same, swooping in from above and cutting enemy pirates in some choice places. You aimed for the neck if it was visible, otherwise cutting along limbs and slashing faces to deter them and give your fellow crew mates openings to finish them off.
Your favorite thing to do was kick any men that were a little too close to the railings overboard. It never failed to draw out pitiful yelps of surprise and clear up some space. You sent Heat a confident wave as you lazily sailed by, not a scratch on your body while he bled from a cut on his arm and looked a little roughed up. He got the picture. You could handle yourself just fine.
Kid and Killer were fighting together, the latter taking care of anyone who got to close to his captain while Kid took out multiple men at once from a distance. He had sent a tornado of swords, guns, and anything else metal across the ship to take out anyone unlucky enough to not see it coming. Killer's blades were something you'd never seen before, they attached to a set of sturdy gauntlets and spun around dangerously. He bounced around and sliced in ways that told you he wasn't trying too hard when he fought you.
But his defense wasn't perfect. One man slipped closer than any other, eyes glued to Kid with the sole purpose of sinking the dagger he had in hand into your Captain's back. Not on your watch.
You dove down from the side, foot planting itself firmly to his chest. He fell flat on his back with you standing on him. There was a solid sounding crack as his head slammed into the wooden deck and he dropped the weapon, knocked out cold.
"Good catch." Kid snickered. "We'll keep him alive to play with later."
You shuddered at the thought and kicked the dagger to the side in case the man woke up before someone got to him. He was going to be wishing he were dead soon enough.
The rest of the fight went smoothly. You had a hard time breaking out of your old habit of dipping around and covering for anyone you thought needed it but no one complained any. Damage control is what you'd done for so long that it'd take a while to get used to no longer having to do it.
By the time it was done, both ships were covered in equal parts blood and gore. It was a messy sight to say the least. Two pirates were kept alive to satisfy what was left of Kid's sadistic needs, one being the man you stopped from stabbing him. He dragged them both kicking and screaming down to a private room and wasn't seen again for a while. It wasn't hard to tell what he was up to.
The rest of you got busy tossing bodies into the sea and scrounging around the now empty ship for anything useful. You were part of the latter group, unable to lift the bodies up and toss them overboard without a serious struggle. Killer and Wire joined you while Heat stayed back to watch over the clean up process.
"They don't have a whole lot handy." You picked through their kitchen pantry, not finding many edible options.
"I've seen ghost ships better stocked than this." Wire agreed, slamming the fridge door closed and joining you to collect what you'd found that was in decent shape.
"It's free, can't complain too much." Killer grunted behind you.
"Anything's free when you're a pirate~" You giggled, getting a couple small laughs from Wire. "Seriously though, there's nothing else in here we could use."
"Check out the infirmary and Captain's quarters then. I'm going to look for some kind of storage room." Killer went off on his search, leaving you and Wire together.
"Hopefully they have more medical supplies than food." You stepped around Wire and led the way.
The infirmary was just as bare as the kitchen. All you could find was some spare gauze and an unopened bottle of rubbing alcohol. There was nothing else that hadn't been opened or already used and you didn't trust any of it. The room was filthy and you didn't doubt any open containers would be equally as nasty.
The Captain's quarters were much more promising. It was relatively clean and much more organized than anything else you'd seen so far.
"We could find something good here..." Wire practically read your mind as he dumped his current haul on the bed to look around.
And you did. Right above the bed was a hanging display and on it, a bow. It was intricately carved and in perfect shape, untouched. The ends curved up delicately and the wood shone with a luster that suggested it was maintained regularly. The previous owner must have picked it up without knowing how much it was worth, deciding it was a better show piece than anything. You scrambled onto the bed to get to it, drawing your friend's attention.
"We could sell that for a nice sum."
"No we won't." It was extremely lightweight and well balanced. You'd be hard pressed to find similar craftsmanship anywhere. "I've been looking for something like this for a while. I wonder if there's a quiver somewhere."
Wire puzzled over your interest in the weapon but helped you look. After a while, he found it hidden away in a closet, looking like it had seen much better days in the past.
"Seriously? He couldn't bother to take care of this too?" You groaned, wondering how much of the leather you could save.
It looked like it had sat in stagnant water for ages and then never got dried out properly. The detailed stitching that matched the bows carvings was pulled and ruined in multiple spots. The whole thing was horribly discolored and smelled questionable.
"Why's that so important? A gun would be better."
"Guns get a little heavy and aren't easy to reload in the air. A well made bow is much easier to use. I just need to fix this and see what I can do for arrows."
You tested the bow string, pulling it back with a bit of effort. It must had been restrung somewhat recently, it was stiff but not brittle. A bit of work and it'd be easy to handle.
"There's spare leather on the ship we could use for that." Wire gathered up the haul, a few new things from the cabin added to it.
"Somehow that doesn't surprise me." The crew wore a lot of leather. A lot.
"Yeah yeah, quit playing with that and let's go feathers. I'm in the mood for a drink."
"Are you really going to call me that?" You stomped out of the room after him.
"Yep." He laughed, plucking out a loose feather and blowing it in your face.
Kid was bad enough, you didn't want the whole crew calling you that. Not like they'd listen to you though.
