Fly By
(A/n)
The picture is of the wyvern, he's the first character I ever made so he's a special boi. He's gone through a ton of changes as I've had him and gotten better with drawing and this is the most recent rendition of him. I made a full body piece of him and that will be at the bottom of the chapter. He may be in some future fanfics as well.
You hardly had enough time to throw yourself in the air to avoid the creature. It had arched its neck around in an attempt to skewer you on one of the spines, that would have definitely been a painful death, something you weren't interested in.
You thought about firing an arrow off at it but it's hide looked too thick to pierce. Outflying it was your best option. If you were lucky and fast enough, you could use the island to damage it. There were plenty of dangerous rocks and trees to maneuver through. And with your much smaller size, it'd be easy. You couldn't say the same for the wyvern, anything you could get around would be a real struggle for it. In theory at least.
It locked eyes with you again, letting out another scream as it pushed off the ground to reach you in the air. While it's spines and teeth would be an issue, you now noticed an even bigger one. It's tail was easily as long as it's body and snapped around in the air aggressively, a small bundle of more needle like spines protruding from the end. That would spell more than a bit of trouble if it hit you. At least the creature couldn't breath fire as far as you could tell. Though there was a cyan glow to it's throat that troubled you.
Just as you thought it might, the wyvern flicked it's tail in your direction, snapping it like a whip. You did a barrel roll out of the way and sailed above it, keeping it's focus away from Kid and the rest of the crew. They had picked up the pace and were scrambling up a bit higher, following a narrow trail to a visible clearing. That had to be the spot.
The creature was becoming frustrated with you, not accustomed to having prey allude it with little difficulty. It chose to fly at you head on instead, abandoning the prior attempts of pulling you to the ground. That was just what you wanted.
"I'll see you guys at the ship!" You shouted as you flipped around and dove, skimming close to the mountainside.
A scream close behind let you know the wyvern was following, nipping at your heels. It was heavier than you and going downhill like this, it was bound to be able to fall faster and catch up if you didn't act appropriately. If you dropped a little closer to the side of the mountain, you could use the trees to your advantage. So you tucked your wings in and dropped like a stone, spreading them open a bit again once you were in the forest and dodging through the branches and snow to avoid getting taken out yourself.
You dared a look over your shoulder for a split second, seeing the purple blur crashing through trees behind you. Snow was slung into the air with every impact, along with splintered wood. It was dead set on getting to you for some reason, no matter what it had to go through. All you could guess was it had to do with you having wings too. It was a stretch but who knew what a wyvern thought about besides it's next meal.
All you could tell for sure was that bringing it through the trees wasn't doing anything besides piss it off. You'd never seen a tougher creature.
"Time for plan B." You grit your teeth and threw yourself to the side, noticing a nearby group of rocks that were sticking out pretty far.
You misjudged how close you could get to them, tumbling across them before launching back into the air just in time to hear your scaled friend slam into them. It was getting too close for comfort. That did the trick though. You hovered in the air, watching as the wyvern shook off the rubble. The front two spines on its head were broken off from the impact, leaving it with two little ragged nubs. Blood flowed freely from a crack on it's skull and it looked to be in a bit of a daze. But it wasn't done.
It shook it's head and glared at you, it's cyan throat glowing brightly as it prepared to unleash something from it's spot on the ground. Slits on either side of it's muzzle began to glow the same glaring color and it let out it's loudest shriek yet. Pissed was an understatement now.
The glow crept up the creatures throat and you dove to the ground, fully expecting blue flames to spill from it's mouth. What came out was worse. It was an attack you couldn't see but if it hit, you'd surely be killed. It was like a sonic boom, strong enough to jerk the wyvern's body back with the force. A blue mist filtered through its now closed jaws and nostrils, like a smoking gun.
"Oh hell no." You scrambled to your feet and quickly became airborne once again, flying further down the mountain.
Kid and Killer had enough time to get their shit together, you needed to shake this monster off your tail fast. But it still wasn't done with you. It didn't want you scared off, it wanted you dead. There was a sudden pain lacing your leg as it had caught back up and swung it's tail around to sink the needles into your flesh.
You jerked away with a cry, taking a few needles with you. They were embedded in your calf but you couldn't yank them out yet. They'd have to stay put until you'd made your escape. So you grit your teeth and leveled out with the mountain, it was flat ground now and you were running out of ideas.
But when in doubt, you always flew up. A change in perspective could always lead to you finding something useful. You took a deep breath and pumped your now tiring wings harder, pushing up with a mounting sense of urgency. When you looked back down, there was only a couple seconds to get a lay of the land before rolling to the side and avoiding being bitten. It's teeth weren't huge but they looked razor sharp and there were a lot of them. It was close enough that you could smell it's rancid breath and see the whites of it's eyes.
You'd found a solution to deal with this creature though. The few seconds you had were just enough. You just had to get in position. With renewed energy, you threw yourself closer to the clouds and above the edge of the island, not far from where the ship was docked. Once your lungs were straining from the effort and you were in the thick of the clouds, you let yourself drop.
The wyvern didn't expect that, pulling to the side for a second to watch you fall before diving after you. You went straight down, tucking your wings and twisting your body to add spin and hopefully, increase your speed. It followed blindly, screeching furiously as it crept closer despite your best efforts to keep distance. You didn't need much longer though. The ocean water was quickly approaching along with your target.
There was a collection of jagged and sharp rocks right above the waters surface. They'd work perfectly in taking care of your problem. You'd just have to keep on this course until the last second so the wyvern wouldn't catch on.
Your leg throbbed and was probably bleeding. The wind swept past your head, teasing any loose feathers and whipping your hair around. Despite it being a life or death flight, your adrenaline was pumping and you were excited for the final moment.
When you heard the jolting shouts of the crew from the ship and the rocks were close enough to make out their fine details, you snapped your wings back open and twisted to the side, skimming over the water's surface. Suddenly slowing down and catching air so quickly hurt your wings but they weren't damaged. What hurt more was when you landed on the ship and tumbled across the deck, a few needles breaking and pushing further into your leg.
But the pain was worth it. There was a crash as the creature hit the ocean followed by a harsh wail as it impaled itself on the rocks. The ship errupted into cheers at the scene while you fell into a fit of pained giggles. You'd won that fight.
"Oi! Let's get this ship moving!" Kid roared. "Let's not stick around to see if that lizard gets up."
You were staring up at the sky, in a little bit of a daze now that it was done.
"Good flight feathers." Kid kicked your hurt leg and you jerked it back, hissing slightly.
"Thanks." You winced as you got to your feet, favoring your wounded side.
"Go to the medical bay, those look nasty." He snickered as he walked away, Killer quickly taking his place.
"Let me help." He wrapped an arm around your waist, letting you get a hold around his shoulders before walking you to see the doctor.
"I didn't kill it did I?" You peeked over his shoulder but saw no signs of the wyvern.
"No, but you gave it hell. It limped off back inland, it's safe to say it won't bother us anymore."
"Perfect." You let out a sigh of relief. "That was kinda scary."
"And yet you still took it down." He shook his head and kicked open the medical bay door, spooking the doctor inside.
"(Y/n) girl that's some wound you got there." The man chuckled, already over his initial scare. He was a hefty looking guy, a bit overweight with a large frame, but he was a bit of a softie too.
"Yeah, I think it looks worse than it is though."
Killer sat you down on the edge of a cot and pulled up a chair for you to prop your leg up on. "We'll have to see about that."
----
The doctor had Killer help pull out the spines and it hurt like hell, but by the time they were done and the wounded area was patched up, it felt much better. Still sore and throbbing, but without the piercing pain to accompany it. You limped when you walked but at least you weren't stuck in bed.
"Want to check out the haul? We got quite a bit of gold." Killer asked. "I think Kid is going to be willing to part with a portion of it if you want some, especially after what you did, it impressed him."
"I'm curious what all we got, but I don't think I want any of it. There's nothing I need." You followed Killer out the door after giving the doctor a quick thanks.
"Nothing? What about clothes or makeup or something like that?"
"Really Killer? Do I really look like the kind of girl that cares about stuff like that?"
"Most women do."
"Most women don't become pirates or outfly wyverns." You laughed, eyes landing on the crowd of men surrounding Kid and his haul.
"No (Y/n), no they don't."
