Feathers' Best Friend
You stretched your wings out, closed your eyes and smiled. It felt good to be able to bathe them in the sunlight again without someone losing their shit. Flying was still touchy. Someone was always keeping an eye on you when you took to the skies and you liked testing how far you could get from the ship before someone would call you back. It wasn't all that far.
No matter how often Kid told them to let you go do your thing, the rest of the crew refused to let you. It aggravated the captain to no end but it was the one time the majority won out. It didn't bother you too much though. You'd float around the ship, circling it lazily until someone called you down to do chores or just to chat.
You opened your eyes slowly and gave your wings a couple testing flaps before jumping off the side of the ship and letting the ocean breeze carry you up. Breaking a wing was a good way to remind you how much you took flying for granted but you wouldn't do the same again. Now, and like all the times you'd flown since your wing healed completely, you took the time to enjoy every second in the air.
Nothing beat the feeling of the wind tousling your hair and sending loose feathers into the water below. The weather was warm and humid but feeling the occasional droplets of water spring up from the water below and hit your skin sent shivers up your spine. It was a delightful contrast.
You spun, dipped, and dived around. Your wings were able to stretch and move perfectly and complete every action with the littlest of effort. It was amazing something could be so powerful and delicate at the same time but that's exactly what they were.
Killer came up from below deck and looked around until his gaze reached you. Even through the mask you could feel his eyes on you. He took his time reaching the ship's main mast and lean against it, watching you do your thing in the air. You let out a giggle as you played around in the air, occasionally swooping down close enough to scatter some of the other men and reach out to touch your lover as you'd pass by. He'd hold out a hand each time to meet you halfway and drag his fingers over whatever part of you he could touch.
You didn't play the game for long. Eventually you came down and stood in front of him, rocking back and forth on the balls of your feet as you waited for him to say something. He may have had his face hidden but you could feel his want to talk about something radiating off of him.
"We've got a couple stops coming up." He began.
"Where at?" You chirped like the bird you were, turning around and backing up into him so you could lean into his warmth.
His arms wrapped around your waist and he rested his chin on your head before speaking again.
"Our base island first. I've contacted a couple other captains that are interested in forging an alliance with us."
"Sounds interesting. Which captains?"
"Scratchmen Apoo and Basil Hawkins."
"Interesting choices." You grimaced.
You'd seen pictures of the men and heard about them, along with others from the worst generation of course. Those two in particular didn't strike you as the kind of people Kid would work with but you weren't the captain of the ship. He could make his own choices.
"They'll be helpful in our future plans." He pat your shoulder reassuringly before returning his hand to rest on your hip. His thumb slipped up under your tank top and rubbed circles on your skin.
"So where else are we going?"
"An island called Falsea. It was one of the ones mentioned in that book of yours. It's supposedly relatively close by to our base and Kid thinks it may hold something of interest."
"Something interesting as in....?"
"Either to kill or plunder."
"Makes sense."
You let out a content hum as he ran his hands along your sides. He couldn't kiss you with the mask on so he liked to feather you in light touches. Kiss you with his fingertips and then whispering promises of ravishing your lips with his own in the privacy of your shared room.
"(Y/n)?" The way he said your name had your heart fluttering.
"Yeah?"
"You look good when you fly."
Killer always watched you whenever he had the chance. He was your number one fan.
You giggled and craned your head back to look at his mask. "You think?"
----
Most of the time, you were a pretty heavy sleeper. Now that could've been because Killer wore you out with sex pretty often but that was beside the point. It was odd for you to suddenly wake up and not feel a hint of lingering drowsiness.
Your lover was sound asleep beside you, laying on his belly with his face buried in the pillows. It was like he tried to hide his face even in his sleep. As you watched his body rise and fall in sync with his breathing, you realized you weren't going to get back to sleep for a while. With a light sigh, you got up and searched in the dark for your clothes.
When you found your tank top and shorts, you quietly got dressed so as not to wake Killer up and crept out of the room. Some fresh air may help you feel a little tired again but if not, you could always just enjoy the sea breeze anyway.
It was cool out on deck, there was almost a slight chill to the air even. Somehow you could hear heavy snores coming from up in the crows nest. You'd probably wake up whoever was on watch before heading back to bed. It'd be a pain to watch them get chewed out tomorrow for falling asleep on the job.
For now though, you'd enjoy the quiet of the night. You hopped onto the side railing and walked along it, listening to the dark waters below slap against the ship. Besides that and the occasion groan of the woodwork, it was calm. You thought you could've woken up because something was going on but that wasn't the case as far as you could tell. There was nothing you could see on the horizon. No ships or seakings to be seen in the moonlight.
You scanned the skies. A couple lonesome clouds floated on by and stars peeked out from behind them. As you continued to walk along the railing, you started trying to find the different constellations. There weren't a lot you knew by heart but you made your fun finding the ones you did and then trying to find different shapes and creatures in the stars.
Then, you stopped and frowned. A group of stars seemed to disappear and then reappear just as fast. Like something had blocked them from view for a split second. You stopped walking and watched the group of stars intently. It didn't happen there again, but you saw it happen out of the corner of your eye. And then again in another direction. Something was flying nearby.
It was too dark to make out details at first, but as it continued to swoop around and come closer you were able to start getting an idea of what it was. It had to be large, the wings seemed leathery, and there was the occasional oddly shaped dark protrusion coming off of it. Spines. Oh shit.
It never crossed your mind that the creature might leave it's island. Now it must have locked on to the ship and was approaching at a terrifying speed.
You jumped down from the railing and stumbled a bit from the shock of what was about to hit the ship. You got about halfway across the deck, ready to start raising the alarm when it landed, sending the ship rocking back and forth roughly.
It skidded to a halt right behind you and let out something that was a mix between a coo and a growl. You slowly turned to face it and were met with a thick pinkish purple, scaled chest. Your eyes traveled up until you saw its glowing cyan throat, its cocked head, and then it's piercing pink reptilian gaze.
It let out another sound, similar to the first one but a little lower before it came closer and you fell on your backside. It settled above you, huge talons clicking against the wood by your head. But it didn't do anything much to your confusion. The same noise continually spilled from it's throat as it tilted it's head from one side to the other and looked at you from one eye at a time. It's muzzle was getting in the way of seeing you.
"What the fuck was that?" Kid snarled as he stomped out of his room, only to stop and take in the sight.
You chanced a look behind you to see Killer crouched over and slowly coming closer so he could get to you. There was a growing number of other crew members gathering behind them, woken up from the vigorous rocking of the ship earlier.
"He's back." You said as you returned your focus to the wyvern.
Something told you it was a he. And that something also said he wasn't trying to be threatening for some reason.
"Hold on Killer." You held up a hand to stop him and the wyvern dipped it's head lower, close enough that you could count the scales around it's eyes. "I don't think he's dangerous."
"(Y/n) that thing tried to kill you." He replied, much closer than before.
Close enough that the creature over you didn't like it. You felt it's body rumble as a warning growl worked out its mouth and it's lips curled up slightly to show rows of petite, sharp teeth.
"Give me a second Killer, I think I've got this." You really wanted him to scoot back so you could figure out how to handle this. "Give it some space."
The wyvern immediately calmed down, losing the attitude as soon as your partner backed off. He trusted you knew what you were doing.
You licked your lips and gave out a small whistle, getting the creatures attention again. It made it's noise in response and nudged you with it's nose. Despite the scales, it felt smooth. Taking this as a sign it wasn't going to snap you in half, you got out from under it and worked yourself up to your feet. It watched carefully, but let you up without any fuss.
The crew behind you watched with bated breath as you reached forward and laid a hand on it's cheek, right were a small group of spikes poked out. It let out a full on coo and rubbed into your hand. You chuckled, breaking into a smile.
"I think it decided I was worth making friends with."
You were no wyvern expert, but you guessed since you were able to outfly him, he decided you were more use to him as a friend than food. You glanced up at the top of it's head, looking for the wounds it had gotten from your fight with it. Sure enough, there was a scar there and the spines that had broken had grown back with slightly brighter colors. It was definitely the same creature.
No longer worried about him hurting you, you tugged his head down by the spikes on his cheeks and he obliged. You were manhandling a freaking wyvern. Now you giggled, and ran a hand under it's eye and then down to the cyan patch on it's throat. It was slightly warmer than the rest of it's body, radiating a comforting heat that seeped out from the slits along the sides of it's muzzle.
"So not only can you outfly a wyvern, you can tame one too." Killer said from right behind you. You didn't hear him approach but you looked back and smiled at him.
"Pretty cool, right? Gimme your hand." You took his much larger hand in yours and led it to your new friends neck until it touched.
The wyvern twitched slightly but let it happen when it noticed you were comfortable with Killer.
"He'd be handy to keep around." Killer said as he let his hand wander along the scales without your help.
"As long as it can feed itself." Kid grumbled. "And don't let it eat any of the men. I'm not losing a crew for the lizard."
"I don't think he'll have a problem with that, huh big guy?"
He shook his head, like a dog shaking off water and let out something like a purr, though it sounded more like an engine revving. He liked it when you talked to him apparently.
"What're you going to call him." Killer asked as he wrapped an arm around your waist.
You welcomed the touch and leaned into him. "I'm thinking.....Cypher? Yeah. That fits."
"Well Cypher, looks like your going to be the first ever pirate wyvern." His shoulders jumped up and down as he chuckled quietly at the absurdity of the statement.
Things were going to be a lot more interesting now that you had a large, scaley friend to work with.
