Wayne woke up, and stretched. These beds were super uncomfortable. He had even considered sleeping on the floor. Now, he was beginning to think that the floor might be softer. Last night, he hadn't really gotten too much done. He had climbed up the ladder, dumped his stuff on the floor, and flopped onto the bed. Only now did he get a chance to really look at the room.
It was circular, and it had windows all around it. The ocean looked empty, except for the small schools of fish, and plants. The floor was carpeted. The ceiling was slightly domed, and it was blue steel. The whole place was cool, but kind of empty.
Wayne got dressed, and sat back down on the bed. His pocket knife fell out of his pocket, and under the bed. He sighed.
Getting down on his knees, he reached under the bed, and his hand closed on something large and flat. Puzzled, he pulled it out. The object turned out to be a sort of tablet, with an electronic pen attached. Wayne blew the dust off of it, and turned it over. An old sticker was glued to the back. It was barely legible, but it appeared to say "Property of Phil Coisson." Whoever this Phil Coisson was, maybe he had some answers.
Wayne pressed the power button, but nothing happened. He opened the battery compartment, and it was empty. He took a small pouch from his belt, and shook two AA batteries into his hand. He slid them into the device, and tried the button again. This time, the screen lit up, and Wayne could see that this was essentially an electronic diary. He scrolled to the start, and began reading.
March 17:
Hello. I am Doctor Phil Coisson. If you're reading this, you're either someone who came here on another mission, or me checking for spelling mistakes. But, either way, this is a log of our expedition to Trivia, the newly-discovered moon of Mars. I will try to write as often as possible, but I'm not sure how often that will be.
March 19:
We landed on Trivia today. True to the satellite pictures, there's nothing but water for miles. We're going to try and gather some resources for building a base. Penny got a bit space-sick when we were entering the atmosphere, but she's better now.
March 20:
I found a new creature today! I named it a Coisson, after its discoverer (me). It seemed aggressive at first, but it was only hungry. It took a bite out of the plant I was holding, and it seemed like it wanted me to follow it. I'll add a sketch of it here.
Under the March 20th entry, there was a picture of an odd creature. Its front half looked like a dog, a Doberman, with webbed paws, but the back end looked like a fish tail. Phil Coisson was a really good artist. It was plain what everything was, and he had even written a name beside it: Marty.
March 23:
Jeff discovered a new type of fish. Good thing, too. We were going to start running out of food any day now. He insisted on calling them after himself, but we said it would sound stupid calling them "Jeffs." So instead, he used his last name, which wasn't much better. Oh, well. Peppo it is.
March 26:
Marty the Coisson showed up again. He kept trying to get me to follow him, but I needed to stay close to the base until we had set up a beacon. I couldn't risk getting lost. Maybe next time.
March 28:
Penny found a new kind of fish. She named them Greyfish, after her boyfriend, Andy Grey. She keeps saying that they're cute, but all I see is pure derp. She kept one in her aquarium, and it keeps bonking its head into the side of the tank.
March 30:
Marty came back. I felt guilty leaving him, but the beacon's almost done. I can find my way back after it's finished.
April 2:
The beacon's done. Marty hasn't shown up yet. Maybe the beacon scared him off.
April 3:
Marty still hasn't shown his face again. Once Penny and Larry have gotten back from their scouting trip, I'll disable the beacon. We'll see if Marty comes then.
April 10:
This is Jeff Peppo. Dr. Phil Coisson hasn't been seen for seven days. We assumed he'd been eaten by that thing he was always hanging around, his Coisson. But now, after reading this, I believe Dr. Coisson went with the beast. He always seemed a bit mental, going on about how he felt he could understand this beast, how it was important. It seemed little more than an ugly brute to me. We have no way of tracking the doctor, so I guess we'll tell HQ that a creature got him.
Wayne sat back, having reached the end of the journal. So there had been people there before them. This was an important discovery. He left to tell the rest of the team.
